The Third #1

January 30, 2005 | Music
The Virgin website already shows the official UK Top 40 chart and Elvis did it again. A new entry, straight at #1 for the third time in four weeks. Ciara’ s single “Goodies”, which kept Elvis from #1 last week, drops to #3.

Meanwhile Elvis is also listed #20 with “A Fool Such I” and #40 with “One Night”.

In the UK Top 75 singles chart, "Jailhouse Rock" dropped seven places to #57 from last week's #50.

On the UK Music DVD chart The "Comeback" is steady at #4 while "Aloha" remains steady at #9.

From Music Week:

Singles sales improved for the third week in a row, climbing by 11.3% week-on-week to 333,887, their highest level for five weeks, though 31.5% less than in the same week last year.

Ciara's interruption last week stopped Elvis Presley from completing a unique hat trick of number ones with different singles on consecutive weeks but he's back on top again this week, this time with It's Now Or Never, originally a number one hit for him in 1960, when Aaron Schroeder and Wally Gold set new lyrics to the 1901 Italian composition O Sole Mio.

It's Now Or Never also turns in the highest first week sales in the current phase of re-release, selling 21,887 copies last week to beat the previous best of 21,262 set by Jailhouse Rock four weeks ago. It's Now Or Never is the fifth number one in a row for BMG, thanks to Steve Brookstein, Ciara and Presley. Impressive, but EMI had seven in a row in 1963, in a run ended by - who else? - Elvis Presley with (You're The) Devil In Disguise. [...]

The sales this week:
Elvis 21,887 copies
Ashanti 20,324 copies
One World 16,354 copies

Wow, hearing "Its Now or Never" blast out of radio one as this weeks number one is going to be something. I'm not going to count them chickens until i hear it on the radio though.
cockney_bill wrote on January 30, 2005
I don't know why everyone was worried about this charity single beating Elvis to the top. Cliff Richards face was on the front of the single. People probably thought it was a cliff single and steered well clear. Probably thought he was singing a version of Hail Mary or something! Cliff beat Elvis to the top of the charts? You'd have thought with a huge charity campaign behind him it would be 'now or never' for him to do so!!

Rob, To try and calm you a little - so far the 'official' Radio 1 charts from 40 to 22 have all been EXACTLY the same as the Virgin charts 40 to 22
RobIreland wrote on January 30, 2005
Always calm Cockney, Jailhouse Rock made it to number 6 in the best UK single, Queen getting number 1 again,

Well we've done it again! He's Number One for the third time this year, and it's still only January! This is the second time that "It's Now or Never" has gone straight to Number One and to have three records in the Top 40 is absolutely GREAT! I suppose next week we will be struggling to find copies of "Are You Lonesome Tonight". I wish "Do The Clam" was coming out. Ha! Ha! Ha!

Fantastic! My all time favourite Elvis song at #1 again! Just thought I'd mention that Elvis had a further 4 #1 hits in the U.K: 'Stuck On You/Fame And Fortune' was #1 in 1960 according to 'Disc' magazine. 'Wild In The Country' was #1 in 1961 according to 'New Musical Express' magazine. 'In The Ghetto' was #1 in 1969 according to 'New Musical Express' magazine. 'Suspicious Minds' was #1 in 1969 according to 'Disc' magazine.

Well done everyone out there & Evis of course! Great news!! Talking on number ones not allocated to him, didn't "One Broken Heart For Sale" made Number one in the 'Disc' or 'Melody Maker' charts too!? Maybe Elfan could check that out! Now, there are still stock problems regarding buying "Wooden Heart" tomorrow. Down here in the West Country there will still only be a few in each shop (ie only 6 copies in each Woolies) which is far too few, & this needs to be urgently addressed by RCA/BMG etc. No stock means no buyers & no buyers hardly helps Elvis to get another number one. The shops still say (as of yesterday) that no-one has told them they can order more stocks, so what is going on? This must be sorted out.

I'm 32 so not ancient, but I listened to the chart countdown tonight, and although im biased, Its Now or Never was the best song on there by an absolute million miles. Aside from that, Ive never heard so much rubbish in my entire life. Keep the good work. If any Elvis classic deserves Number 1, then its Are You Lonesome Tonight.

