The Memphis Business Journal and the Times of London ran the Elvis airport story recently. Even here in Irelandtoo we knew about the Elvis shop at the Memphis International Airport having been in it back in August 2003. The proposal for an Elvis Presley airport is currently on google.com, Elvis news.

buyep01, just a little opportunism:-) The Elvis Airport story has been going since 2001, when I first suggested it to the Memphis Business Journal, which ran the story and started a furore in Memphis! Even in Irelandtoo we knew about the Elvis shop at the airport, already.

Lest Elvis fans worldwide begin getting their hopes up (again) that the powers that be will change the name of Memphis International Airport to any form of name honoring Elvis A. Presley, let me give you a 99.999% assurance it is NEVER going to happen! Fans can petition the city and the airport board and take credit for starting "movements," but these are simply exercises in frustration. Having been a member of the Memphis Airport Commission for years; having been the aviation writer covering that beat for 26 years; and knowing most of the members of the current MAC . . . naming the MEM airport for Elvis would be contradictory to every goal the commission has strived for (and succeeded in) these past 42 years since the "new" airport opened -- to create an image that Memphis is an "international" crossroads. And it is. Home-based Federal Express makes the MEM airport the busiest cargo airport in the world. 100s of companies with international distribution have moved to MEM to be near this "transport" hub. Having a new "Elvis" shop in the MEM International Airport is a bonus. It's location is great and generates a lot of foot traffic into the store. MEMPHIS has the Elvis Presley Memorial Trauma Center (and I served on the board that founded that hospital and later served as its first fund raiser). It has a major thoroughfare named Elvis Presley Boulevard. I can tell you there is NO sentiment whatsoever among the MAC members to change the name of the airport to anything other than what it already is.

Bill, then it seems the guy on the "Memphis Business Journal" is wasting his time:-)"The Times" and "USA Today", and the British "News of the world" also. WMC-TV5 and Memphis radio stations. The Publicity for an Elvis Airport grows every year now! It made the headlnes here in Ireland too. Never say Never Again:-)Even Larry Cox responded again. seems he feels he has to. LOL.
