Follow That Dream Records - Classic Reissue Releases

January 06, 2005 | Music
Here is the latest update on the Follow That Dream release classic reissue series. The series continues with “Elvis is Back!” (Release Date: March 1, 2005) and “Today” (Release Date: April 1, 2005) 1/6/2005

In addition to its regular quarterly releases of collectors’ material, Follow That Dream Records regularly reissues Elvis movie soundtrack albums and classic Elvis albums that are no longer part of the mainstream Sony/BMG (RCA Records label) catalog. Next in their series of “classic album” reissues are the 1960 album Elvis Is Back! (Release Date: March 1, 2005) and the 1975 album Today (Release Date: April 1, 2005).

FTD Records will release a 2-CD version of Elvis is Back! in the customary 7” format. There is a very limited number of previously unreleased outtakes on the studio albums, hence the 2CD solution – combining all previously released versions – masters and outtakes.

Today will receive the same treatment. Since many of the studio albums have been deleted by SONY/BMG, it’s FTD’s mission to make sure that the material is still available, in order to keep Elvis’s recorded legacy intact.

Following are the track listings for both albums:

What a huge rip-off! We are definitely at the bottom of the barrel now. The majority of these cuts have been released over various Elvis compliations, both FTD and BMG/RCA. You people are really in it for the money. I am very, very disappointed!
JerryNodak wrote on January 06, 2005
While it is true that much of this material has been released before I would hardly characterize it as being at the bottom of the barrel. Further, given the amount of Elvis material released both during his lifetime and since his passing duplication is unavoidable. Personally, I am overjoyed to be getting all of this material in one place AND in the 7 inch format. No one is being ripped off. This material is well known and no one is forcing you to buy it. If you're not interested simply pass on it. As for myself, I can't wait. Thank you, Ernst and company.

'Elvis Is Back' looks a bit of a filler but 'Today' looks very promising. I assume the 'original session mixes' are those Elvis wanted redone and so were sent to New York for re-mixing. To me, at least, it will be good to hear these, although I suppose there is also an argument for saying these kind of things should never be released if Elvis never wanted them to be - same also applies to rehearsals etc... Interesting why these have never seen the light of day before now - these may have been an interesting album in the 80's when RCA was desperate for material. But I will certainly look forward to this in March. Which can't be said for the so called 'regular' release from March 30, 1975, this is really uninspiring and definitely smacks of barrell scraping. Sure, some of the cuts are unusual given the period generally but this is merely an ok show with certainly nothing to get excited about. As for the 'bonus' tracks, well, what can you say about things like Little Darlin thats even remotely positive - nothing. All versions of completely dire and should be filed in a drawer marked 'bin'. Some people will be getting excited about 'You're The Reason I'm Living', don't, it's also a waste of effort, assuming it's the same as/or similar to that on the FB boxset a while ago. Of course I'll buy it but I guarantee it will never be played, not even once...Anyway back to 'Elvis On Tour -The Rehearsals'....for the millionth time!

All I have to say is, "Here! Here! Jerry Nodak." And wait 'til you "hear, hear" to everyone else.

All my christmases have come at once ! the 'T-R-O-U-B-L-E' sessions are one of my favourite and Elvis' most underrated and i'm glad it's all available on one cd - especially in this 7'' format ! the 'elvis is back' is without a doubt going to be gem. I'll be getting the soundboard anyway as i love the king in concert and its from '75 which will complement 'Today'. Jerry Nodak keeps it real.

It's strange that people are so negative to soundboards being released by FTD, and generally positive to bootleg soundboards. I've had my share of soundboards, but I think FTD is doing a good job with their intention - giving us a soundboard from each tour and Vegas/Tahoe engagement. Same goes for Today and Elvis is Back. Instead of complaining we should be glad that new material is still being released, even if some have been released before. I certainly welcome Elvis Is Back and Today - and any other FTD release in the future.

Well would just like to add that every release can't satisfy everyone ! As for me im so glad to get Elvis is Back in the 7" format with booklet and cool cover. I just want to stress though I am waiting patiently on "Roustabout" bieng released in this format, when I have that one at home I will be very very satisfyed . I have always loved this soundtrack and film and the LP cover. With the added new Roustabout title tune included this will be a little gem, So Ernst and co' please please ROUSTABOUT!!!!!!!

Cruiser621 is right. Starting to duplicate within the FTD series shows how we get milked off. Hey Ernst, these releases are still around 20+ €uro. Shame on you, shame on the dealers. With "Today" I'll pay 22 €uro for old stuff, including Outtakes I already paid 22 €uro for when I bought "Sunset Boulevard". They rip us off like even the worst Bootlegger never did. As for me I will not continue to collect this crap. We have to force Ernst and Co. to come back to what the FTD Label realy was: A source of collector's items. Not a way to re-re-re-release old stuff like in the 80s.

