April 17, 2010 | Other

To support the independant record stores in the USA, the annual 'Record Store Day' is held in the USA. Various record labels are releasing a special limited edition. There will be a new version of an Elvis single too. Record Store Day is  April 17th. Support your local independent music store and purchase a copy of the exlcusive Record Store Day 7" vinyl THAT'S ALL RIGHT/BLUE MOON OF KENTUCKY. It features the original 7" label art in a new picture sleeve. It also includes an mp3 download of both tracks! The record can only be bought in the stores today. Without any doubt, this will be a great collectors item!

I just read this - - I was out in record store today, at FYE (a record/cd chain store here in US) but there was no sign of this at all. Lots of Elvis cds & dvd's tho. But I would have picked this up if they had it.

I looked at the one record store that was supposed to have it in our locale. They didn't receive even one copy! They also didn't get the John Lennon box or the Rolling Stones 45. I did pick up a Jimi Hendrix 12 ep though so it wasn't a total loss.

Well, fellows, I was able to finally land two copies today - not without a fair deal of what some country driving! I decided to venture north about 20 miles where it said two record stores existed that I've never been to. It's a nice little city I've been to but never noticed these shops. Sure enough, my GPS in my car kept me going in circles on the first "record store"-- it turns out it was an Ebay seller who was somehow supplied with the records..His answering machine said "This is not a record store!" Sheesh! I'll definitely pass the word on to the website / sponsors that the whole point is to get people into record stores and maybe make a few discoveries...not enrich an Ebay seller with not brick and mortar store who doesn't even sell them at retail price on the day of the sale! It was getting late (almost 5:30 pm) so I tried the other store. Sure enough, this sloppy little hole had a Rastafarian fellow behind the counter, who commented "oh, we only picked up some of the titles - nothing you'd be too into.." (What am I that much of a straight arrow? :-) I thumbed through some neat C&W and saw some okay Elvis stuff but I'm trying not to spend so easily these days. But it was a nice ride on a beautiful day (fortunately I heard on the radio and began to see the big traffic jam on the way up so had taken back roads to get there thanks to the GPS and local radio updates...and I headed south to another small city that I should have known would have it. They said when I called (now I made sure I did) that they had two copies and would put one aside for me in the last hour if need be. I finally made it down there and they have a big sign about not parking in the adjacent parking lot or you'll get towed right away (the store wasn't really part of the complex) so I had to go back and move...and was told to go around back...which looked like a colony for the homeless and lost souls...! Not needing a mugging to cap of this misadventure, I did a u-turn as casually as possible and got out of there. So given the late hour and the sun going down, I decided to hunt around for a street parking spot---which was tough because there are a lot of restaurants that are popular around there. I fInally got in and there were the two Elvis 45s on displaym, complete with E's uncorrupted visage beaming out from the cover! A couple of stickers are on it - there are some free "downloads" inside (?!) and the "Record Day"logo sticker. Originally I just wanted one but after all this trouble, I knew I'd buy'em both ($8.49 each..ouch but okay!). I saw some other neat stuff I hope to pick up there , including an original SINGER version of the "Sings Flaming Star" Camden set but will be making a major trip there to scour the place another time soon and not just Elvis stuff. (Anyone want that CD of the bootleg "Having on Fun on Stage Volume 4" and one of the "Profile" CDs? :-) It's a true mecca for music lovers and I'll be visiting again no doubt. So its a nice little record -- but now I"m not sure if I want to open it. Vinyl lovers and collectors will understand - the rest of you might scratch your heads at such obsessiveness towards music we have already in one form or another. I probably will play and eep one but I tell you, I'm not sure if it was worth all the hassle and driving time. Fortunately, I used it as a time to clear my head and listen to some music . It's the hunt that is half the fun sometimes..!

"Record Store Day - In USA"???? I live in the USA and have never heard of a "Record Store Day". I missed out on this "great collectors item". Oh well.

Jag, it's a relatively low-key affair but it was covered in many newspapers across the country, including the USA Today among others, plus their website and collector magazines like "Goldmine." I vaguely heard of it the last few years but the Elvis single is what got me to their website to look it up. Just make sure you know which store in advance will have it (should they do it again), rather than spending half a day tracking it down..!
