On this picture we can see Elvis with behind him a policeofficer. But at the left we notice Sonny West, one of his boduguards. This one is from 1970, Februay 28th, just before (or after) his first shows at the Houston Astrodome. This picture shows us again that Elvis always took time to speak to his fans or give an autograph!
On Wednesday 25th February 1970 Elvis flew to Houston, Texas. The performances at the Houston Astrodome, at the Annual Texas Livestock Show, will be the first outside Las Vegas since 1961 for Elvis. Over a period of three days Elvis will give six shows. On Friday the 27th Elvis gives two shows; at 2:00 and 7:45 P.M.. Elvis enters the arena in an open jeep, which gives the fans a chance to see Elvis ‘a little bit closer.’ There are 36.299 people at the Astrodome, 10.000 more than the previous record. On Saturday Elvis gives again two shows; at 2:00 and 7:45 P.M.. The evening crowd of 43.614 sets a record for indoor rodeo performances in any arena. It would hold for eight years! For the third day in a row Elvis gives on Sunday two shows in the arena, this time at 2:00 and 7:00 P.M.. Over the three days 202.989 people have seen The King in action!!
