The Music Week commends on this week's UK singles chart:

The second week of combined physical/download sales throws up few surprises at the chart summit, with Elvis Presley’s penultimate reissue Way Down (RCA) taking a tentative hold at number one, interrupting Tony Christie & Peter Kay’s five-week spell at the top - although recent sales patterns suggest (Is This The Way To) Amarillo could return to number one by the weekend due to Elvis sales dipping towards the week’s end.

A raft of guitar bands look likely to invade the Top 40 this weekend, with new entries from Hard-Fi (Atlantic), Caesars (Virgin), Editors (Kitchenware), The Cribs (Wichita) and The Rakes (Moshi Moshi) all performing well at retail, according to early reports.

Nine Inch Nails’ The Hand That Feeds (Island) has got off to an impressive start, and will be competing for a top three position, giving the band a career-best chart placing in the process. BodyRockers’ I Like The Way (Mercury) also looks likely to enter within the Top 10.

This looks good. I'm really hopeful. You can download WD from msn(hope i'm allowed say that) for only 69p. Maybe if we all download one at the weekend that will eliminate the dip in sales at that time.

The guitar sound on the alt Way Down is very different from the original, Marc Bolan, wizard, and other influences? Not sure which is my favourite version as they are quite different through this guitar work. Interesting!

M.S.N does not count towards the charts. Do not download from there. And do not do multiple downloads as they obviously don't count either.

What`s going on? I`ve downloaded from HMV,well actually i`m not very technical so someone did it for me and i`m listening to it now! (it has the correct cover and everything) Why is it not listed above? Have we really Downloaded zilch? Come on guys we may have a chance-Download! TCB

Hey guess what? I downloaded this too from It*nes last night and that has not registered either. Is something fishy going on here? Still it makes life a bit more exciting eh!

Funny, that. I downloaded WD from the virgin site, yes the single - not an album track. What the hell is going on? Hopefully this will sort itself out: there is a really great chance that WD could do the business! Also, why are the sales for the CD so low? Time to rally the troops and get this damn fine record back on top of the charts. Bully your friends into downloading it. Get your granny a copy to play on her lap top. She hasn't got one? Buy her one then you tight git. Please, I would love to see this top the charts and give a proverbial kick in the Queenie Wahini's to the critics and all those in the industry who have tried so hard to prevent these releases from getting anywhere. Babe your gettin' closer...

Eh? So there hasn't been a single download then at all for Elvis? Singles (Physical sales) 01 (NE) Elvis Presley - Way Down - 19,226 Singles (Combined with download sales) 01 (NE) Elvis Presley - Way Down - 19,226 The figures are the same, so he's sold 19,226 "Physical" singles and 0 downloads? I don't see the point in downloads anyway, even if some people claim it to be "the future way". What if you don't have the internet or your computer crashes? You'll lose what you paid for. Might as well buy a proper single / album and then you can put it onto your PC if you want to. Plus by downloading singles I'm assuming you don't get the b-sides? That's the only reason I buy singles of bands I like, for the new b-sides songs!

Is the alternate take of Way Down on the single an unreleased alternate? or one that we have had before?
bossanovababy wrote on April 20, 2005
If i say unreleased alternate will that make you buy it? It`s an unreleased alternate...! TCB
shaneleebrown wrote on April 20, 2005
well, an unreleased track is more tempting than one I already have numerous times - although I must say that it's a far better song/performance/arrangement than The Wonder Of You (which I always think of as a song a Granny might like!) It's a shame that none of the Memphis sessions of 1969 didn't become a number one hit first time around as they sound far more contemporary than any other track that has been released in this campaign.. So, if it is an unreleased take and I do buy it, will it make you happy, scsa???
bossanovababy wrote on April 20, 2005
Ecstatic!!! TCB If you can find it that is!
Sean Ryan wrote on April 20, 2005
I have heard from a reliable source that if you download 'Way Down' 5 times, the fifth time, you get a completely unreleased version which goes on for 1 minute longer than the original, but you have to download it more than 4 times to get it ok.LOL
shaneleebrown wrote on April 20, 2005
Well, if it's going to make you ecstatic I'll just make sure I don't get one! hehehe (just kidding!)
miked wrote on April 20, 2005
yes, good one sean ryan. sure scsa will take you up on that suggestion. only joking scsa. done my bit and downloaded the song. hope its going to count, someone said "use any site that you wanna do"...so thats the one I used!!!
Tina S wrote on April 20, 2005
download it more than 4 times ya right having once is bad but 4 times
bossanovababy wrote on April 20, 2005
Good one guys, not sure Tina S appreciates the subtle humour though!! Anyway i too hope they are counting ours.TCB
Abidaslam1 wrote on April 21, 2005
Tina S doesn't appreciate anything. I wonder what she is doing here. She's always making snide comments. She's one of those people who have a particular image of Elvis, anything else is not valid or worthy of her appreciation. No wonder Elvis got fed up with it all.
shaneleebrown wrote on April 21, 2005
Abidaslam, I don't think you have to agree with the majority to contribute to the boards. I'm sure Elvis got more fed up with "yes-men" rather than those who had the guts to criticise him.
Sean Ryan wrote on April 21, 2005
Whatever anyone thinks of the song.Lets all hope it gets to No.1 this Sunday. It will be amazing if it does.It will be Elvis's 22nd number one.
Eann wrote on April 22, 2005
The alternate version of Way Down on the single is the same as the one on PLATINUM! JFYI
