Preview Complete '68 Comeback Special

July 26, 2008 | Music
This is a preview of the upcoming "The Complete '68 Comeback" special package which is due for release August 2008.

First impression: there is a very nice and informative booklet included and the overall sound is very good, thanks to Vic Anesini. The audio on the dressingroom rehearsals seems to have improved quite a bit as well! The Boxset is dedicated in memory of Todd Morgan. This Box-set fits nicely next to the Complete '68 Special DVD Box-set.

Thanks to BMG UK you can still win a copy of this set, see our portal!

What's the consensus of opinion about the deluxe vs standard edition? Is it worth the extra for a "lavish foil-stamped box, with lift off lid"? And what about the standard edition? Anyone know how the cheaper one is packaged?

I see nothing new here and I cant warrant spending money on product Ive had so many times over. Plus Id rather watch the stand-up & sit-down shows than just listen to them.

...maybe nothing new, but there is much improved sound quality especially for the dressing room rehearsals..and last but not least it's complete so i will buy it anyway.. cause it really looks awesome.. but not everyone has to buy it offcourse, that's up to you..i allready made up my mind

I agree with Aaron. And for me the big selling point is the name Vic Anesini. This guy knows what he is doing. The studio stereo tracks on disc one should be outstanding. Elvis at his best, and rockin' hard.

OK, it looks nice. But why not a 5 , 6 or 7 cd set with a lot of outtakes on it. And why isn't the complete road medley extra on cd 1 ? Enough space on disc 1 for the long road medley. The same for the gospel medley, why not the long version as on the dvd ? I have a lot of questions for this cd release. So the titel isn't right here: COMPLETE '68 Comeback Special. No way, it's a nice box but far from complete. Why not a box with more material so that we really could have the complete one in our livingroom ?I can't believe this. This could be the product of 2008, what a waste... I guess hoping for vol.2 is waiting for nothing (or release it together with the Elvis on Tour dvd, around 2027, 50 years after !!)

I'll just simply say I agree with Steve V. In addition: I'm not playing tthe improved sound game anymore. There will ALWAYS be improved sound. Those of you young enough will experience vastly improved sound on this material 20 years from now regardless of format. Also, I wish I could just buy disc 1. THAT'S what I'd be interested in.

Herman: 5, 6, or 7 disc? Are you rolling in dough? This set is aimed primarily at the general public. They're not going to part with that much money. Particularly with the high cost of gas and food these days. I'm speaking here about the U.S. Outtakes? They'll be on the FTD "classic" version of the original album which they WILL release at some point anumber of years down the road. Why not the long versions of the gospel and road medleys? Because they weren't part of the ORIGINAL album. If you'll check the title of disc 1 it says: ORIGNAL album.
Herman wrote on July 27, 2008
JerryNodak, I am not rolling in dough. But if disc 1 is the original album why is there: 09) It Hurts Me 10) Let Yourself Go 11) A Little Less Conversation 12) Memories (stereo Mix) ? They where not on the original album. Yes, you could say: that's the bonus and that's true. But if you read my message good, I said that there was enough space for the long road medley, extra on cd 1 and also as a bonus. So 2 times the road medley like they did with 2 times Memories. And do you think that all the outtakes will be on the FTD release of this album ? I don't think so. They should have done some outtakes on this release. As you know, the essential series vol. 1 - 6 was also for general public. But like I said: It's a nice release but far from complete. When they release all the material from the 68 comeback than we talk about COMPLETE. This is just a new upgraded version of the '68 comeback special. First Memories: the 68 comeback special on 2 cd's in 1998 and now this one another upgraded version with 4 cd's. When will we have another upgraded version with 6 cd's ? It's always upgrade, upgrade....come on, give us the complete version.

Herman: The 3 DVD Comeback SE from EPE is about as "complete" as I can take. For me that was so complete it was exhausting. I had to force myself to watch all those production number bits and pieces. I'll probably never sit through them again. No, I don't expect all the outtakes to be on the FTD classic version of the original album when Ernst and crew get around to it, but I expect Ernst will make sure the "bast" is there and that will be good enough for me. I'm not an Elvis fan who wnats or needs everything. I stopped being one of those when cds took over from vinyl.
Herman wrote on July 28, 2008
JerryNodak, I agree that I also don't watch all the production numbers again. I don't have to hear a song about 20 times over and over again. But for me personel, I was just hoping for a little extra outtakes on this cd set. As you know that some production numbers are very good and if you have them on cd you don't have to search on the dvd anymore. And nice for in the car. And indeed, the best outtakes will be on the FTD release of the classic album serie.

Hi there, for me discs 2 and 3 are most intersting, since I think those shows are most important for Elvis' decision to go back to live perfomances, and for the first time we get all shows complete. (on the older releases of the stand up shows "Blue Suede Shoes" was switched, remember ?). Nice idea to pack all 4 shows on 2 CD's But why include the lip-synced version of "If I Can Dream" two times? I would have loved it to get some outtakes of this song instead (e.g. all 3 from the vocal overdub which are on the DVD set, too). Disc four is really not necessary for the general public, I think, so a 3-CD.boxed set would have been enough, in my opinion (and cheaper). I guess I will never listen to those rehearsals again.

My guess is when the FTD comes out (with original cover thankfully) it will have studio outtakes like the 'let yourself go' Cd. I also agree that the road medley should be in the complete order if this indeed supposd to be a 'complete' boxset.

My patience with Sony-Bmg has finished. The review from our friends of Norway is definitive. I don't want this poor release. It's incredible! Year 2008 and worst sound that a release of past century. That's only happens with Elvis. For me they are absolutely joking with the fans. Please we can see how are the boxes, regular cd releases of Sinatra, Dylan, Stones, Richard, Pink Floyd, Genesis, Nat King Cole, Dean Martin, Chris Ledoux, Marty Robbins, Jim Reeves, and many more great artist...always better that Elvis . Remember the 70's box released without more of 30 studio master tracks left out? And this was the better box ever (7 unreleased songs), but always incomplete things. And the sound... always I'm working with my pc music program for updating the dry sound of FTD. Yes, more better that many years ago but always worst that the rest of great (or no great) musicians and singers of all time. It's real or a nightmare hear a million of time better sound on music of the 40's that the entire career of Elvis? Sometimes that happen, believe or not. Specially with releases of last couple of years. Elvis absolutely ignored by Sony. And I don't want to speak of the Estate. They are busy thinking how making money with the new toy with Elvis head and animal body. So this is the sad "elvistruth". If only that can be changed...
