UK #1 Chart Prediction

February 12, 2005 | Music
An unofficial, although highly reliable source has indicated that the U2 "Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own" track has got the better of Elvis' single "Wooden Heart" according to an update on the Elvis Express website.

Elvis Presley has today made it six out of six on the CD-UK chart. The Official UK chart is announced Sunday February 13th. "Wooden Heart" is shown as #1 on the CD-UK Website Chart, however on the TV show they said they cannot give a #1 as the sales are neck and neck between Elvis and U2.

01 - Wooden Heart - Elvis Presley
02 - Sometime You Can't Make It - U2
03 - Like Toy Soldiers - Eminem
04 - Soldier - Destiny's Child
05 - Almost Here - Brian McFadden & Delta Goodrem

I`m not surprised, our local virgin has copies, I THINK, I say I think as I can`t see them you have to ask for them at the counter as they are not on display. How on earth will casual buyers purchase these if they are not visible. Surely BMG would not be happy if their product was hidden in this manner...

Still no information of how many singles Wooden Heart has sold then.Is this a big secret ? No surpise that U2 are outselling Elvis this week.Wooden Heart is as hard to get hold as A Fool Such As I was. I would willing buy one if I could find one.Although I think U2 will get to no 1 anyway without the problem fans are having.

according to cduk, which isn`t reliable anyway, WH, is `level` with u2. this obviously means the king won`t be no.1 as it isn`t on display for people to buy. i`m one of these fans who is heart poundingly, please godly, desperate for elvis to get to number1.i don`t care if i don`t see it on totp.or hear it on the radio(tho this would obviously help it) i don`t care what the snipers say.no.1 is no.1 and i urge whoever hasn`t found it to search everywhere possible.i feel we need a few more to keep us well away from that overated 60s boyband, and current boybands like westlife. also, does anyone know the cut-off for sales.is it end of sat,or 15.00 sun,or other?

Lets face it - Elvis has virtually NO Saturday sales, as there is never any stock left. If Elvis is neck and neck going in to Saturday then he wont be number One. He was 8,000 AHEAD last saturday and didnt make it, and 6,500 ahead of Ciara and didnt make it that week either. What is a shame is that us hardcore fans are (mostly) able to get our copies early in the week but the average joe who does his casual cd shopping on his only day off of work on Saturday never ever sees a copy of the Elvis single in the racks. It seems for those pushing at the top a Saturday sale accounts for 6,000+ sales. If there was only 3,000 copies of the Elvis cd sold on a Saturday we would have had 2 more number ones. Maybe not this week, who knows, but it is annoying when these singles that appear impossible to get on the Saturday suddenly turn up a week or so later.

Whoever would have thought that such a spell of success could be so disappointing. It's nice to see that BMG still haven't got a clue about selling Elvis. It's so tiring this endless frustration.

With "fans" like you guys who needs critics. In 2001 Elvis was scraping into the Top 20 for a week. Since ALLC all his singles have been automatic top 5 hits, and I would say the 18 No 1s campaign may have just rescued single sales over the counter. As for lack of copies most of us have found that there are 30,000 copies for sale of WH this week, more than in past weeks. PS most of the HMV 10" WH singles were not available to Thurs, I only got mine through the mail today. Long Live The King.

"....single sales over the counter.", you are joking aren't you Skaky? At least up here in darkest North Wales. I've checked all outlets in Rhyl and Llandudno today and none of them have a single copy in stock of any of the singles. I'm OK because I pre-ordered the lot through the mail, but there's no chance of Elvis picking up any Saturday sales around here from those casual buyers, who might then become future fans.

So proud to be an Elvis fan. love all the attention to his music. however, I hope they release more classic songs from the late sixties and seventies. then todays people will realize the true talent he was and how timeless he is. just a thought.

Should have been a singles box set called "ELVIS 1969 The Singles 2005" !! Done in the same format as these singles, with glossy new 1969 pic covers on each one, and each single with an unreleased outtake of a 69 song. Can you imagine the couplings?: !) Wearin that loved on look/And the grass wont pay no mind 2) Suspicious Minds / I'll be there 3) Power of my Love / In The Ghetto ( undubbed) 4) In the Ghetto / My Litle Friend. etc ! All getting to number one, then you would see respect for Elvis Presley !

