Quite a tricky question for the Wienerworld Quiz. Joel Whitburn's "Billboard Book of USA Top 40 Hits" shows Elvis had 4 No. 1's each for the years 1956 and 1957. But that's counting "Don't Be Cruel/Hound Dog" as 1 single (11 weeks). If one takes these two songs as separate singles than the answer - with 5 Top No. 1's - is.....

This is a no brainer. 1956 was Elvis' year just as 1964 was The Beatles' year. As we have seen, deciding what is and what is not a no.1 is very subjective and arbitrary. It is mainly used by record companies and managers to hype up their performers for even greater marketing strategies. Joel Whitburn is not the Holy Bible or Moses on no. 1 records. He is not some "expert" or God's law giver. He gives his opinion or take on no. 1s just like I am doing now. But just go by the 1987 RCA album THE NUMBER ONE HITS where all of Elvis' no. 1s in the USA are listed. Duh! It is so obvious but these "experts" make such a mess of it.
