Battle Of The Giants

September 24, 2011 | Other

Battle of the Giants - The Rock 'n' Pop Years has it's celebrity gala premiere at the Shaw Theatre, 100 Euston Road, London NW1 on Wednesday November 2, 2011.

No nostalgic reflections on the development of popular music culture in the United Kingdom can ignore the impact of Radio Luxembourg. From early light entertainment broadcasts in 1930’s, the propaganda transmissions by the Nazis fronted by Lord Haw Haw during WWII, and the return to commercially supported shows in the late 40s with Rock and Roll in the 50s and beyond, Radio Luxembourg was the sexy alternative to Lord Reith’s BBC.

One of the most listened to radio programmes on 208 from the rock n pop years was the iconic “Battle of the Giants”, an audience participation show where each week the public voted for their favourite.

“Battle of the Giants – The Rock n Pop” Years will remember this radio format on stage with an exciting, highly-talented cast of young, stunning guy and gal singers, actors, dancers and musicians.

Our performers will recreate the hits of the time, in their own style, from Elvis, Cliff, the Beatles, The Four Seasons, Brenda Lee and Cilla Black, who headline the contest, with dozens of other golden classics from the period. “Battle of the Giants – The Rock n Pop Years” is not, however, another tribute-act show, but a musical comedy with attitude! And remember, Radio Luxembourg being a commercial station, we will have to include some of those nostalgic radio advertisements, and teach everyone how to spell K-E-Y-N-S-H-A-M, remembering that we listened to 208 on a transistor radio under the bedclothes, drinking a cup of Ovaltine.

With on screen motion graphics, news vignette spurts to emphasise the time-frame, jingles and guest voice-overs from legendary Radio Luxembourg presenters “Battle of the Giants – The Rock n Pop Years” is the must-see show of the season.

Written by Todd Slaughter (Elvis Presley Fan Club and formally editor of CLUB 208 magazine), and former Radio Luxembourg presentersTony Prince and Paul Burnett.

You have to hand it to the Legendary Mr Slaughter! The man never runs out of good ideas – as a former member of the TTDC this sounds like a bit of a winner!

Look, I think this a brilliant idea and would love to go, but I cant. So Todd, Tony and Paul, how about letting this run a while and then produce a DVD. I'm sure this would not only have UK appeal but also international, Europe probably and maybe some people in the States. I can remember listening to Lux on my tranny, and having to constantly jiggle the arial round to get reception because it used to fade, like it was going around in a circle. Oh, what happy (and sometimes irritating) days. But what a treat when Elvis was played.
