I wonder if the "sold out" set will be a compilation of songs (like "Southern Nights") or two complete shows from that particular tour... Also, did anyone else notice that the son of Buddy Hackett and Merle Hagard was in attendance at the August '69 show ? Damn, I bet that was one ugly kid. lol
Ronaldv wrote on May 15, 2013
It would be nice if the Sold out 2 cd contains 2 unreleased shows from the March and the June 1974 tour....Cisco?
Smile:-) wrote on May 15, 2013
When it comes to unreleased concerts I primarily hope for tours/seasons not yet documented by FTD (or anyone else for that matter): 1970 on tour and/or Houston, summer of 1973, July 1975 and June 26, 1977. (On Tour stuff from 1972 is a safe bet and will eventually come out some day, so I don't count that in). FTD should release the Houston concert from March 1974, btw. It's a special concert. And I hope FTD is going to release a very good soundboard concert from 1971, 1975 or 1976 on VINYL! Elvis don't have have official vinyl releases from those years yet (if we don't count the EAP box-set with the '75 "Dallas" concert).

Sounds very promising. The 1969 lineup is fabulous. The 1974 tours from March and June were very good ones, and although Elvis Concerts were gradually becoming in "auto mode", Elvis stills fairly committed. Way to go Ernest.

Sold Out: Good ! I can finally get a show from the June tour without it coming at the price of another mega-book. The fact that it's 7 incher means that the shows are likely to be better than what FTD have previously put out both technically and artistically. I sure got more out of "3000 South Paradise Road" than what I bargained for. Hot August Night: Again, no problem with their choice of the 25th M/S apart from the fact that this will be Sony/FTD's 8th release from this season. Whats lingering in my mind is what is the legality re it's title ? Which is why I think it's better left for Neil Diamond's classic live album. I personally would tweak it to something like "Hot Summer Night" Anyone out there got an answer?
Dazman wrote on May 15, 2013
I hope FTD eventually come on board with Sony Legacy's 'Aloha' & 'Stax' sets this year with a decent SB from Vegas in August '73 now that they've deleted that dreadful 'Closing Night' CD.
eric c wrote on May 15, 2013
I hope the 2cd set, sold out,are the greensboro and hampton roads concerts from april 1972...san antonio could be another possibility.
Johnny2523 wrote on May 15, 2013
Eric C... Sold out isn't On Tour related material, the info also says its focus is on March&June 1974. So its likely to be A March Show, And A June Show
Johnny2523 wrote on May 15, 2013
Dazman, i heard over the years that most august '73 soundboards, are in bad shape, otherwise they would have.. I don't think closing night is a bad cd it isnt dreadful to me.
Smile:-) wrote on May 15, 2013
I hope for the Houston Astrodome concert, March 1974 released in even better sound quality than on the Madison release:-) For the June tour of the same year I have no preferences. Good tour, but are there any stand out shows? When will "In Concert" be released by FTD? (Original record remastered on one disc + a complete show from the June 1977 tour on disc 2. And bonus tracks of course)
wildfishie wrote on May 15, 2013
Hi Smile, I also long for the day "In Concert" will be released. But I have a different point of view about the track list. I'd rather have the 2 full concerts (omaha and rapid city) with no cuts than have the same format it was originally released. I really don't like those "elvis fans comments", having the complete shows sounds more interesting for me, even knowing that in some parts it wasn't the best of Elvis. I think FTD should always treat their concert releases as history documentation for us fans (no cuts at all). The general public can stick with regular or legacy releases. By the way I have a question, maybe Cisco can give us some light: will FTD ever give us the madison and the aloha shows or should we go for the legacy releases? ;-)
Orion wrote on May 15, 2013
According to Keith Flynn's site, there are several choices for shows from the '74 touring season. Actually more soundboards from this tour are available than I anticipated. As far as Dazman's question concerning the legality of the title "Hot August Night" since Neil Diamond already issued a classic album with that title. From my limited understanding of copyright, and it only comes from having some of my writing published, is that Copyright Law prohibits the copyrighting of titles. Therefore, the CD could be called "Happy Days", "Gone With the Wind," or "Dowtown Abby" and no one could claim infrigment. That's why there are numerous songs with the same title and no one is crying foul.