Bert, I so agree with you....
Shaky wrote on February 12, 2005
The WH single prooved as difficult as ever to get, and our chances of a number one is dictacted by all the other acts playing catch up throughout the rest of the week. On CDUK today they stopped at No.3 and stated it was TOO close to call on Elvis & U2 THEN they show the complete U2 performance which indicates which one they assume or prefer. Surrender - another week, another up-hill struggle!

This is my prediction 01 - Sometime You Can't Make It - U2 02 - Like Toy Soldiers - Eminem 03 - Wooden Heart - Elvis Presley 04 - Soldier - Destiny's Child 05 - Almost Here - Brian McFadden & Delta Goodrem But I hope Wooden heart get to no1
pacer1965 wrote on February 13, 2005
Shaky cd/uk are not allowed to show any Elvis footage because EPE would not give them permission to use any Elvis footage. I have tried all day to try and get Wooden Heart but no luck again. I will probably beable to get it next week with a bit of luck but it wont help Elvis in the charts this week will it ?

A complete and utter balls up by Sony/BMG
Eddie White wrote on February 13, 2005
Whoever is in charge of Elvis's catalogue at Sony/BMG should be sacked. This is an absolute disgrace unparalled in pop music. I want eveyone who reads these postings to be rightfully very angry as to what as happened. We've still got 11 singles to go and, if you're like me, we should still keep protesting. Send e-mails to Sony/BMG, keep the pressure on,Elvis, and all of us deserve better treatment. What a complete shambles from the very start. I am absolutely flabbergasted by what has happened listening to you all. I wish I could get at the person resonsible at Sony/BMG for this debarcle, I would rip his head off. A total disaster.

Again as i said last week record stores are not putting Elvis singles on the shelves until the following week,This week i went to my local HMV,Virgin and an independat store and demanded to see the manager after arguements about this they allowed me into their store rooms and low and behold their was wooden heart on their shelves they all said they would not be putting these on their shelves till this coming monday. But as i had created such a scene about it i could buy a copy there and then.None of these managers would give me a real reason why they would not put these on their shelves, but to me the charts are being rigged by someone with alot of clout who doesnt want Elvis at No1,
Elvis girl wrote on February 13, 2005
I went into my local HMV on Friday and there were no copies of Wooden Heart to be seen anywhere, however they had half a dozen copies of AYLT which i had been unable to find the week before so i bought that.
ranger wrote on February 13, 2005
If hedgehog's experience is genuine, there surely is a campaign to hold the singles back until the second week. Can anyone still doubt this? A word about U2. I think I'm right in saying that U2 have never had a No.1 unless it's with the first release from an album (eg. Desire, The Fly, Discoteque etc.). This is the second release from the album. 95% of people with the album will simply not bother buying this single; they've had the song since November. Many people who like the single will buy the album rather than the single itself. It seems incredible with all this publicity and desire to buy the Elvis singles that U2 could possibly pip him to the No.1. One release is highly sought after; the other is merely an advertisement for an album. It simply suits all concerned for this to happen....record companies, retailers and TOTP spring to mind. Look at the pricing as well; U2's CD1 is only £1.99 and in HMV you can buy all three formats (ridiculous) for £6. Meanwhile, Wooden Heart is sitting in a stockroom out back. It will once again be a hollow victory for anyone pipping Elvis to the No.1 because now, if the records had been made available, he'd be sitting on SIX straight No.1s.....how embarrassing would that be for the go-ahead, 'now', pop-chart?
ranger wrote on February 13, 2005
Sorry, I'll be really quick! The original release date for the U2 single was 31st January. I think it was delayed by one week to allow both itself and Eminem to thwart another couple of Elvis No.1s.

