Parents Fight To Call Baby Girl 'Elvis'

June 04, 2008 | People
A Swedish couple have been banned by authorities from calling their baby girl 'Elvis', on the grounds that Elvis isn't a good name for a girl. The decision was made by Swedish tax authorities, with whom babies' names must be registered.

The couple decided to call their five-month old girl Elvis despite the fact that they don't own any of Elvis Presley's records, or even like him very much, The Local reports. The girl's mother, Linda, told the Swedish Metro newspaper: 'We talked about lots of names and then Elvis popped up. We thought it was a name that was both pretty and gender-neutral. We're not Elvis Presley fans at all.'

But the Skatteverket (the National Tax Board) disagreed about the whole 'gender-neutral' thing, saying in their report: 'It is the National Tax Board's view that Elvis is a first name of a masculine type and as such may, in light of standard practice, be considered clearly inappropriate as a first name for a woman.'

The parents plan to appeal the ruling.

There have been a number of run-ins between the Skatteverket and parents desiring an unusual name for their sprog. In 2007, one couple successfully appealed a ban on them naming their baby girl 'Metallica', and in 2004, a change in the law was proposed to help out a couple who wanted to call their son 'Superman'.

It's a strange name for a baby girl i must admit ...but it is they re choice and we must respect that No authorities should be alowed to change this decision.

And I thought the nanny state was out of control here in the UK. You poor Swedes really have no freedom at all do you. I fail to see how a name like "Metallica" can in any way be deemed more appropriate than "Elvis". Too much Alpine air methinks.

Please think of her when she grow's up, she might not forgive you. Call her Elloise that's close enough, isn't it !

What business is for Sweden to tell a family what name they can or can't give to a child

So if a family wants to name their kid Jethro Tull or Old Shep, I guess they are out of luck.....lol

I told this story to my daughter, Tortoise, and she agreed that it'd be silly to call a baby girl Elvis. My other daughter, Marshmallow, agreed too.

There is no clear line between what is someones freedom to do as he or she pleases and what is common sense and goverment is there to provide some rules. Is there anyone who believes that no rules should be there and anyone can do anything? Not many I hope. As far as giving a name to your child, my personal opinion is that there should be some rules regarding the 'official' name registred in the counsil. In that respect I agree with the Swedish authorities. Elvis is a masculine name! In the end you can nickname your child whatever you like. The possibilities are endless...

And then there are Cher's children: Chastity & Blue. One reminds me of a big fat key wrapped in a chain & the other brings to mind an old hunting dog. Although the dog is probably cute. Believe me, there are names worse than Elvis regardless of gender.

Deke Rivers has a point. It reminds me of "A boy named Sue". I agree that it is the parents decision, but as you can come across awkward names like the mentioned names Metallica or Chastica it is at least better to have a name like Elvis.
