30CD Collection: The Complete Works

September 24, 2008 | Music

According to an interview Megan Murphy did for the Elvis Unlimited magazine, Ernst Jorgensen is working on a 30 CD Box Set that will contain all official masters as released during Elvis' life time with another 3 or 4 hours of the most interesting alternate takes, demos, live recordings, home recordings. The set will be USA made and a limited edition to less than 10,000 units.

Ernst Jorgensen : This is a one shot deal. It's coming, it's here, it's gone as Colonel Parker would say. It will be 30 CDs in a very prestigious packaging with a fantastic book with it. USA made limited edition less than 10,000. It's killed me for 15 months now. The work load has been absurd but I could not deny it. I could not deny being a part of that. To me, it is the most astonishing wonderful idea. Here's a whole definition at this time is that it is all official masters as released during Elvis' life time with another 3 or 4 hours (and we have to define that) of the most interesting alternate takes, demos, live recordings, home recordings. There will not be 1 unreleased element on that box because that would be brutally unfair and only encourage bootlegging. You have to want to own that thing. We're not taking you as hostages. But at the same time, it is also a total restoration of every Elvis master with new digital technology.

Only 10,000?? I want one whatever the price. There will be demand for at least 100,000 of these.

A total restoration of every Elvis master with new digital technology!? WHOA! Am I dreaming? I'll have to save a LOT of money to get those 30 CDs, but they worth every cent of it! I'm dying to hear remastered versions of long lost songs such as "Love Me, Love The Life I Lead," "Early Morning Rain," etc.

So that's why they haven't released "Elvis" (1956) on the FTD label yet...they're working on this misguided monstrosity. I won't be buying this; who needs to buy 30 discs of the same stuff and who isn't completely satisfied with the sound quality of the other FTD offerings?
elvistruth wrote on September 24, 2008
Really great!!!! Absolutely fascinating if the sound will be better that ever. Jorgensen best idea!!!Great Man!!! Please give us the info if it's on sacd or so!!!

ummm how in the world is anyone gonna afford this when the price of the ftd cd's are 30 bucks a cd? and cd's on shopelvis.com are expensive too. this i know wouldnt be sold at walmart so there goes that idea. why even bother doing something like that if there is only 10,000? theres better things that couldve been done to release the 30 cds and all that other stuff.
elvistruth wrote on September 24, 2008
Please take this as a positive note. The Great Mr Jorgensen wants preservate all the masters with the best audio high tech of today, and maybe for a very long future, many times better that FTd even, so please Ernst go ahead and a thousand thanks to you and to Sony!!!

I'll buy this box in the firs second of his release!!!! No more words to describe this GLORIOUS box
SuziB wrote on September 24, 2008
Would have preferred to omit the soundtrack masters but then I guess it wouldnt be complete would it! The FTD cds do not sound good, unbalanced, flat and in some cases distorted so can't wait...The last 30 cd collections were around the £250 -£300 mark (I think!), at that price count me in! When can I order????
Cruiser621 wrote on September 24, 2008
This is another rip off. Who in their right mind will be able to afford this and secondly, why? Especially if you have most everything Elvis released both on FTD and general release from the past. Personally, the sacred cow has been milked twice over already. How many times can you go to the well and ask the same people to buy again and again the same product; even if it is in a different improved digital format. Personally, I'm still waiting for the (2nd) Elvis album to be released on FTD; and yes, I realize there aren't any more versions I don't already have. How about putting Jailhouse Rock out on FTD also?

Jyroflux wrote on September 25, 2008
It's all about the price. I would buy this in a heartbeat if it's not some astronomical amount. $300 sounds fair (that would be $10 a CD). Hopefully, it would be less, but more than that I doubt it would sell.

