Groundbreaking Works Set For November

March 13, 2012 | Other

Memphis' city council recently said "yes" to spend millions on upgrading Elvis Presley Boulevard. The move is expected to boost tourism and quality of life for people living in Whitehaven, specifically between Brooks and Shelby drive. The groundbreaking is set for November. It's a $43 million price tag, but some say the big bucks spent now will reap benefits from tourism, to attracting private developers.

Hopefully they start by taking some of that money and buying up property around there and start bulldozing away the ghetto.

$43million for urban developemnt / generation is nothing - it will fund very little and certainly is drop in the ocean for what the Whitehaven area really needs. It can't and won't won't address the ugliness of the area surrounding Graceland eg closed down pawn shops, petrol stations, fast food restaurants etc, nor the crime nor even basic stuff like trying to cross the road from the the shops/car paking/Heartbreak Hotel to Graceland - there are two crossings (with another further up ear Days Inn), one of which hasn't worked for years. Graceland has been Memphis' primary tourist destination for 30 years, yet the local Governement has allowed so much poory managed development (obviously years before Graceland opened to the public too) the area has become a hell-hole.
