Elvis And Fashion

September 29, 2004 | Other
There was a FOX network special in the US on Sunday that featured Rock Fashion. Elvis was shown performing "Hound Dog" on the September 9, 1956 Ed Sullivan Show. The announcer stated how Elvis had revolutionized rock fashions with his "peg slacks, sideburns, hillbilly pompadour". The Elvis segment was shown last so it was regarded as the most important revolution in rock fashion.

And it was back to the 1960s at Milan fashion week on Tuesday as Pucci returned to its hippie roots and Dolce & Gabbana got the catwalk all shook up with an Elvis-inspired show.

D&G used Elvis Presley's granddaughter as one of their models last season and while she was absent from the spring/summer 2005 show, the King himself stared out from cropped gray T-shirts.

The design duo joined Elvis on the set of his 1961 film "Blue Hawaii," wrapping models in bright red Hawaiian prints and stamping tropical flowers and birds on their trademark denim.

Elvis did so much for rock fashion. No question he was the coolest dresser in rock and roll. He also had a look and style that was the coolest. When it came to style, no one could touch Elvis. Even Liberace and Little Richard were overshadowed by Elvis. No one, and I mean no one, could top Elvis' white jumpsuits with cape in the 1970s! Elvis was the flashiest, whether it was the prison outfit in Jailhouse Rock or the hoodlum outfit in King Creole to the GI chic of GI Blues or the Hawaiian look to the black leather jacket of the biker in Roustabout, Elvis was always the King of rock fashion. We can see the Elvis influence on rockers like The Clash who styled their look and clothes on Elvis. Queen's Freddy Mercury also did an Elvis take-off for "Crazy Little Thing Called love." John Lennon did an Elvis take-off at the Madison Square Garden concert in 1972 when he sang "Hound Dog". There is no question that Elvis influenced rock fashion the most.

Non Elvis people and the press in general delight in ridiculing the flashy jump-suits from the seventies, but he will always be the only person who could get away with it. No argument!