I would love this and would probably get it,but a limited edition of 10,000 copies, I have no chance, it should be unlimited so I can save for it and pick it up when I want, ok I know it will be on torrent sites but I want the real deal, give the fans a chance
elvistruth wrote on September 25, 2008
Boys and girls: This is the most important Elvis release after 1977 and is ridicoulous to think it's the same thing, this is the definitive Elvis legacy document with the best sound ever. I will repeat to you: there will be not another at any audio phisical format, do you understand? To think that Ftd or the 50,60,70's boxes is the same sounds absolutely absurd. Yes, they are 10.000 units but maybe if are sold out there'll another edition. The important thing, and here I'm absolutely with Susie B., that the Elvis sound will be benefit with this. Now we have at most (Ftd) an overall sound of 7 of 10 (and only with latest two years of Ftd releases) and we need 10 of 10 (or at least 9 of 10). The question is easy. Buy the last works of 50's or 60's or 70's artists and compare to the greatest, Elvis, and sadly our hero lost the competition. My eixample again is with the great Nat King Cole last releases on Collector's label/Capitol. they sound so fresh and good that are one thousand better that Elvis last and best cd ever releases or even the majority of releases of today!!!Incredible. And to my amazement they are not on SACD!!! If you haves the Elvis Oldies two vinyl releases Top album boxes (5 albums each) you can notify that the problem is not with original RCA or with losing masters because they sound absolutely one million times better that any Elvis cd, so what happen? It's impossible to have Elvis on cd at the very first place of audio scale.? No, thanks to the Jorgensen patience it will be possible. Thanks to this wait of 10 or 15 years it will be possible. If not, you can take the great Sinatra, they released the absolutely faboulous Reprise 20 cd box in 1995 and now (with an audio tech many times better) is very complicated rerelease with better sound! With Elvis complete works we're very very lucky. This is the last chance, no doubt about that, and also the very first time to have all the masters with an updated sound, at the same technology level quality all the 30 cds, and I'm conviced it will be an complete triumph of SONY, specially for Ernst legacy and for any expert study of 20th century popular music. So please before say any comment more think in these words and in any case: 1.- do not buy if you are not interested, will be 10.000 that are (and many more) 2.- but no compares to anything released by Ftd or Bmg of the past or today because are absolutely so different as day and night. And my last words to Ernst: THANK-YOU FOR DO IT. Your legacy will be THIS box more that any other thing released in your long carees as Elvis producer. Absolutely convinced of that, and absolutely convinced that you knows well. And please, Sony, put all efforts to make the sonic restauration REAL, remember the great sonically talking sacd Bob Dylan box? So I (we) want the same OR BETTER quality that this. Because ELVIS is the greatest and needs the greatest sound ever!!!!!

Oh boy! I think this is for the rest of world who like to have an Elvis collection. Probably my wife's postal book club will present it as unique, a get-it-while-you-can box. NO, i won't sell it. I collect All master, live, private what ever song of Elvis. I don't collect cd covers to put on the shelf just to fill space.

Have to admit i'm surprised at the positive reaction here - i was expecting you all to be throwing tomatoes or something lol!! We had a collection like this back in the 90's that are now available as seperate cd's so why this and why now? I agree with some people that we already have all this and the limited edition will mean it won't add to the saturated compilation market. But couldn't the Cd's been available seperately though for those of us who may want particular albums or is that planned for a later stage? I'm not criticising Ernsts hard work just the way it's done. I'll wait for reviews before I buy it and if it's gone its gone? I doubt it." There will not be 1 unreleased element on that box" doesn't attract me personally. We need original albums in the shops and avilable on-line in the best sound for future generations to enjoy.
TBG wrote on September 25, 2008
ANY Elvis-release with significantly improved sound is welcome in my collection. If the sound on these recordings are anything like the quality on Elvis No1 and Elvis Second to None I will buy it. The remastering on those cd's was amazing. If Ernst is doing the same job on all masters I can understand why he feels overwhelmed with work. I am looking forward to this collection and will buy it if it is as good as it sounds. This is great news Ernst, wish u all the best on this project!
elvistruth wrote on September 25, 2008
TBG: Absolutely agree with you!!! Then will be the greatest Elvis release ever!! I read at another forum the possibility that will cost $1000$ !!! and I think it can be not true. Maybe 400 or even $500 well... but $1000...we are not millionaires!! Who knows but with a world actually economically with great troubles a music box at 1000$ is almost a joke!!!

I think this is a great idea...as long as the price is right, no pun intended. With the economy the way it is right now, and the President was just on tv last night talking about how bad it is, with this only being limited to 10,000 copies, not everybody will be able to buy it. I'm also assuming that with every master being released on this in Elvis's life time, that means evry song from every album and every single (that didn't appear on a album)..will be on this, as well as the movie stuff. Didn't they release, oh several years ago, the "Blue Suede Shoes" box set that had every album in that as well? I remember seeing it on Amazon, and it wasn't exactly cheap.
theoldscudder wrote on September 25, 2008
The sound everybody is salavating about will be outdated in a few years. Then you will have to buy another set & from there it will never end. I bet most of the pics in the book have been released. Shame on you Ernst.