I know that most of Elvis' fans already have these albums; even I have all the previously released outtakes from Elvis is Back!, but there are songs from Today that I haven't heard yet (I'm a relatively new Elvis fan), so I'm glad these albums are released. There is simple solution for those of you who already own them: don't buy the new albums! It's a pity that there are no more unreleased takes from Today, sice this is one of my favourites sessions. We need the Stax albums released this way!!. And, about the soundboard, I've never liked much the bonus live songs (although I prefer to have them than not), and this release have a lot of them; semms the actual show is a bit short.

Will i am very glad to see they doing the right thing, people should be happy what ftd is doing, i now i am. i was going to do this myself putting these albums with out-takes on them, but now i dont have to do this. Elvis is back and Elvis Today is going to be great albums into my collection, and even 2 cd set. this way i dont have to buy every rca and ftd cds to get these out-takes. i just get these delete series albums and the concert cds. way to go ftd keep up the good work i am very happy what you are doing, and kepping Elvis music live and well.

This could have been the way to release the handful of missing takes from the Today-Sessions. Many releases and nothing complete. Like always. Even if the missing takes are not complete..What the heck? THIS IS A COLLECTOR's SERIES. Come on Ernst. Want to keep some last jewels in your living-room?

both albums are not favourites of mine , sony has it right here they are very boring albums and though elvis is back went ok it should have done better esp as he had just come from the army . i think it was the photo on the album that turned a lot of girls off . a fat elvis and terrible cardigan and backdrop . the music is ordinary except for fever . as for the other album i remember at the time it was release no one bought it and from elvis now and until is death most of the music didnt work . elvis could have done a lot better but considering the health he was in and what he was taking this is the result

Outstanding Ernst. This is what fans have been wanting for a long time. Elvis is Back is one of the greatest sessions for Elvis. The original session mixes for Elvis Today will be wonderful. It just does not get any better than this. As for Roustabout, they do not have the outtakes. Rob I'm sure they will come up with something but with outtakes missing on Roustabout, Girls Girls Girls and some of the others, we might not see anything so spectacular as this here. Santa Claus get rid of that funky red suit and come and enjoy the great talent of Elvis Presley. For me Christmas looks to be coming early this year.

Lyle , thats not goos news , aww well just to get Roustabout in this format i would be happy with , looks like i shall have to make my own cd for now then .

The march session of 1960, for me that's Elvis at the peak of his vocal power. His voice was never better. It was 1960 and Elvis knew Rock and Roll was no longer THE thing in music. Doing so he gave us songs that the whole world that had the chance to listen to radio or records could sing along and made him famous world wide. For a lot of people these songs are Elvis. But he also made sure there was still something for the rock and roll fan to enjoy, just listen to "such a night" "make me know it" " stuck on you" In fact he gave us a lot of differend things, a new Elvis that proved he could sing anything he wanted.I always liked Elvis because he could just sing anything he wanted, i just wished he had done more sessions like that and not only movie soundtracks. Once again RCA goofed because " Elvis is back" should have been a much bigger seller if they had put" it's now or never " and " stuck on you" on it. But non of the singles they released from that session was on LP. As for the "today" album, Elvis had trouble recording new things when that album was made he dit not like to go the the studio because of the songs they gave him to record . But the session had Elvis in good voice and spirid so at that time to me this album togheter with "Promised land" afther From Elvis in Memphis , TTWII, Vegas to Memphis and Elvis Country gave us a nice Elvis LP. FTD is great for fans but as i wrote before since 1999 we had more than 40 CDs on the label an average of 8 a year. Surely that together with normal releases is a lot of CD, not to mention books DVDs and i can go on and on.....

Elvis is Back as if one cd wasn't enough now we get two. oh my, this is for me the most fantastic release on ftd yet

Ok, for the firts time ever, i will pass a ftd cd. This is really sad. Elvis Today will be great, as it wasn't upgraded a few years ago. But Elvis Is Back is really, really a dissappointment. This cd was upgraded in 1999 and now again, in a hurry! Because BMG will re-release it also as part of their new re-issue program, which is also a dissapointment. I bought al those albums at the end of last century and now they are releasing the same stuff again. By the way, I will pass the Love Elvis release also. I know, i don't have to buy everything etc etc...but this is milking the cow again!

Ernst is reading my mind! All of a sudden there are streams of CD's that I've wished for so long! Ernst & Roger are the best thing ever happened to us and Elvis' legacy! Keep 'em coming guys! Happy birthday Elvis!

The thing that i find really disappointing here is that new fans won't be able to go to the vast majority of shops and browse through the racks choosing their next classic album to buy. I'm all for these special editions, but the regular editions should also be available - with two LPs on one CD - for £10 so that even teenagers or those on low wages can afford to buy them if they want to.