ElFan, I reckon BMG should have included the NME No1's too in their box. It's a shame that In The Ghetto & Susp Minds were prevented from getting to No1 in the RM/BBC charts by 2 one -hit wonders. Unfortunately, Devil In Desguise didn't make number 1 in NME. With BMG anouncing an international roll-out, maybe they will release a box for worldwide number 1's. Happy hunting/collecting.

Grrrreat news !! Before ALLC, or lets say 5 tears ago even, who would have thought that Elvis would be raking up the # 1's ? funny Westlife were looking to beat Elvis and The Beatles with the most # 1's just a few years ago. No chance of them catching Elvis now. Funny if they caught The Beatles though.
Viva wrote on January 30, 2005
It's funny, with all the stress that has come with these singles, and all the "I've had enough" syndrome kicking in, I still jumped for joy to hear the man going to number one again. Absolutley fantastic, can't wait to read the next edition of the Guinness book of British hit singles! But alas, as with all things Elvis, there is a down side - What on earth are we going to have to suffer on Friday's "Top Of The Pops"? I reckon they'll show the Cornetto advert from the Seventies.
get real wrote on January 30, 2005
The Beatles will surly release all their # 1's now that Elvis has had such great success with this. Just a matter of time i'm guessing. So lets keep getting Elvis to # 1, so that they cant catch him when it does happen.
RobIreland wrote on January 30, 2005
yes Viva with all the hassel and frustration of trying to find the singles and dissapointment of not seeing them displayed in the stores or hearing them on the radio or seeing the footage on the chart shows still, BMG must have known what they wer doing. They got EL" back to the top and really trying to get these singles has an element of adventure to it, im just going to enjoy it all from here on in... ( as long as theres no more imposters on top of the flops ).

I was in Woolworths tonight at 4pm,just as it was closing. I said to the girl behind the counter-I know it's a silly question, but have you got any of the Elvis singles? To my amazement she went in the drawer and brought out Are you lonesome tonight? She handed it to me and went to get the sleeve. However it wasn't on the shelf. She asked an assistant to locate it for me,only to be told it couldn't be sold until tomorrow. They were not allowed to reserve it for me either. It was the only copy that they had been sent! She told me I would have to join the cue at 8.45 in the morning. I'll be there. I actually had it in my hand!

It's also great to see the Aloha & '68 dvd's holding their own for so long, when you look at the last 3 years as a whole, it really says a lot about his talent that Elvis commands such success so long after he left us. See, we have been right all along!

I am over the moon that Elvis made number one again tonight, (my 8 year old son was jumping for joy too after becoming addicted to the mans magic) but I am still concerned about the availability of these singles and why it is so poor. I am sorry to worry anyone who pre ordered their collection from Amazon and waited to have to have the whole set delivered in one go, but I have just received an e mail from them saying they are having problems with the distributors and, after enquiring about this weeks single, namely "It's now or never", they say they may have problems getting them themsleves to send to all those who pre ordered like myself (I ordered on the 10th Dec), and will be letting people down. I find this diabolical, I have been sitting back expecting my collection to arrive once it was complete, and hoped for it to become some kind of heirloom to hand down for generations to come, only to be told I could be missing some, and then finding it too late to fill the gaps, has anyone else, who are in the same situation as myself, received a similar e mail yet ?

I think it is absolutely amazing that he has another number one but I am very annoyed as I have only managed to get one single and that is ONE NIGHT! I don't live near a music shop and can only get to one on a saturday when they are all sold out. I have someone who can get there on a tuesday and they are all sold out by then a day later. I would have liked to add these singles to my collection and now I will be unable to. If there were more cds released then he may stay at number one for more than just one week I mean he has dropped to 20 already with A FOOL SUCH AS I. Come on BMG do something about it cos it sucks! And to all you reading this who have managed to get the releases well done you are part of making him number one yet again!!

Hi Guys and Gals, Just got back from HMV in Brighton and it seems SONY/BMG have done what they said. There was a queue of over 100 people and there were enough copies for everyone. Plus, I saw at least 50 copies of INON on the shelves.

GetReal - As I have mentioned elsewhere on this site, the Beatles singles are currently available on CD format and have been for years, although they might not be seperately. I think the vinyl singles are still on catalog in a similar box.
joemin wrote on January 31, 2005
Kateluoise, you should have no troubl;e getting the singles now. They appear to be plentiful, including the older ones. It is vital that with the flood of singles that everyone always buys the LATEST single. The fear is that the current release gets left behind while people are buying the newer singles. Sales this week should take a BIG jump. 21, 000 for last week is disappointing. It would be great if the sales go over 30,000 this week.

