Ben Weisman Update

April 18, 2007 | People
Recently we reported that Ben Weisman was in hospital. From his family we received this update: "Seems prayers might be working. When we ask him to look at us, he does. Not sure yet if we he knows us or not. But doctors say he seems more responsive ... So please pray for this miracle to happen."

Several is an understatment. More like 57 starting in 1956 and thru the 70's. Not all were gems (there were many soundtrack songs) but some are absolute Elvis classics.

Yeah he wrote some really good sonds (wouldn't call them most of them classics though) and some real cr*p as well. These are the tracks he (co-)wrote for Elvis: All I Needed Was The Rain, Almost, Almost Always True, As Long As I Have You, Beyond The Bend, Change Of Habit, Chesay, Cindy, Cindy, Clambake, Crawfish, Cross My Heart And Hope To Die, Danny, A Dog's Life, Dominic (OUCH!), Don't Ask Me Why, Don't Leave Me Now, Do The Clam, Easy Come, Easy Go, Fame And Fortune, First In Line, Follow That Dream, Forget Me Never, Frankie And Johnny, Fun In Acapulco, Got A Lot O' Living To Do, Happy Ending, Hard Luck, Have A Happy, He's Your Uncle, Not Your Dad, How Can You Lose What You Never Had, I Got Lucky, I'll Be Back, I'll Never Know, In My Way, I Slipped, I Stumbled, I Fell, It Feels So Right, It's Carnival Time, It Won't Be Long, Let Us Pray, Moonlight Swim, Pocketful Of Rainbow, Ridin' The Rainbow, Rock-A-Hula Baby, Rubberneckin', Signs Of Zodiac, Slowly But Surely, Spinout, Stay Away Joe, Steppin' Out Of Line, Summer Kisses, Winter Tears, There's So Much World To See, This Is Living, Twenty Days And Twenty Night, We Call On Him, Who Are You & Wooden Heart.

Mark S - I said some were classics, not most. Some of the classics you list are - First In Line, Dont Ask Me Why, Follow That Dream, Got A Lot Of Livin To Do, Dont Leave Me Now, It Feels So Right, Rubberneckin, you get the idea. You also list the crap. Heading the list those 2 songs with Clam in the title. Amazing disparity.

Steve V - I got that! We're on the same page here. Plus there's certainly a difference between "classic" and a (in my opinion) good song. While Wooden Heart can be called a classic merely by its sales alone, I really don’t think it is that good a song. A track like Slowly But Surely can hardly be called "classic”, but I think the quality of the song itself is much better…

In all fairness Ben did what was asked of him as a jobbing writer i.e. submit songs for a given story line. Some songs were excellent others were mediocre but a few were dire. Lets face it if the mandate was to write sub standered songs for equally poor films he was an over achiever in many cases
