Elvis At #8

April 06, 2010 | Other

Madonna has overtaken the Beatles as Britain's most played musician of the last decade, beating the long-standing front-runners into second place, a study published on Monday found.

Between now and the year 2000, no other musician or band has been heard more often on radio and television or in pubs, clubs and shops, the study by music licensing body PPL found.

Robbie Williams came in third, two places above his former band Take That. Queen came in at number four and the sixth spot went to the Sugababes, followed by Elton John, Elvis Presley is #8 followed by Abba and Coldplay. The Rolling Stones were listed at number 19.

Good to see Elvis at number 8. For those who wish Elvis was higher id say take this with a pinch of salt. Beatles are a great band and obviously the british will love them. The Rolling Stones deserve higher and the Sugababes/Take That are contemporary "musicians" so obviously going to be up there.

Actually all this article proves is the preference of DJ's in the UK. Elvis is still the most played non UK artist and Madonna the most played non UK female artist. The Beatles are the most played UK group and Abba the most played non UK group.

I think it is quite a compliment to Elvis' lasting appeal and talent that he is 8th. Consider the facts; 1) He never toured Britain; 2) He never filmed a movie in Britain; and 3) he has been dead since 1977. It sure is an eclectic group though...Abba 9th? really???

I went into a shop on the weekend that is owned by indians and they were listening to BBC asia that plays asian bollywood songs and pop. How happy was I when blue suede shoes suddenly came on! Elvis just appeals to everyone - still!

Is this ranking affected by performances of Elvis songs on karaoke? Cos I may have helped him a bit there over the years... ;)

A good result for someone who hasn't been around for over 30 years. It shows the esteem Elvis is still regarded in. But most of all the standard of excellence his recordings were. Can't say this for Madonna, Elton John and Sugababes.

Of course you cant say that about Madonna & Elton John. They arent dead yet! Ridiculous statement as usual from the fanatics. I have news for you. Elton John currently has written 2 hit shows running on Broadway, has sold millions of records & still sells out MSG every time he plays. Whether you like them or not, you cant say how they will be remembered 30 yrs after death. No one can predict that. The Beatles went kaput in 1970 and I think they have held up pretty well since, dont you?

Good to see that Elvis is still in the running. Courtesy in many ways of the oldies radio stations, which there are many off in the UK.