They haven't received any stock of ANY singles and have promised to send them as soon as they get them (don't hold your breath). Shame because i was really lookin forward to completing the set. Todd Slaughter has repeated that the singles are going to be available from the fan club shortly. my dog won't eat the cd box so now i'm using it as a vase and have a plant stuck in it.

Hi Bernard. 'One Broken Heart For Sale' peaked at #7 in the 'New Musical Express' chart. Another interesting snippet: 'Crying In The Chapel' reached #1 TWICE in the official U.K chart - it was ousted from the top spot for one week and regained the #1 position the following week. Does that count as two number ones? :-)

I am over the moon that Elvis has his third #1 but why are the sales this low if there was suppose to be 30,000 of them. I must be going in the wrong shops. I cant take any credit for Its Now or Never getting to number one because I could not find it anywhere.I have not bothered to go to any music shops today to see if i can get Are You Lonesome Tonight ? Theres not much point if you know you cant get it. I will wait until the 25th april because Sony/BMG said thats when there going to release more of these singles ! Yesterday I picked up A Fool Such As I in Bury St Edmunds and it was numbered

Just a thought: You know every so often here in the UK, they release the latest in the "Now that's what i call music" series, which is basically the biggest chart hits of the previous few months? Will the next in the series be sub-titled "Elvis Presley's greatest hits"! LOL Actually these albums sell by the bucketloads, so all these kids nowadays who wouldnt dream of buying an Elvis record are gonna end up with a damned lot of his songs on their next chart compilation CD. Might even reel some new fans in?

I'm surprised how low the sales were for Its Now or Never, it was a close run thing again. Sales should easily reach 30,000 + this week, which will guarantee Number 1 (and its one of the greatest records, if not the greatest, Elvis ever recorded - Are You Lonesome Tonight?''.

data wrote on January 31, 2005
Why call it the US N° 1 , there is no need for that , BMG could bring out all Elvis singles in the UK in the original US sleeve because let's be honest you do'nt buy these records because you do'nt have them in your collection but because you do'nt have them in the original sleeve as they came out in the US. So they could bring out everything up until 1960. Heartbreak hotel, Blue suede shoes, I want you i need you i love you, Don't be cruel, Hound dog, Love me tender, Love me, Too much, Teddy bear, Loving you, Don't, Wear my ring around your neck, Hard headed woman, A big hunk o' love, Stuck on you
data wrote on January 31, 2005
Afther this list and the 17 other singles can anyone still believe that Elvis only sold 50 million singles in the US. Because this list only are singles up until 1960. We also had christmas singles and SUN re releases in the 1950's.

volvo wrote on January 31, 2005
Joemin - it was his side-kick complaining about how boring the whole singles campaign is, he obviously didn't undrestand the concept behind it, and the usual shaky "Elvis" voice impressions and the "dying on the toilet" gags we've all heard before. I'm going to listen to a diferent radio station tomorrow - it's not that I don't have a sense of humour - I just don't think it's funny.
joemin wrote on January 31, 2005
Sounds like a jerk. maybe someone should pay him a vist. Let's get Are You Lonesome Tonight to #1 and bore him a bit more...
ranger wrote on February 01, 2005
volvo, Not finding jokes about cheeseburgers etc. etc. funny does not imply that you haven't a sense of humour, I can assure you. It's lazy and infinitely more 'predictable' than the current singles campaign (everyone predicted that AFSAI would reach No.1 didn't they?). The last laugh is on the guy himself; personally you couldn't pay me enough to go and work for Radio 1 in 2005. And now that the music documentaries are on Radio 2, and John Peel has died, what posssible reason could there be for anyone to ever listen to Radio 1 again (apart from at 6.45-6.50pm on Sundays until May!). Vote with your feet, ratings and market share really are the only things they understand.
John4126 wrote on February 01, 2005

Is Romford the only place where the shops arent stocking 'Are you lonesome tonight'? I got mine pre-ordered no problem, but there is absolutely none on the shelves in either HMV or Virgin, whilst there are plenty of stocks of M+M's current single. It would be hard enough beating this single anyway to the top, but I still have my suspicions that all copies arent reaching the shopfloor for whatever reason?
