This Is Elvis 2DVD Official Release For August 2007?

July 24, 2006 | Video
The Australian E.I.N. site mentions another confirmation that Warner Bros will be issuing a 2 disc DVD release of "This Is Elvis". George Klein mentioned on his all original Elvis hour radio show that "Warner has updated and "refreshed" the original film that was released back in 1981". This latest news follows earlier news from Elvisly Yours' Sid Shaw and the UK magazine, Record Collector (see story dated 23 May 2006), of the release.

Why is everything 'refreshed'? "That's The Way It Is", "On Tour" will probably be refreshed and now "This Is Elvis". Why is this? I want the real stuff. I want what I saw in the theatre when I was a child. By the way: I don't want to see Elvis being killed at the end of "Love Me Tender". Maybe someone can release a refreshed version in which Elvis can escape and now lives a happy life in Hawaii.

With regard to whether "This Is Elvis" should be altered to include more Elvis footage, I'm sure that nobody can deny that the fake voice overs are awful. Even the reconstructed scenes leave a lot to be desired. "This Is Elvis" was a fantastic film when first released, but I do think it needs a major make-over. Anybody that wants a recording of the original cinema version should seek out the screening on BBC2 a couple of years ago. It was shown in widescreen, unlike to previous ITV screenings and the dialogue from 1972 was not edited, as is usually done when shown on TV.

If you remove both 'Love Me' from TIE (and I think you should) and the Elvis-soundalike narration, what you're left with is almost identical to the Great Performances DVD's already on sale.TIE was a good idea at the time and was done fairly well but not exceptionally so, and I think the GP set outdates it. What would be welcome is an FTD release of the soundtrack album expanded to include the early '80s "I Was The One" album of overdubs.

It's one film I really want a lot! I only have the beta tape version (remember those?) and really need the dvd. My take on the re-editing is: the more 'real Elvis' the better. 5.1 surround please.

This is great news...I have always love This is Elvis. I have it on VHS and the soundtrack on cassette. The only issue I have is having to wait another year for it! I enjoyed the impersonator overdubs, I thought it added to the movie. My favorite part is when they show My Way and they cycle through the older footage of him.

in order to have this i copied the original 146 minutes version on vhs from 1981 to a dvd r and i recently copied the double lp to a cdr (so i can enjoy it whenever i like) and i have the short 90 min. version of this is elvis on dvd taped from the BBC a couple of years ago. It's about time to release the cd and dvd of this great movie! i can watch it over and over again. i want it in the best possible quality that can be done these days, with unreleased footage.

I thought the movie was ok but I think better things have come and gone too. I am looking forward to what else is on the set though. I hope the Lp gets rereleased because of the great added bass to Hound Dog and Flip Flop And Fly and the alternate take of Always On My Mind.

That's only good news when they update the footage.
