Extra Singles

January 11, 2005 | Music
There will be extra support for the upcoming singles. It has been agreed today that more singles will be produced (due to purchases by eBayers). Some won't be numbered, but these un-numbered editions will probably be collector's items too.

This is great news. Will there be enough? What is needed is about 10,000 extra, maybe even 15,000. The demand is incredible. I hope they are planning to do a few extra boxes also.

How will this work. Call me greedy, but I have a 'numbered' CD + Vinyl box, and numbered vinyls and singles. All other future releases are on order with my local HMV. I don't want to find that any of my future purchases AREN'T numbered, and less of a collectors item? Whilst I have EVERY sympathy for those who cant purchase copies, surely the 'limited edition' is what is making this thing such a huge success, meaning everyone is racing to get a copy rather than leave it a few weeks when its dropped out of the charts and can be picked up for 60p. Could the answer not have been to limit the amount that people are allowed to buy? Could not hmv on line, amazon etc and the high street stores refused to sell say more than a couple of copies per person? Oh well....Number 1 this week is what REALLY matters I suppose, everything after will just be more icing on the cake
Mal wrote on January 11, 2005
I agree with cockney_bill as i have also ordered them and don't want unnumbered ones. as only one per purchase both virgin and hmv's in Peterborough was only letting one per person

I have been unable to buy the second single. HMV and Virgin have told me I can't pre-order any of the singles. Has anyone else had this problem. Can anyone recomend how I can ensure that I get all the singles in the collection (vinyl and CD)?
cockney_bill wrote on January 11, 2005
As far as I can tell you can still buy all the cd's on amazon. As for the vinyl, perhaps you could have a word with the manager at HMV and ask if they can review their policy? Sorry. I wish I could help. If people start collecting, then find they cant add to the collection then they will give up and all future releases will sell less numbers.

I heard that Elvis Presley Records by Mail are taking orders and selling the sets as complete. I hope this helps peter.

Hi all, i work for HMV and as far as i know you can still order copies of the upcoming releases although this may vary as each store gets its own allocation to sell. tbh i think it is fair you can only get one copy per person to stop people buying tones to simply sell on ebay. I for instance saw mondays release (10th jan - one night) go for £96 for the 10" single, MADNESS! Although were not putting limitations on peoples purchases in our store yet!. If they do go ahead with the non-ltd numbered singles they should at least release some as numbered ltd editions for those collecting ie for their box set, but sell the non numbered ones to boost sales and so everyone has a chance to own them. I run the singles department in my store and each release is deleted as soon as it goes on sale which means weve none to put on the shelves and cant order any more. I think youll find its the same everywhere

Good to hear the excellent news from Todd that RCA may press more of the "Upcoming" singles. They really also need to press some more of the current three, especially the vinyl versions, particularly Jailhouse Rock, which is harder to find on vinyl than the box! So many people are having trouble getting these & genuine fans are unable to even start their collection of these great singles. Meanwhile, if you can find it, please BUY ONE NIGHT!!

The extra copies are being made available NOW by SONG-BMG in an attempt to put a dent into this hype on eBay. We know that quite a lot of High Street record store managers have "sweetheart" deals with dealers who buy stocks of limited edition releases (not just Elvis) to sell on the auction sites before they ever get onto the shop shelves. The manager gets a "bung" the dealer buys 20 or even 50 copies at full retail, then off loads via the internet. It's life I'm afraid, but this is not exclusive to eBayers. I hear that a few Elvis fan clubs in the UK have been doing the same, but I can assure you that this is NOT the policy of the official Elvis Presley Fan Club. The important thing is to keep buying the singles. There is a swap site operating, and we will (in the future) make an attempt to fill the gaps in members' collections through the fan club. You can be assured that this problem is NOT due to BMG, or this Fan Club, and is down to the greed of High Street Store Managers, Dealers, and sadly some fans. At this point whining about whether the discs are numbered or not, isn't helping solve the shortfall, or addressing the problem. The most important thing to to get product out there to help fans, thwart the greed, and keep Elvis on top! Todd Slaughter

