Tom Jones Honours Elvis

July 26, 2004 | People
Last Friday, in his show at Edinburgh Castle, Tom Jones paid tribute to Elvis. During the encore that started with “Hi Heel Sneakers”, he stated that it was 50 years ago that Elvis went into the Sun Studio in Memphis and recorded “That’s All Right”, before bursting out in a complete version of the song and “going on with what they rehearsed”. Of course the show had more Elvis-links, since Tom has to sing “his” “I’ll Never Fall In Love Again” and “Green Green Grass Of Home”, but it also included a very remarkable, swinging version of “My Babe”.

Tom Jones always pays tribute to Elvis in his concerts. Also in his albums, in "Reload", there's a cover of "I'm Left, You're Right, She's Gone". In 2000, when he played in Zaragoza, he introduced this song as a tribute to a friend of his, Elvis, who recorded it at 19.

A couple of years back, 1999 I beleive, Tom Jones came to Victoria, British Columbia. It seemed a bit odd, as Victoria has no big venues to play other than open air. The theatre at which he played holds approximately 2500. His show was great and included many new songs from his last album, "The Lead and How to Swing It". Naturally, as with Elvis, the audience wanted nostalgia. The highlight, at least for me, was "Walking in Memphis". When the opening piano chords hit I couldn't beleive it. This was his tribute to a friend on this night. Mr. Jones was spotted at a local pub and to a man everyone was impressed with his charm, charisma and approachability. Indeed, Rock on Tom.

A few years ago i saw Tom perform 'Jailhouse Rock'...WOW! it was a sensational version, he pulled out all the moves and the band was spot on,, his voice reminded me of El's version from the 68' special. The best cover version by a mile. Tom always has nothing but kind things to say about Elvis, acknowledges the groundbreaking achievements, and how he was THE reason Tom is where he is today. Keep on rockin Tom, the Elvis fans love you too!

Elvis and Tom Jones were friends, allright, but when it comes to music Jones is more a fan of Jerry Lee Lewis than Elvis. I qoute from the book "Whole Lotta Shakin´ Goin´ On" Jones answer to the question "if there was such a thing as a rock´n´roll hall of fame, where would You rank Jerry Lee in that place?": "Well, for my own personal taste I would think that he is number one".
