Elvis Week On American Idol

My DVR is now set for 'record'. Hope they do the KING justice.

they usually always do. im glad they keep elvis week on idol. i wonder if they have anything special planned for elvis.

I wish they'd do an Elvis week on the UK version of American Idol. I'd watch it for sure!

Always a positive thing. Still watched by millions and mostly young people. Probably the best way to expose Elvis music to them Lord knows the radio doesn't.

I have to agree with Steve V in that this is the way some young people will be exposed to the King. And some oh them may check him out further. Some people on this site think they can proselytize the young people into liking the King. It's more likely the young will like Elvis if they discover him by accident on their own. A.I .may be that forum.

I love the fact that Elvis always seems to be involved in Amercian Idol. This show has a mass audience and that type of exposure can always help. And besides, Elvis is the ULTIMATE IDOL of all-time.

I just watched this show and no one blew me away. Some very odd song selections..."Lawdy Miss Clawdy"(not really an Elvis song and a much different arrangement than Elvis used), "Saved" and "Baby, What You Want Me To Do"??? (all were fair to mediocre) There was a sleepy version of "Can't Help Falling In Love", a horrible version of "In The Ghetto", a bad version of "Blue Suede Shoes", a pleasant, but uneven "Suspicious Minds" and a dreary "crooning" version of "Hound Dog". The highlight was an acoustic version of "Little Less Conversation" by Lee.

I agree - not good & strange song choices for sure. Elvis week a few years ago was much better.

Not strange song choices at all. Most are on the forthcoming 'Viva Elvis' CD. Great early publicity, albeit the viewing public will not be aware of this.

I actually liked the song choices, not your typical Elvis top 10. Shows he had a lot of blues in him. As for the performances, well. Where is Taylor Hicks when you need him, lol.

I thought Crystal was fantastic with her version of Saved. Lee Rocked the house with A Little Less conversation, and I thought Big Mike did a nice version of Ghetto. As for the rest, well not much to brag about.......PEACE

I thought many song choices showed lack of knowledge. Why not go for something from 69-recordings (except SM). Or perhaps something from the 70's?!? SO much more contemporary, I would say. I was hoping for songs like you gave me aa mountain, bridge, american tril, what now my love, my boy, kentucky rain, let it be me, see see rider. There's so many nice contemporary songs out there. Why go for blue suade shoes!?! Don't get it...

Yeah, I was little disappointed with the show and the selection of some songs. I think the pressure is probably tremendous. They're told they should jazz it- up, but, at the same time be themselves, and don't do a karaoke type thing . This has got be very difficult, especially when you're covering Elvis song's. While viewing them sing, one can't help but visualize the King, and that makes the contestant come over as flat. Oh well, two will be voted off tonight. Kind of sad really.

Not too many jumpsuit's I hope. Yes it would be nice to see a tribute show on the UK version.... mmmm,maybe not,can you imagine the jumpsuit's coming out everywhere.

Really ekravik , Bridge? You wanted them to sing a song totally identified with Simon & Garfunkel? Mountain, MY Boy, What Now My Love? You want Elvis to become more uncool to the younger generation and reinforce the jumpsuit image? This is a young persons show, those songs would show Elvis as a MOR singer only. The song choices were mostly fine (Saved & Baby WHat You Want Me to Do were a stretch as Elvis songs), but the performances were not except for a few. They must have viewed a tape of the 68 Special.

This is very much about song choice. Here in Denmark it was terrible because the producers didn´t know very much about Elvis´s catalogue. Just chose the most viewed from YouTube obviously, so two teenage boys were told to sing "Can´t help...." and "Always on...", and it was a terrible experience for everybody including the boys. Otherwise it´s great for Elvis and his songs. And us, of course.

I thought the show should have had a segment focusing on the King & his accomplishments. Sadly it didn't. The medley sung by the contestants ( sorry I can't bring myself to calling them idols) during the results show was dreadful.

The American Idol 'Elvis' Week was watched by 20.639 million people. Now that has to be good news for Elvis.

I agree 100 % with ekravik and think that the argument he makes is obvious: To many young people the Elvis of the 50s is dated and interesting only for historic reasons. It's the Elvis of 68-77 (especially 68-73) that is cool. I don't know how many times I've heard comments like "didn't know that he did these kind of songs" or "didn't know that he looked so cool" while playing cds and dvds from the 70s. And Elvis fans agree that this is when he peaked: 15 of the top 20 songs are from post 67. It's not wize that these excellent songs remain mostly unknown to the public at large.

I have to agree with the old scudder on the medley performed on the results show...It was beyond bad. They combined "Burning Love", "Teddy Bear", "Return To Sender" and "Viva Las Vegas" with an uninspired and sappy arrangement and the vocals by most of the "idols" were very poor.