Thank you SONG-BMG. My faith in the record industry has been partly restored, although I'm not sure how long it will last! This whole campaign shouldn't be about completists having numbered copies of Jailhouse Rock; instead it should focus on promoting Elvis and rock 'n' roll to a new audience without the dubious practice of remixing his records. I don't care if my copy of A Fool Such As I is numbered or not. I just don't want to have to visit every record store within a ten mile radius of Walthamstow to get hold of a copy.

Ranger. Virgin in Romford shopping precinct have a brilliant Elvis display as you walk in the door, with the CD's and Vinyl on display. When I went in there Monday to pick up my copies a young woman in front of me was ordering future releases...so if all else fails jump in your car and get yourself down to the capital city of East London ex pats!!!
RobIreland wrote on January 12, 2005
I find Virgin Stores is the best for supplies of the singles. I even picked up the Jailhouse Rock vinyl only on Monday there. That was Virgin in Belfast.
Neckywoudje wrote on January 12, 2005
Here in Dordrecht (Holland) the singles were sold out within' a couple of hours, so till now I wasn't able to get them. I ordered them from the online shops, but the had to order them from BMG! So I still have nothing...so please make some more! Don't bother about a number, the more the better!
pacer1965 wrote on January 12, 2005
Well said Neckywoudje the more of these singles the better. I am not bothered if they are numbered or not i would love to see the king get the 1000 number one in the uk. Thats all that matters to me.

Todd, you obviously log in here, so I thought I would just say thanks for everything you are doing. Now a suggestion. We will loose the #1 slot for the month of February. If we are going to loose it anyway, why not ask BMG to increase Its Now Or Never to a 4 week realease, increase it to 1 millkion copies if neccessary, and give all proceeds to sunami/Red Cross. Elvis would have approved. Continue the weekly releases afterwrads, exch of the the others comming out 3 weeks later than origonally scheduled. Just a suggestion.

Come on British Fans. I know you are having horrible weather and it's not easy to go out. But PLEASE do your best to buy every single and keep Elvis at #1. There is one record that is still held by The Beatles and that's for the most consecutive No.1's (11 in all!) so let's try to break this record. This is the time, perhaps the only time, to do it. I wish I could help but living in Malta is very hard to get the singles. This is such an exciting time for us all, reminiscent of the 50's and 60's when Elvis was always tops. Heck, he still is. Let's keep it this way.
joemin wrote on January 12, 2005
Westlife also have 11 consecutive #1's. That would be very difficult to achieve, but there are several other records that could be broken: Most #1's in a year (currently Elvis has 4 from 61 and 4 from 62, westlife 4 from 99). First artist to replace himself at #1 twice. Most top 10 hits in a year. Think he already has that from 1977. Most records to make #1 in first week. Westlife hold that I think at about 11 or 12. Not sure how many Elvis has so far. Most #1's in the new millenium. Most hits in the new millenium. Most in top 10 hits (will pass out Cliff Richard in feb) Any more??