JerryNodak wrote on September 25, 2008
"Best sound ever" is subjective. Most fans salivated over the sound on E1 and E2. Personally I didn't care for it. As for the price; at $10.00 a cd that's $300.00 USD so it's already out of my price range. It's a limited collectors set of 10,000 so it's likely to more be than that. One source I saw on another respected message board said he had been reliably informed that the price tag would be arould $1000.00 USD. I'm satisfied with sound I've got. I plan to buy all the FTD 'Classic' releases and then I'm done buying.
Jyroflux wrote on September 26, 2008
"Best sound ever" is subjective. If it's overly-compressed I wouldn't touch it for $100. I was so giddy at the news I didn't think about this possibility when I posted earlier. Has anyone heard what Ernst's position is on "hot mastering"? I guess we will have to wait for some more concrete news about the release...

elvistruth wrote on September 26, 2008
Yes it will include all live masters!!!! At last the official Madison square garden album will be a great sound recording master piece!!! (now is the worst audio official album)
JerryNodak wrote on September 26, 2008
I have no doubt the MSG album(s) will eventually get a sound upgrade with the FTD treatment. That will be good enough for me. A lot cheaper too.
clp1093 wrote on September 26, 2008
Before we all get carried away regarding sound quality, I think we have to hear some tracks. In late October Sony Japan are releasing I think 5 albums using this new SHM technology which was developed by JVC. I have them on order and will report on sound quality. If you go to Elvis World Japan there are some more details. some of you may remember or own the Japanese 'paper sleeve' collection which were released some years back. These are in my opinion some of the best souding releases. They were mastered using 24bit 96kHz technology. There is another batch due for release in November, 12 titles, including Good times, Today, Something for Everybody. full details again on Elvis World Japan website.
Steve V wrote on September 26, 2008
But as the oldscudder pointed out - that is exactly the point. Another new sound technology. I know people who bought all the Japan paper sleeve releases because of their sound quality. There are those who buy the remastered Budd releases because of the sound. Elvis At Sun CD used new sound technology. Dont you get it? In 5 years this sound will be obsolete when a newer technology will be invented. Are you going to buy these songs again? I bet this will be closer to the 700-1000 range in price, and for that they can keep it. I agree with Jerry about certain albums like MSG needing an upgrade. Id buy those as stand-alone CDs.
Jim Semple wrote on September 26, 2008
Each to their own but I cannot get remotely excited about this at all. What you gonna do in 3 yrs, 5yrs, 10yrs time, keep buying sound upgrades of the same songs ??. Enjoy.
EspenK wrote on September 27, 2008
To me personally this is perfect timing from Ernst&co. I have come to a stage where I am fed up with releases of mediocre sounding (at best...) live recordings of mostly the same songs, or even the mostly uninspired and boring 70s studio rehearsal sessions. I still miss most of the movie soundtracks though, I've got most of them only on vinyl (and no record player anymore) so that alone is a reason for me to get this box. Additionally, if they succeed in making a *good* selection of live performances and real highlights, well then I will no longer need to browse through the other piles of CDs in order to find some moments worth listening to. If done right this will be the last major Elvis release I'll ever buy. I welcome this release with open arms.
elvistruth wrote on September 27, 2008
EspenK: Really ABSOLUTELY agree with you! You're great! This is the last CHANCE to release it!!
Suzi wrote on September 27, 2008
SteveV, to address your point. I bought the Japanese paper sleeves collection (all of them), and the Japanese Singles collection box set, plus the Blue Suede Shoes collection (velvet box set) plus I'll also buy this. And will I but another version 5 or 10 years later with improved sound? Yes...
theoldscudder wrote on September 27, 2008
And who's to say the sound is really any better. The selected live performances will more than likely wil be taken from the lously Live In Vegas box set. You will have seen most of the pic's in the book. They always take the easy way. And for all this duplication you pay $500.00 +.
JerryNodak wrote on September 27, 2008
Chill out, Suzi. It's your money. You're free to spend it as you wish. Today, tomorrow or forever. Personally, I'm done playing the "better sound" game. With the high cost of gas, food and the economy crumbling all around us here in the U.S. there's no way I can justify spending money on this collection which will contain nothing I don't already have, whatever the cost.

