Words & Music: Gordon Lightfoot

That's what you get for loving me
That's what you get for loving me
Everything we had is gone, you can see
That's what you get for loving me

Now don't you shed a tear for me
I ain't the love you thought I'd be
I've had a hundred just like you
But don't be blue I'll have a thousand before I'm through

That's what you get for loving me
That's what you get for loving me
Everything we had is gone, you can see
That's what you get for loving me

Now there you go, you're cryin' again
You should have known how things would end
But then some day when your poor heart is on the mend
I just might pass this way again

That's what you get for loving me
That's what you get for loving me
Everything we had is gone, you can see
That's what you get for loving me

That's what you get for loving me
That's what you get for loving me
Everything we had is gone, you can see
That's what you get for loving me

Good Lightfoot song done well by Elvis. He really sould have done a full blown folk LP. It would have been a triumph.

first heard it while buying the golden vinyl record "A Canadian Tribute". A soft and touching rendition. Man, he really had it. This song should have come out on a concept album.

This is great. Heard it for the first time on Walk a mile in my shoes. Though it was great. I really enjoy the feeling Elvis put into this song, it´s so relaxed in a way. I don´t listen to it very often though, still it´s a very nice version

I'm a big fan of Gordon Lightfoot but I have never liked this particular song. Even Elvis didn't make me change my mind.

This is a very different kind of Elvis, almost experimental. A very likeable tune, and very very catchy.

A reasonably good Lightfoot song which Elvis handles very well.

I really dig Elvis' attempts at the Gordon Lightfoot songbook. I love this track as I do with Early Morning Rain. I wish that more of this country/folk stuff would have been laid down back then. Add Don't Think Twice.. and what if he had made a full version of I Shall Be Released. It would have been a wonderful album with Elvis in that laidback voice he approached the above mentioned songs with. If only....

A good folk song rendered with nice effect by Elvis. This song would have fit so well on the album "Elvis Now" along side "Early Mornin' Rain" and "Until It's Time For You To Go". If they had added "I'm Leavin" and "Don't Think Twice", the album would have had a much better direction and flow. (especially if "Hey Jude" had been deleted).

Always liked it but it was totally on the wrong LP. A thrown together mishap of unrelated songs. My least favorite Elvis LP ever.

Maybe not strong enough to release as a single but Ideal for an Lp track. I agree with the comment about more folky recordings along the same lines that could have made up a good album of folky's songs.

I have always loved this song by Elvis. This one along with Early morning Rain, Gentle on my Mind, Where do i go from here etc to me was the road Elvis should have concentrated on a lot more in his later years. These tunes to me show up a facet of Elvis" voice not heard in any other style. The laid back more relaxed style ! Love the out takes but the released version is spot on !

Great song i like Elvis version.

The relaxed feeling and atmosphere of this song is great, similar to Early morning rain. The lyrics are somewhat cruel though. Nevertheless, these are great songs to listen to for hours on a quiet Sunday morning. An album in this style would have been great, but as a standalone recording I give this song three stars.

Elvis should've recorded a full length folk album with this and "Early Morning Rain". It would've been a huge hit.

Elvis probably knew it from Peter, Paul and Mary. Nice instrumentation on a likeble song.

Similar to "Early Morning Rain" (both penned by Gordon Lightfoot), but I like this one better.

A breezy folk number that is well arranged, with fine backing both instrumental and vocal, and throws in a few Elvis mannerisms for good measure. Elvis seems to float through this very entertaining track - 4 stars.

I've always admired this marvelous, catchy and fun folk song and Elvis' rendition of it was sensational. I've never skipped it. Elvis should have recorded an album at some point in his career that was totally filled with folk songs, an Elvis album like that would have been a major triumph and completely unique.

Great song much in the same vein as "Early Morning Rain" written by the same song writer, Gordon Lightfoot which really stands out. Too bad it was thrown in on the "Fool" album. A hodgepodge of songs that just didn't fit as a group. Bad management via RCA, really bad. Such a shame.