When do you think these new copies will be available to buy? the man in my local shop said that he wouldn't be able to get hold of any, so I will have to buy it online from Amzon or HMV (currently listing it as unavailable)
ranger wrote on January 12, 2005
I know I might be alone in this, but is there any chance that the first single will be re-pressed (un-numbered) without the box. This would have two advantages; 1) 10,000 copies would gain a chart entry for All Shook Up, and 2) I wouldn't have to shell out a fiver for an empty box! Thanks for the Romford tip, Cockney Bill, I'll keep it in mind for next Monday.
SendToTodd wrote on January 12, 2005
I am trying to give you the news as it breaks, and please believe me if I had in-store dates for the re-pressings, I would let you know. There are over 4,000 stores that retail recorded music in the UK, so it follows that I cant tell you that copies will be on the shelves of HMV Watford at 10.20am on Wednesday. Part of collecting special and limited editions is the fun in tracking them down, and this bitterness fuelled in part by greed is spoiling the plot. That said we truly want to help, and at the same time celebrate this wonderful success for Elvis and his fans. I and SONY-BMG have done everything to address the shortfall problem, and in future months members of our club should have the opportunity to fill the missing title gaps. Also BMG will have a swap facility on their 18 UK 1s web site shortly, so get out there and don't take "no" for an answer. But please - don't ring me at this time because I'm cracking-up - 400 phone calls today! And don't take it too seriously. This is a fun purchase for less than the price of a packet of cigarettes, and it's putting Elvis right at the top yet again. Have faith, you will get a complete set in the end, but you have to work at it. Todd Slaughter.

Just want to say that in Feburary 7th which is Wooden Heart release date , U2 are releasing thier single then too. Dosent matter if you hate or love Wooden Heart lets buy like we've never bought before. I love the music of U2 but for Wooden Heart to beat the best group in the world to number one would be something else. I bet U2 will be buying the Elvis singles, so should you too ! ( lol sorry )

Todd thankyou for bringing a little bit of sanity back here, people are going a wee bit nuts about all this. Ofcourse in the end we will all get full boxs'. Todd seeing your name just brought back my memories of going into Easons book shop every month looking for "Elvis Monthly". Sometimes it was there in large numbers sometimes it was all sold out, a bit like these singles actually. By the way i have filled my need for "Elvis Monthly" with "Elvis the man and his music" a fantastic quarterly mag.
stu wrote on January 12, 2005
Its good to get some facts from Todd regarding the availibility of the singles however, I have just been on e-bay and someone is selling "A Fool Such As I". This person is obviously in possession of the single as it states the collector number etc... Just how did they get the single when its not even released yet?
cockney_bill wrote on January 12, 2005
Actually there are quite a few 'A fool such as I' on ebay, both cd and vinyl and all quoting the limited edition number. If you're reading this Todd is there anything you can do? Its amazing that us fans have to hunt around whilst some people have what appears to be illegal advance copies

Joemin, I like your idea of a charity single, but how about something more appropriate. If I Can Dream c/w You'll Never Walk Alone would make a great combination and so much more heartfelt than some other charity efforts. And just imagine what could be achived with the right promotion - could there be a better video?? Todd - do you know if BMG has considered anything along these lines?

Ally, can you tell me how to find Elvis Presley Records By Mail? I've tried Google but can't find a mail order for the 18 No.1's Thanks!
Mal wrote on January 13, 2005
Hi LuckyJackson i don't know if they have a website but i think found an e-mail address for the on google elvis by mail at tiscali dot co dot uk (no spaces in address) hope this helps.

Stocks of "A Fool Such As I" are already at the shops, but they are NOT allowed to be put on sale until the release date. Bent retail managers however are selling under-the-counter to their eBay mates already. It's not fair, and this Elvis release programme has highlighted the problem. I have to say I don't think at this time the charity single is "do-able" because the flow is locked into BMG's system. Also they have to get EPE approval to involve Elvis' name for such a project and I guess they are all chasing their tails in Memphis, and looking over their backs to see who has a knife ready. Have a good day. Todd Slaughter

Lucky, you can phone Elvis Records by Mail on 01603488744. I hope you live up to your name.
Mal wrote on January 13, 2005
Surerly it does'nt take much for Bmg/Sony to check where some of these sellers got there copies, as looking on ebay i saw one seller with 25 copies of fool such as I and listed what edition number they are. All Bmg/Sony have do is check what store got them numbers, and refuse them any more copies of future releases.
LuckyJackson wrote on January 14, 2005
Thanks to you both ,Ally and Mal! Will give both a try! and yeah, hope I really am 'lucky'!
