Elvis Haircut Day

February 26, 2009 | Other

The Fort Chaffee Redevelopment Authority will celebrate the 51st anniversary of Elvis Presley getting his Army haircut March 25. Presley got his buzz cut in 1958, and the son of barber James B. Peterson, who did the deed, is scheduled to be on hand for the celebration. The event will be at the Fort Chaffee Barber Shop Museum, building 803, where Presley was subjected to the shearing. Also scheduled to appear is a photographer who took pictures of Presley getting his hair cut and a television reporter who interviewed Presley at Fort Chaffee.

The museum contains a replicated barber shop with authentic items from the period along with some Elvis memorabilia.

it's just another excuse to celebrate and drink quite a few beers..

What is wrong with celebrating & drinking a few beers? Few glasses of wine? Few mixers?

It sounds funny that a haircut is cause for a celebration. What's next, an anniversary celebration of when Elvis had some dental work done? lol.

Of course it sounds infantile to celebrate that occasion. On the other hand the haircut was a special event that went all over the world up till now. Yet, if this is the first time ever they celebrate this it is even more infantile.

It is hard to believe today that the haircut is a big thing, but back then this was a huge news story for the the reason that Elvis's hair and sideburns were going to be shaved off. I guess what I am saying is you have to put it into the time frame that it happened to appreciate what the haircut meant.
