One Sided Love-Affair

September 02, 2012 | Other

With clarion call we announced the cooperation with ElvisMatters over five years ago. Unfortunately it turned out that not everyone feels the need to honour the terms of the wager. We are disappointed that the friendship that we thought to have turned out to be nothing more than an opportune usage of our popularity. Now that they are settled, they don’t need us anymore. Still we wish them all the best with serving Elvis-fans.

Could you explain a little more what this is all about please?

What is this all about? Obviously elvisnews.com can monitor and censor remarks which contain too many capital letters, etc., but miss this complete ranting, which has absolutely nothing to do with the song "One Sided Love Affair" from Elvis' first LP back in 1956; of which I can listen but only rate it as album filler, pure and simple.

From what I can gather it seems ElvisNews wanted to cooperate with Elvis Matters in some way but the latter have not kept their word after five years. I'm not surprise anyway, they should change their name to Bouke Matters!!
EJF wrote on September 02, 2012
Hence the title "One-Sided Love Affair" which has nothing to do with the actual song!!

'One Sided Love Affair' an "album filler"? You gotta be kidding me, son. It's one of the best things he ever recorded.

To me it was already clear Elvisnews and Elvismatters we closely related to each other. Any criticism on the fanclub, especially on the big promotion of Bouke, was ignored. I even got warned by the people of this website when mentioning Bouke's name too often in a negative way. Well I have been a member of that fanclub but deicded to leave as it indeed was turning into BoukeMatters- as EJF states ;-)

I'm sorry things have not not worked but again I must scratch my head at some of the opinions rendered here. One Sided Love Affair album filler? Oh my, when will the madness end?

Yes Harvey Alexander and Steve V. I was also flabbergasted to read about One-Sided Love Affair. It is indeed a pity that (again) fans don't seem to be able to worlk together, even though their aim is said to be the same. Maybe it will invigorate the ElvisNews site to new heights!

It is a shame that Elvis websites and sometimes Elvis fans don't get along very well, but such is life...as far as the song OSLA, I love it...One of the many highlights from his first LP (along with "Tryin' To Get To You", "Money Honey", etc), it features a very energetic Elvis giving it his all. This one is kind of a natural predecessor to songs such as "Treat Me Nice" and "I Beg Of You" and I feel a very important song in Elvis' body of 1950's work. I try to respect every one's opinions, but to even mention "Barefoot Ballad" in the same sentence is hard to fathom. BB is one of the five worst songs Elvis recorded in my book and maybe the very worst (along with "Hey, Hey, Hey", "Golden Coins", "Yoga Is As Yoga Does" and "One Boy, Two Little Girls"). I can find merit in almost any of Elvis' recordings and some enjoyment, but these five test my patience. The hokey accent he uses on BB and the 45 "Kissin Cousins" is nothing less than annoying.

I'm way of topic, but just want to chime in that the song One-Sided Love Affair is GREAT! One of Elvis's most enjoyable piano-based 1950's tracks. It is so much fun and so infectious I cannot see how anyone---even non-Elvis fans---can't adore it!

I really did not expect these off topic reactions: strange and a bit funny :)

Sorry the relationship did not work out. Now I must chime in on OSLA. Fantastic song. The very first song I ever noticed a boogie-woogie style piano in that had me rockin as a kid. Dire lyric? All too common a man or a woman is in a OSLA. Happens all the time. Also it took me years to figure out what the heck Elvis was saying. All elements of a classic Elvis song. To put it down, well go listen to your soundtracks then.

To each his/her own, I guess. I happen to like Elvis' version of "Danny Boy". AND "One Sided Love-Affair" for that matter. And (on topic :-) ) yes, too bad the relationship did not work out. Five years is a good run anyway.
Natha wrote on September 04, 2012
Loesje, it is obvious as the question of the WHY did not get any reaction as well as using the title of a song as such. One extra word would have prevented that I guess.

What exactly happened between ElvisNews and ElvisMatters is none of my business, but I can only say it really saddens me that the partnership has come to an end. Both ElvisNews and Elvismatters are two things I really appreciate and matter to me. That will not change in the future as far as I'm concerned. Wishing both of them "all the best". Always El.

I was comparing Elvis' singing style on OSLA to Treat Me Nice, where he seems to have no particular direction but somehow makes the song amazing. Capt Canary, there is nothing, I repeat, nothing redeeming about BB. You can have your noise flutes and "arrangement". Again comparing Elvis' vocal on OSLA to BB is in my book absolutely absurd. OSLA may not be lyrically great, but then again "Hound Dog" and "I Need Your Love Tonight" are not lyrical heavyweights either and I love them both. I will agree that "Cindy, Cindy", "Three Corn Patches" and "Girl Of Mine" are among my least favorite 70's songs, but I love "Danny Boy" and "Mama Liked The Roses"...To each their own I guess.

Could have called it: A Little Less Bouke, a little more Elvis!
TCB1974 wrote on September 05, 2012
Agree that ElvisMatters has become somewhat self indulgent and I really could not care less about Bouke. He does not have the Elvis magic and is an impersonator. If he was very talented, he would start his own career instead of piggybacking on someone else his career. Regarding OSLA - fantastic performance, nothing can beat the Elvis rhythm in the 50's. If one would want to be critical about the 50's, which is not needed at all, it should be the ballads. They became much better in the early 60's.
Natha wrote on September 05, 2012
I happened to investigate bouke's other music. I was shocked. That is so different. He copies ELVIS' voice. So he is just copying and as TCB1974 stated having a ride over the back of somebody else. Furthermore he lacks - for me - that uniqueness ELVIS had. It is a pity that almost all EM activities are focussed on this Bouke. Yes Pieter, a little less B and a little more ELVIS. We want Elvis, as it were! Also it is like Benny stated none of my business what happened, but the way it is brought here (with clarion call) makes one curious. If it had been kept silent, I would hardly have noticed the difference (except for the regular adds).

I was not suprised at all when i read this. For years EM are, almost, shouting on their website how good, marvelous, fantastic etc they are. And let's not forget, they mention at least 2 times their name in every line they are write down. But, facing the facts, they know very little about true facts of Elvis' life ( things like jailhouse rock is from 1958 etc). This club is more about getting the power in Elvis world than anything else. I have to admit, their magazine looks excellent but all is written with pink-coloured glasses on. I heard many differend, not so good, stories about this club over the years. Don't think all is true, but even is 10% is true, it's still sad.
