King On The King

In this week's Entertainment Weekly horror author and pop culture pundit Stephen King picks his 24 greatest rock records all time (with the emphasis on uptempo rocking). Elvis is the artist with the most entries at 3 with "Don't Be Cruel" #16, "A Big Hunk O' Love" #10 and "Burning Love" #2. ("Anarchy in the UK" by the Sex Pistols is #1 on the list.) About "Burning Love" King tells us Elvis "saved the best for last". (While he's a fan he must not be a diehard as he would know that Elvis wasn't quite done rocking in 1972 as "Promised Land" and "T-R-O-U-B-L-E" were still on the way.) It's great to see Elvis get such prominent and unapologetic notice especially from a writer with a knowledge of rock history and an ear still in the contemporary market

If horror novelist Stephen King is truely an Elvis fan, then where the heck is "Jailhouse Rock", "King Creole", "Heartbreak Hotel", not to mention "Hound Dog" (I mean Stephen King didn't give a horrible list, just woefully incomplete--needs more Leiber & Stoller hits.)

I believe Don't Be Cruel is still his best of the best. It is still as exciting today as it was 51 years ago. But then again, you could make an arguement for best from at least 75 hits of his song repetoire! He is the King of Rock & Roll for a reason!

I agree with Jerry, "Burning Love" is great, "A Big Hunk 'O Love" is the first record I bought, still great today ! But I also like "Promised Land" & T.R.O.U.B.L.E.

I like Promised Land. But I've never cared much for T-R-O-U-B-L-E. Neither one comes close to Burning Love. Big Hunk O' Love is my favorite Elvis '50s rocker.

I happen to be fan of both Kings. On Burning Love I agree with SK... it was his last great rocker, and even one of his best. The two mentioned above are great tunes, but not half as strong as Burning Love.
