Something For Everybody (FTD 2CD)

April 15, 2006 | Music
FTD’s last outing in the original album art series is this classic from the early sixties.

Design

As all previous releases in this series it is well designed and taken care of. A nice booklet with pictures, info and memorabilia, original labels on the CDs, in other words: perfect!

Content

If there is one title of an Elvis album that covers the content… it is this one. It really is something for everybody: beautiful ballads like “There’s Always Me”, swinging up tempo songs like “Put the Blame On Me” and bluesy tracks like the haunting “Give Me The Right”. Add to this the hitsingle that probably had the best double A-side “His Latest Flame”/ “Little Sister” and you have a winner. Well, you had a winner in the extended release of a couple of years ago on the main label.

For this FTD outing – a collector’s item – it seems a bit different. Even most of the outtakes were available before (not counting the bootlegs) and somehow that spoils the fun a bit.

Nevertheless what remains is a very enjoyable collection, with Elvis in top voice and a well balanced song selection. Still we wonder how more often we are going to buy the same stuff over and over again. What is next? Orignal album art series on original format?

It looks like we are not the only ones with this feeling, since when “Today” and “Elvis Is Back” were released in this series, they got quite some votes for the FTD Top 20 in their first week, while both recent FTD releases didn’t get a single vote in their first week.

Conclusion

A nice collection, let’s hope it’s the final one of this session.

This is a real killer. If you liked Loving You and Elvis Is Back, then you will appreciate this one also. It looks great, it sounds fantastic (silky smooth and crystal clear), and the material is organized for maximum enjoyment. Five stars for this beauty.

I have to agree with the article. I am a huge Elvis fan, but the latest releases just don't do anything for me. I hear the argument about only a certain amount of material out there, but there seems to be little effort put into these latest releases. Instead of releasing Loving You a year after a previous new release, why not choose something else from the whole Elvis catalogue such as, Girls, Girls, Girls, Roustabout, Speedway or perhaps some of the 70's albums like Raised On Rock or Good Times.

One more time, thank you FTD for this beautiful release. Very good sound, design, and of course the content is so great. The musicians and Elvis's voice, it's a delight. Keep on Ernst...

I have never had the bootlegs, so I'm glad for this FTD CD. I suppose the box sets on which some of the outtakes were released, will be/are deleted by SonyBMG, so here we have them all together. Wonderful! Thank you, Ernst! Keep 'em coming!

I like this cd too. Elvis was in his best voice-shape. And I think we ought to be very thankfull that these cd's are coming. Am I annoying people 'cause I always end my reactions with a plead for the 71-recordings????? What's wrong with beautiful songs as: We can make the morning, Love me. love the life I lead, Early morning rain, I'm leaving etc. Waiting and hoping and hoping and waiting, waiting...

You are not annoying, Rob. Though "Love Me, Love the Life i Lead" isn't one of my favourites, I am hoping and waiting for alternate versions of "We Can Make the Morning" and others.

Great album!! but it's a pitty not to include takes 10 & 11 of "Little Sister". The linernotes "IN AND OUTTAKES" insists that mastertake is take 4. But I don't think so. Drums' Arrangement was changed from take10. I suppose take 12 (or later) is a true master.

If anybody hasn't noticed yet... The price in Amazon uk must be wrong because almost all the FTD releases are about at 16 pounds and this is only around 10. So if you are going to buy it, you'd better rush...

Amazon uk yes 'Something for Everybody is £9.99 bought mine for that price, I know it's a mistake and they will realise soon and put it back to £17.99 which is the price of other 7" format CD's. Get in quick it can't last

What a superb album! Brilliant and definately one of Elvis best since Elvis Is Back. The songs "I'm Coming Home" and "I Want Yoiu With Me" are vintage 50s rock n roll. wow!

What can I say about this great album ? We hear an Elvis in top form. The songs are chosen perfectly for Elvis voice, like the songs on the Elvis is back album. I think about it what has happened if Elvis wasn´t caught in this damn movie contract, what great albums he has been recorded !?! Ernst you know what to do in the future: Give us more of these fantastic releases ! From 10 points I want to give 20 but it isn´t possible.

"Something For Everybody" has always been a favourite album of mine. A true "Classic Album" release through FTD and it actually grows even greater. I've had only one run through due to late arrival of the CD. But, what can I say: It's such a wonderful listen. Comes close to Elvis Is Back imo. Great delivery Ernst!! Keep 'em coming!

got my copy from 'now dig this' and was well happy!-a classic album with lots of great studio outtakes.. the whole cd is excellant and has great liner notes in the sleeve, along with good photos of elvis and informative notes on the recording sessions; the negative aspect was the fact they could have and shoulf have included a-lot takes from the 1961 studio b sessions; i.e.kiss me quick, thats someone you never forget, forget me never, etc, etc, .all in all, a must have cd and i hope thet finaly release the 1966 'how great thou art sessions' on the same ftd lable? (god knows, the outtakes are available as they was released on bootleg cds a while back)..time will only tel;l wether or not they decide to release the complete gospel sessions offficialy??.

Well at least the tracklist beats the JOKE they pulled on us with the FTD LOVING YOU, when I got that one - I thought RCA was behind it all the way. A perfect chance to share with the fans ALTERNATES of Teddy Bear (Did anyone else miss it on theirs). I may seem a bit negative when it comes to the CD re-releases, but let's hope 'Loving You', was the last we'll see of FTD pulling an RCA on us. ELVIS IS BACK was a good release as well.
Gladyslove wrote on May 26, 2006
untamedhawk, there is not one outtake of Teddy bear available in the vaults of BMG as far as we now. This is the same with other great songs like Hound dog, Love me tender. Maybe they have these outtakes and Ernst will release them as " recently found outtakes " in 2007 it´s not the first time, believe me. This is a special year, or should be and I hope a new box set will be ours !

Great release. Great songs.

Something For Everybody was originally released in June 1961. Some of the singles were recorded AFTER its release, and were recorded along with songs that ended up on Pot Luck. I say Little Sister, His Latest Flame, (both recorded on June 25th) Good Luck Charm and Anything That's Part of You (both recorded on Oct 15th) would be more approriate on Pot Luck. But I am sure it is more of a programming issue than a historic one when FTD decides which "bonus songs" end up on what Classic album, as there would not be enough room on Pot Luck for 4 extra songs along with their outtakes!