Great news, I really like the 69 concerts and for many collectors there aren't such a thing as too many concerts from one period, as long as they are in good sound (and FTDs are almost always in good sound), regarding the Sold Out, I hope it is two full concerts ,but I also liked Southern Nights. And 7" with 12-16 page booklets that is really great, this year has been good to us Elvis fans so far. And how good to see that there is a market for the "overpriced" FTD book/cd projects so they can release a reprint or best of the British :) .
Orion wrote on May 15, 2013
This is bit off topic, but has anyone stateside received the May FTD releases ? I haven't received these and yet we're discussing the June releases - which do indeed look promising. Hopefully, the "Sold Out" set doesn't turn out to to be a set we've already had on "import" like the "Kansas City Blues" set that we've had for awhile.
Ronaldv wrote on May 15, 2013
The chance that FTD will release in concert 77 is very small. FTD and mainly EPE are ignoring these concerts for ages. Besides that, we all know what happened to the producers of the great Final Curtain box some time ago....
Smile:-) wrote on May 15, 2013
I don't believe that this is relevant for FTD Ronaldv. We are a "closed circuit" of byers. In my opinion a classic album treatment of "In Concert" will eventually happen as Ernst & co. have defined classic albums as those that Elvis knew of and that were planned during Elvis' lifetime. FTD have already released 1977 concerts. But back to the forthcoming releases, which outstanding concerts do we know of from June 1974? Anyone?
Troubleman wrote on May 15, 2013
Orion – I’m from Canada and last week I was finally able to pre-order the May FTDs (Stay, away Joe and From Elvis in Memphis) so I think they were probably delayed for some reason. Remember that these were originally April releases. Regarding the June releases, I am somewhat disappointed that there is no ‘legacy’ album, only concerts. I don’t mind good concerts, but I think a combination of 1 concert/1 classic album is good. I believe the ‘Elvis in Concert’ album should be the last one released by FTD, once the vaults are empty and all the other ‘classic’ albums have been released. It would make a fitting end to a great collection. - TCB

I did read in an interview given by Ernst that an FTD in concert 77 was on the cards. He went on to say that this release would be much futher in the future and that the recordings were in bad shape needing a lot of money spent on them to restore. As of these latest additions cant wait to have them in my collection.
Ronaldv wrote on May 15, 2013
Sure hope so, but a weak excuse that the recordings are in bad shape? This gives me a loud laugh! I have the Japanese papersleeve edtion of Elvis in concert. Splendid sound.
Biffx wrote on May 15, 2013
I agree Ronaldv i have the Standard cd from years back and that sounds ok to me. I guess at some point down the line it will be released and we can finally add it to our collections.

The Best of British is a great book with lots of interesting information about many of the 50's songs. Highly recommended! Glad to see it has been appreciated enough for a reprint. Looking forward to the June releases, especially the August 1969 CD. I wish FTD release all the stereo live recordings from 1969, 1970, 1972 & 1977 (we already have everything from 1973 & 1974). It is a bit strange how few of the On Tour recordings have been officially released so far. Instead we get lots of soundboard recordings that have far inferior sound quality...
Orion wrote on May 15, 2013
I read the same comments from Ernst regarding EIC. I'm sure he was taking about the condition of the tapes due to the cutting, splicing, and overdubs that Felton did to make the soundtrack presentable. I also recall seeing the notes concerning the reels in Tunzi's Sessions book and the notes reveal bad sound and other problems with some of the tracks. However, I am sure the recordings could be salvaged and made into a nice package on FTD. I recall not too long ago when FTD took the Stax material - esp. ROR - and made three super two CD sets, and as a result the mainstream buying public will soon be getting a three CD covering these sessions.
Dazman wrote on May 16, 2013
Re EJ's comments on the EIC master tapes, they do make sense when you consider the compilations produced through the years that required a 1977 version of 'My Way' [namely Hitstory and Hit's of the '70's] it's been no coincidence that BMG/Sony have used the April 25 performance from Saginaw MI and not the one from Rapid City on June 21 and it's been that way since the 1997 Platinum box set. Re: Vegas SB's from August '73, I wouldn't mind if FTD could only officially release the Aug 20th M/S booth recording with some usable songs from other dates as bonus cuts. It can only be better than the trashed closing show.
Smile:-) wrote on May 16, 2013
Elvis In Concert will be released. I'm sure:-) But back to the new FTD releases! I ask again: which outstanding concerts do we know of from the 1974 June tour? Are there something special we can hope for in your opinion...?
Jamie wrote on May 17, 2013
Hello, come on gang - regarding 'Elvis In Concert', Elvis was literally dying on his feet out there. The present CD stretches the credibility of digital remastering beyond its limit - its been sourced from awful tapes and the sound is deplorable. I think they should tidy it up (eg, eliminate the fans' comments, include an unbroken 2001 introduction), refurbish the sound from 1st generation masters and issue a single CD on BMG/Sony. The whole EIC episode is deeply traumatic, and expanding the CD to include both tragic shows isn't something I consider desirable.
Lefty wrote on May 17, 2013
*Sigh* There is not a lot to be excited about here. Another concert from 1969? Well, that period has been covered to death, and the shows during that era, though amazing, varied little. The whole bit about Gatorade and drinking "wa-wa" and "he's a squirrel" gets on my nerves. As far as the 1974 March and June tours, that is yet to be seen. A two CD set is a hint that at least one of the shows is a revamped bootleg. Just my guess. And as far as EIC goes, I agree with Jamie. Overall, EIC is a tragedy. The thing about the original album, though highly criticized for the way it was put together, is that it does capture the best of what was recorded. There is not much in the way of exciting footage or hidden gems in the unreleased material. Every time I see the EIC footage, I feel sad watching our man flounder on stage. If I were promoting his legacy, I would steer clear of EIC too.

