TUPELO, Miss. (AP) - The Lee County sheriff, a cousin of Elvis Presley, was killed in a shootout with a suspect early Friday.

Sheriff Harold Ray Presley died at North Mississippi Medical Center, officials said. The suspect also was killed, Highway Patrol spokesman Warren Strain said. "He passed away a little while ago,'' Len Grice, the hospital's director of marketing, said shortly after 7 a.m. The sheriff's father was the brother of Elvis Presley's grandfather. That makes them first cousins once removed. The late king of rock 'n' roll was born in Tupelo in 1935. When he was first elected in 1993, Harold Presley said he received calls from Elvis fans who wanted to buy his campaign signs and added, "God has blessed the Presley family.''