If you follow the Elvis Australia link above, it tells you the set will be more than $1000 USD. Sorry, but that's way too much. I can live with the discs I have. I have all the studio masters that have been released (plus a lot of other stuff as well).
TBG wrote on September 28, 2008
When I wrote significantly improved sound, I ment significantly improved sound - not slightly improved. I don't know how much an engineer can improve sound on soundtracks like Double Trouble etc that where recorded at the sound stage and not professionally in a studio. But I will buy it if the reviews are good and the sound really has been improved so that even an amateur like me can hear it. It all comes down to that, the quality of the sound. I don't care if it's Chesay, Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce or whatever, if the sound is great I will buy it - even if the price is USD 1000. With only 10.000 copies it will sell out in no time..IF the quality is as good as they say it will be. Rock on! ;-)
Jim Semple wrote on September 28, 2008
As Jerry quite rightly pointed out about todays economy, there isnt a chance in the world they will sell 10,000 copies at $1,000 each. I am sure they have done their homework and research but I would be amazed if there was a demand for this release. I'll just wait for the days when the powers of be release upgraded version of Elvis on Tour, Elvis CBS etc. Soundwise is interesting subject, I still love putting on those original 50's vinyls !!
Suzi wrote on September 28, 2008
Today's economy? What has that got to do with demand for this set? The intended market for will be able to afford it irrespective of highs or lows with the economy - I write as a corporate lawyer specialising in credit legislation. Those suffering now were unlikely to have ever been the target audience for this. I'm lucky I can buy any Elvis release I want - and I have in excess of 3000 Elvis cds - and I will certainly buy a couple of these, one to play and one to keep in mint condition. Can't wait for the release date....
JerryNodak wrote on September 28, 2008
You're right Suzi this set isn't aimed at the regular Joe who works hard every day and has to worry about paying bills and perhaps even where his next meal is coming from. I'm so happy for you you've got money to burn. Maybe you'd like to do some volunteer work at a soup kitchen or something and actually do something productive. The reason this economy is in such a mess? Politicians and lawyers.
Suzi wrote on September 29, 2008
JeeryNodak - 'work hard', well I work 18 hours a day 7 days a week. Lest I forget, but I dont dig ditches so I couldnt possibly be embraced by your definition of working hard... I worked extremely hard in my career, inlcuding studying whilst well below the poverty line for 6 years, doing Duty Solicitor roster for people most of you guys would cross the road to avoid. Anyone with financial struggles and worries wasnt going to buy this anyway, so what's your point exactly? Other to attack someone you dont know, someone you have no idea what they do in their life -you've made yourself look an idiot, but that probably wasn't too hard was it.
RonBaker wrote on September 29, 2008
When a person starts bragging about how much money they make and how many Elvis cds they can afford, then they are asking to be brought down a notch. Jerry is entitled to his opinion. When Elvis music is only for the 'elite', then it is removed from the man himself. Elvis started poor and always kept that in mind with his product giving good value for money spent. That's why poor kids like me could spend 97 cents on a new Elvis 45. That's why there were ep's for those of us who couldn't quite afford an album.
Suzi wrote on September 29, 2008
Ronbaker, are you for real??? Since when was Elvis ever involved in pricing decisions? He wasn't. Indded, he had no input into any business decision whatsover - picing was a reflection of the market decided by margin and revenue strategies. When did I brag about how much money I earn? I merely said I can afford to buy whatever I want Elvis-wise. Nor did I brag about how many cds I have, my point was that notwithstanding how many , I will still buy this new collection. Many Elvis fans earn significant salaries, why shouldn't Ernst et al supply proudcts for this market as much as any other?
Steve V wrote on September 29, 2008
Those that can afford it & want it should buy it. We are free to make those decisison, this is a democratic society afterall. I wont but it for several reasons among those being, 1) I can no longer fall for the 'new technology' tagline everytime a cd is upgraded. How many times can u keep buying the same songs and what do I do with the cds I already have? , 2) the cost, and 3) and this will annoy some of you but, at the ripe old age of 57, I come to realize that 40% of Elvis' recorded output is crap and songs I never want to hear again for the rest of my life. When I was a teenager I looked for the silver lining in many a bad LP but the truth is, he has prob recorded more bad songs that any other major performer, so why would I want to pay a lot for songs I'll never play?
Suzi wrote on September 29, 2008
SteveV, not sure that I put it as high as 40% but I generally agree with you. Furthermore, this isn't restricted to film soundtracks, Elvis recodred some terrible stuff from the 50's through to the 70's, the latter including some woeful stuff such as Thrree Corn Patches, Girl of MIne, Cindy CIndy etc. But whatever the percentage, there's a base ot recordings I tend to listen to -doesn't mean I dismiss the rest, just these are my favourites and there's probably 200 or so. However, even whilst some of Elvis' output can be embarrassingly bad, there's a ton of stuff where the raw material is elevated many many leagues above where it deserves to sit, on the basis of Elvis' genius and I want to have these recordings (in the best sound possible) as much as the truly great (Merry Xmas Baby, Stranger..Town, Reconsider Baby, Always on My Mind, My Baby Left Me etc etc) as they are the embodiment of at least part of the reason I love Elvis - his vocal and interpretational genius.
Memphisbar/Tenerife wrote on September 29, 2008
In the years after ELvis death, many cd's were released, than we get the FTD releases, now we get from the "Memphis Mafia" new style (sorry but that the way I see), a 30cd boxset with all the Elvis releases? I don't believe it, after these box-set we get more unreleased material of Elvis, in other words when these cd box is complete of all Elvis material, the FTD releases is ended.
Chop983 wrote on September 29, 2008
Has anybody worked out how many of the 30CD will be masters and how many will be extras, and Steve V your right about the crap songs but I'd also add the Classics like Hound Dog, Heartbreak Hotel and Love me Tender, I never listen to these songs as I've heard them so many times already. The 60's Masters has the best good/bad song ratio of any set.
mature_elvis_fan75 wrote on September 29, 2008
Steve i agree also, its amazing how a singer can record such great stuff and then record junk in between,it is such a twisted legacy,by the way id call out songs fron some of the movies before three corn patches(i admit i like the song)i also like you cannot and will not upgrade everytime there is some new sound, this is great way to make easy money without really trying, how much better can you make a song that is at least 31 one years old to begin with? What am i to do,buy all the classic albums(hope for good sound)then buy this? And please dont tell me its for the casua buyer cause it aint,i dont know who it is for, like Elvis music, the way recordings are handled makes me wonder the ones behind the scenes makeing these decisions,it like some of Elvis is hard to understand!
John4126 wrote on September 29, 2008
Steve - with you my friend. Our 'being an Elvis fan' will no doubt be questioned by the blind loyal faction that claim everything laid down on tape by Elvis is head and shoulders above anyone else. The same that rave over Easy Come, Easy Go and Love Letters etc.. I have a huge music collection encompassing a wide range of genre - Jay Z to the Beatles to Hank Williams and Nirvana et al. I find myself disappointed and angered by Elvis' inconsistent recordings but thankfully there is plenty to enjoy. We should never pretend that every recording or live show he did was in keeping with the tag 'The KIng'. As for this release i cant see who it is aimed at - maybe those that re-joiced at the release of the camden albums recently?!
emjel wrote on September 30, 2008
Steve - I agree with many of your comments, but not necessarily with the "40% is crap. Each song recorded is subjective to each individual's listening, and whilst many do not merit Elvis' talent etc just becaujse you do not like it does not make it crap. Many complain about the movie recordings, but they should be listened to in the context they were recorded - they were not designed to be the equivalent of Pet Sounds/Sgt Pepper/Tubular Bells/Thriller etc, but were recorded as cross marketing for the films. With reference to this release, if you've got the money to buy it, then fine. At the moment, I am in the camp of "probably won't", but until I know the price etc, I won't make a final decision. Who is it aimed at? Maybe upcoming/or existing music historians who want to be able to follow Elvis' musical legacy from start to finish - to observe the peaks and troughs in the careeer. Probably the die hard fan who must have everything. But at the end of the day does it really matter. It's a commercial decision by BMG and it's their money that will be invested in its initial cost. At least they are not playing dirty by including one or two rare unreleased tracks to encourage all fans to make a purchase. The FTD releases will still come over the next few years so I am sure there will be plenty to look forward to in this area.

