The next Madison release has been announced; volume 3 in the "Standing Room Only Tapes" series is entitled "Hillcrest Blues". It contains - for the first time - the complete and unedited March 30, 1972 "mock" session in superb stereo according to the press release. This release has a running time of 73.10 minutes.

One of the changes in 1972, after wife Priscilla left their marriage, was a move back into his empty Hillcrest home in Los Angeles, in early March. Was it any surprise that several of the songs done a few weeks later, at RCA's Studio C in nearby Hollywood, were downcast or bluesy? When MGM's cameras moved in for a one-day "mock" session sequence, Elvis and band rocked it up with "Burning Love" and "Johnny B. Goode," but also showed Presley's true mood with selections like "For The Good Times," "Always On My Mind" and "Separate Ways."
Now, for the very first time, hear the complete, unedited March 30, 1972 "mock" session in superb stereo!

What can be said about a rehersals CD? It's an interesting piece of history. A glimpse of what the song could've been without all the over dubs, etc. A look at Elvis at work, and the making of the music. All a resounding YES. However, I'm going to pass on this one. I can't fault Madison. I guarantee they've put a 100% effort into making this CD package great. It's just the idea of buying something I'll listen to once and only once. I'd rather have a complete, although sometimes mundane, album of finished songs.

Ftd has found a way to make money without really trying via the classic ablums,and it seems to be working,Madison shows time and again what can be done when someone cares enough to put out quality items,now madison hasnt been perfect and have put out a few questionable releases,but overall they have the best quality,i was hopeing for the complete hampton roads concert,i also wish madison would release the rehearsals from july 1970,think of those rehearsals with that great madison artwork,and many fans dont have these rehearsals,and Ftd? dont make me laugh!

This release is basicly 45% "For the good times". 9 takes... I'm sure this will be a top notch product from Madison once again, but I must agree with Lefty, it will be a interesting listen for one or two times only. I will skip this one. I am very happy with FTD's On Tour -The Rehearsals. It is one of their best regular releases because it is very listenable. Unlike the sessions CD's it feels like a new studio album. And I want to support FTD/SonyBMG when they relase more On Tour stuff. But FTD should take notice and beat the bootleggers!!

Indeed, Smile, this is a cd for die-hard fans who like to listen from time to time how a song developed. But so are many of the FTDs. Not for general listening.

Fantastic! I'm definately getting this one. Elvis in the studio is a real eye opener and very enjoyable to me. I love all the studio chatter and song development. Well done Madison ( if only ftd's 'Elvis On Tour- the rehearsals' Cd had been like this ).

and commercial guys. FTD are Commercial guys and than they are Elvis Fans (or whatever)

I now pick and choose my Ftd purchases,a label that lost its vision,and still no reason why they stick there cd's in cheap digipacks with no booklets,again thats not the profile of a collectors cd!

Goes back what we said before: Fans are NOT stupid and have no money to burn...buying those FAR TOO MANY DIFFERENT packages of the same material....This one, Hillcrest Blues and JOAN DEARY TAPES, and then so many other releases that many have put onto the market and that fans have already bought...BMG comes late but not too late. Maybe they learn from mistakes and release soon on FTD digipack vol one & vol2 a RESTORED Elvis at the AMERICAN STUDIOS carrying two CDs on each volume with all outtakes (fab unreleased staff available only today on bootlegs) of those famous Jan and feb 1969 sessions (incl. slow version Stranger i/home Town) Don't you all agree ? Besides, there are so many more priority releases that we await on FTD !! The material is there, they only have to release it and soon before the crisis knocks us all into the next county (to use Elvis's words) And please, only send in your "positive/creative" coments

I am convinced this release is essential,....the sound is taken from multi track tapes and therefore outstandingly good matching FTD quality...what we had was just taken from camera mikes ....for newbies essential in any case...for ardent collectors a great step forwards....

Has anyone listened to this one ? Is there on it the nice comments made by Elvis singing (we should be out here by now) PLUS the superb and extra long guitar work by our dear friend John Wilkinson ??? If so, we'll buy it--just for this shortened version ONLY ...that great, believe us, friends. However, this having said, we stick to our former comments re. the far too many different packages available of such material. It seems only fans with money will buy those...too bad, but for real in these days of crisis Mike. Genedin won't have a problem with it, nor will Japio who, like us ALL is still waiting anxiously for that great 4 or 6 CD Elvis on Tour 72 Box (hopefully with lots of great color prints shot by Bonja, Heist and Keith--hint hint Ernst). We won't give up our Quest for such great material and feel sorry that other labels are faster than FTD, having released Richmond, Hampton, Virginia a.o. C'mon Ernst and Roger, let's give this one PRIORITY !

"It's all gravy" as they used to say ) at this point, folks. Anyway that makes being an Elvis fan still fun in 2008 is fine with me and many fans. I agree the FTD was a nice package and this is another way of looking at that period. Like most of us here, it's all about how much spare cash we have lying around! But with Madison, it's always worth the "gamble." I've never been burned by them.
