Sun Keeps 'Rockin' On Home Video And DVD

August 14, 2002 | Video
The documentary "Good Rockin' Tonight: The Legacy of Sun Records" will be released Oct. 1 on DVD/VHS via Image Entertainment. The film, which aired last November on PBS in the U.S., features such luminaries as Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton, and Led Zeppelin's Jimmy Page and Robert Plant paying tribute to the artists of Sam Phillips' pioneering Memphis label, which helped usher in the mainstream acceptance of Rock And Roll.

The documentary intercuts interviews with Sun artists such as Billy Lee Riley, Sonny Burgess, Rufus Thomas, and Jack Clement with performances from contemporary musicians. The likes of Kid Rock, Third Eye Blind, Live, Tom Petty, Chris Isaak, and others cover early standards from Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Junior Parker, and Hank Williams. McCartney handles Presley's "That's All Right, Mama," with help from Presley guitarist Scotty Moore, while Page and Plant tackle Clarence Williams' "My Bucket's Got a Hole in It."

The DVD follows on the heels of a 44-track, two-disc set from BMG Heritage that honored the 50th anniversary of the label. The set, released Aug. 6, compiles early and rare recordings from the Sun vaults.