Am I right in saying Softly As I Leave You was released as a single only in 1978? If so, will the master be included in this collection? How many masters (live and studio) did Elvis record in his lifetime? If we get 30 CDs containing each an average of about 25 songs, that equals about 750 songs. Isn't that more or less the amount of total masters he left us with? If so, then how come there will be 3-4 hours of other stuffs included. Do we only have the rehearsal (with vague backing) of Oh Happy Day? Elvis' voice is powerful on this one. If I could have my wish, Ernst will have some great backing added and this rehearsal also restored to a glorious-sounding master. The same with The Twelfth Of Never (and maybe others?) I mean, while in the process of upgrading ALL Elvis' masters, why not go for broke? Or will we have to make do forever with (some very listenable) home remix versions of these? Does the catch lies in "released during Elvis' lifetime?"

Good point "emjel"..especially the part about the other 40% of Elvis's music being crap, that's just one's opinion. I listen too everything the man ever put out, while I will admit some of the songs from the movies I don't listen too very often..not all, just some. But every artist puts out stuff that you're not gonna listen too as much, that doesn't make it crap, it just doesn't stand up up too the other stuff.
Steve V wrote on October 07, 2008
Thats more than one's opinion. Thats many opinions from many people. A crap song is a crap song just as a good song is a good song, and Queenie Wahini, Cheasy, Petunia, and many others are crap. You think if Elvis hadnt sung them you'd have ever even played them in your life? C'mon. According to what Ive read he thought they were crap also. Play one of these songs for the average person in the street (dont tell thm who the artist is) and then ask for his/her opinion. You know what it would be.