here we go again! Every sunday, the people newspaper prints `the top 20` and this morning it has WH at no.1.they have had all 6 of the king`s songs at no.1, and twice they`ve been wrong. i`m not at all expecting our 22nd no.1 tonight, but seeing him there on sunday morning always plays with my mind and gives me palpatations until 7.01 on teletext! Can someone please explain this chart to me,and also when sales stop being counted? the chart rundown starts,i believe,at 4.00,so surely they must know the positions before that time. so how are we no.1 when sunday`s paper gets printed, then sometimes not at 7.01? it really irritates my head!
Colin B wrote on February 13, 2005
mtm1a - The official chart covers the sales period Sunday morning to Saturday night. Some other charts only go up to Friday night, hence the differences. Various newspapers & magazines use different charts. Some Sunday papers use the 'midweek' chart, which is really only the sales from the previous Monday ! But it's the official chart used by the BBC which will be used for the chart books like Guinness.
2001 wrote on February 13, 2005
I truly believe the charts are being rigged.
mtm1a wrote on February 13, 2005
thanks for that colin b.bear with me though for being a bit thick! do u mean sun morn is the starting point, because if so, singles are released on monday`s, so how can that be? if they start from the monday morning, is sat night the last count,if so what happens to sunday? basically, does anyone out there think WH is in with a chance, going by what i read this morning?
cockney_bill wrote on February 13, 2005
The Virgin chart which is exactly the same as the 'official' chart, has Elvis at No2
mtm1a wrote on February 13, 2005
ok then. no luck with WH it seems. I`ll put my hopes now in 6 singles in the top40! Surely this would be a record, i thought 5 may have been, but haven`t read it mentioned as such?
cockney_bill wrote on February 13, 2005
Elvis is at No 2, 20, 27, 31, 32 & 37
emjel wrote on February 13, 2005
mtm1a, Sorry, but as I've mentioned on other threads on this site, Elvis had 7 singles in the charts in 1957.
emjel wrote on February 13, 2005
Ranger - You've got it right about pricing. U2 £1.99, Elvis £3.99 or £4.99, and that's only if you can find them. I've been in 2 HMV's and 3 Woolworths, and wherever Elvis is in the charts, no records are to be found!! Mid-week, HMV stores seemed to have U2 at No.1, WH at No.2, but empty rack, with a couple of WH's either in the New Release section, or under P for Presley. Very strange!!

I sent an email to EPE regarding CDUK lack of showing ELVIS there reply was if they asked they would let them. and regarding the BBC there are in dispute with EPE aswe all know so give EPE abreak it is BMG/sony who are to blame for lack of cds and vinyl. I went into woolies today 12 copies of Wooden Heart on the shelf but none all last week where have they come from?
Jim Semple wrote on February 13, 2005
Mark - if EPE were asked ? Its EPE who should be throwing themselves to ask all UK stations, how much footage would you like? They dont, because they are so jealous of Elvis's success in the UK and Europe, something they cant acheive in USA and would rather be selling teddy bears or promoting some other crap.
Sean Ryan wrote on February 13, 2005

Son Of Mark 64 wrote on February 13, 2005
Yes if asked. If sony/bmg knew they where going to relase these 18 no1's why didnt they get in touch with EPE to sort out promotion of these records. I have a guess it all boils down to money yes right back to 1973 would you believe. there has never been any comunication between these two companies it seems they want to keep it all for them selves but as I said EPE said if asked they would supply what do want them to do ring every tv station up and ask them would they like a clip of ELVIS. They couldnt even manage to release the 1968 special together eg cd and dvd together

I have never seen a single released on show until the end of the week or at the beginning it was the following Monday, then there were loads on display, makes you think they have been kept back to stop Elvis being number one. A few times Elvis has been away in the lead with sales suddenly the nearest to him in sales has a Saturday wonder day and passes Elvis's total. Sounds fishy either the charts are corrupt or maybe the agents and managers of the would be No. 1's do a mass purchase on Saturday. But we know ELVIS is Number ONE, and if they have to try underhand tactis to beat him, it says a lot for there TV produced Pop Idols, They are crap.
CD King wrote on February 14, 2005
Elvis Presley is still the KING even with Wooden Heart at Number 2. I predict the forthcoming rockers will be NUMBER ONES again for ELVIS as they are superb and brilliant songs - HIS LATEST FLAME, RETURN TO SENDER & DEVIL IN DISGUISE. Long Live Zi True KING!

Maybe cd/uk on ITV were to scared to ask EPE for permission to show Elvis footage(lol). I am a bit worried if I should go to Graceland or not now.Maybe they wont want me there because I am from Britain (lol)Sorry only having a laugh with you all. I dont think they should bother releasing any more Elvis singles in the charts. When the downloads from the internet come in Elvis will not stand a chance. I think its been great Elvis getting in the charts this year. 2005 will be remembered as Elvis' year in the charts.

Fans outside the UK can help. hmv site has un-numbered copies of Surrender available. If all the fans outside the UK who can afford it were to place an order for the single it would be great support for the UK fans who have carried the burden for us all. Spread the word across other Elvis sites, asking people to put in one extra push this week, go that extra mile. Let the uk fans know that they are not alone. Let us BEAT the establishment and get Elvis to #1, Just this once let's show them the POWER of Elvis!!