Lefty, I was involved and be assured.. nothing of the 2 cd set is known to exist..all will be new..no cdr, no import, no audio no nothing..dont be so negative..the 69 show is a powehouse performance..and the other shows dont stand behind..just magic performances..
Ronaldv wrote on May 17, 2013
Oops Cisco, you made me very curious now! Maybe the other Houston astrodome show turned up??? That would be the release of the year 2013 for me! Let's wait and see.

Waste of another cd with the 69 release. How many shows of the same do,we need from Vegas 69? Are we hitting the bottom of the barrel here?
harriemuskee wrote on May 17, 2013
How many shows of the same do,we need from Vegas 69 ... Please talk for yourself. You don't have to buy it. There are a lot of people who like the 69 shows. This is fantastic news. A 69 concert from august 25 in a 7'. And Sold Out from the team Frieser/ Slebos that must be something special like 3000 South Paradise Road and Fourty Eight Hours To memphis. I think Ernst has a winning team
Lou A wrote on May 18, 2013
Count me in as one of the people who love the 1969 shows, and I'll be buying this like I did all the others . Yes , there is a sameness to the material. But this isn't Elvis fault . He had to deliver the same songs at each show because he had differant audiences each night, each expecting certain Elvis classics . Also as far as Elvis knew, some shows would be recorded and a live album of performances would be selected from those shows. No one expected all of the shows to be released , but Elvis's untimely death changes all that. I've read in Joe Tunzi's book that Elvis DID rehearse a lot of songs , but pared the set list down so the shows would work better. Still, we do have some unusual material from 69, like Memories, Inherit the wind , Reconsider Baby Etc . And I don't think Elvis ever sounded more enthusiastic - reason enought to release these shows.

FTD, the best label around! One of the best choices for live shows in years. The 2 shows are totally unknown so far, not even the bootleggers tracked them down after all these years. Very nice surprise Ernst & (cis) Co ! This is a winner!

Both releases look good to me. Totally agree with previous comments about the 69 shows. For me Elvis at his best.Yes the shows were similar but as stated no one could have foreseen them being released all these years later. Good idea to package in 7" format. Makes it more value for money.

I have a suggestion to make the team for next ftd vinyl I would like the aloha concert with the original cover, but with a picture of Elvis in the show of hawai in cutting instead of Photo 72. the covers of the 2 new ftd cd are greats !
KidGREEDhead wrote on May 23, 2013
Keep 'em coming Ernst ! By all means, if those are some of the best shows and concerts the King gave then, well, then I'll rush out and buy them also. I only have 165 shows/concerts already in my collection...but always ready to add one more if truly exceptional. In future though, I'd like Ernst, Ansini a.o. to add in between songs more humourous Elvis comments (he made during Vegas & Tahoe) that come from Having fun on stage. Hope they listen/read this valuable recomm.
Jamie wrote on May 27, 2013
Hello, regarding the 1969 show, for many years there was widespread frustration that 'Elvis In Person' was the only document of the Las Vegas comeback performances. Now people are complaining that we are spolit for choice with entire shows from that engagement. Given that Elvis hasn't been able to record any new material since he died in 1977, I think the record company has done just about all it can to meet the incredible demand for unreleased curios from all periods of Elvis's career. Give them a break.
alanfalk wrote on May 27, 2013
Jamie and kidGREEDhead, I agree 1oo% with both of your comments, more humorous remarks and the record company has done a good job giving us lots of Elvis, for me there is not such a thing as too many shows as long as we are not forced to buy, and last time I cheked it was still not mandatory to buy everything that is released.
