An American Trilogy - Las Vegas Concert Recordings

February 21, 2007 | Music
Due for release on the Follow That Dream label on April 1, 2007 is the CD "An American Trilogy"with Las Vegas Concert Recordings from the January/February 1972 Engagement.

This quarter's regular 5” digipack release covers Elvis’ engagement at The Las Vegas Hilton in January-February, 1972. RCA did not record entire shows, and several of the new songs Elvis had added to his shows were only recorded once. The consequence is that the main body of the CD – the RCA recordings – feature several previously released versions. Soundboard (informal) recordings of other song performances during the envagement were added to the end of the disc in order to make this as representative as possible of Elvis’ repertoire at that time.

Great News! What a spring we Elvis fans will have.

I wonder if "Never been to Spain" will be the 'master' version or the one that was released on the '70's box set?! The 'master' version is still only available on the bootleg "The legend lives on" and "From Burbank to Vegas". Looks like the message board on elvis-collectors.com has been closed down!?

Looks like a great release. In addition, these four Feb '72 tracks were released on "Writing for the King" last year: # Never Been to Spain (1972/02/14 Midnight show) # Love Me (1972/02/14 Midnight show) # Teddy Bear (1972/02/14 Midnight show) # Don't Be Cruel (1972/02/14 Midnight show) # A Big Hunk o' Love (1972/02/14 Midnight show)

Hmm obviously here incomplete shows makes it pretty difficult to give us a whole 'new and unreleased CD' pity as 50% will have been heard before-thankfully they have a lot of the 15th Feb M/S unreleased here and few unheard versions of songs from 14th M/S. Given the lack of complete show i guess this is as good as we could expect and i look forward to this one because half i havn't heard at all and the rest fleshes out the release like a full concert with bonus tracks-should be another great release!

Multi track recordings from '72. Some unreleased. Release padded with soundboard recordings. Hmmm. I'll probably buy this one someday.

There are only five previously released tracks here, folks. That's not bad going. If it was a classic albums series release you would be getting at least ten previously released tracks in order to get unreleased ones - and you'd still buy it. I'm assuming there is a lot of dialogue featured under "It's Impossible" - I don't fancy an extended version of that song, I have to say!

The other 'interesting' thing i'm noticing about Vegas concert recordings is the FTD running time...look how often we get it running for 64 minutes!!! certainly consistant running time to expect!
Tony D. wrote on February 22, 2007
You can't make a concert longer than it originally was!!?? Some of Elvis' shows were barely 50 minutes in lenght! The guys at FTD always include bonus tracks to boost the playing time, but they can't be expected to make every cd last for exactly 80 minutes!

The soundboard tracks are in better sound than that we have in the bootleg Opening Night '72?

Can't go wrong with this ! Early 1972 Elvis still good.

Yes its quite obvious that very similat to 'POLK SALAD ANNIE ' and on that release getting as much as possible of the 15th Feb M/S once again we are getting as much as possible that is 'new from 15th Feb 1972 M/S! proof being that we get all up to when tape recorder was 'stopped' and the recorder was obviously started again for An American Trilogy-thus 12 out of maybe 16 tracks that show WERE RECORDED! Quite simply we cannot get better than that, ok sessions 3 DOES indicate parts of 'help me make it through the night' were also recorded this season but whether we get to hear these 'parts' is uncertain.Fleshing out with ALL other different tracks-albeit heard before makes a tremendous release from this season-until now forever had been partially represented! I thoroughly support and recommend this release! Renan- how did you hear that the 26.1.72 tracks will be in better sound? certainly this would be most welcome!

Finally we'll get a 'complete' show from february 1972,most likely in very good sound quality. The cover is simple, but tasteful. I will buy this definitely. Elvis was in great form during this Vegas stand and it's always great to get some unreleased multi-track live recordings, especially from an engagement like this. Otherwise,it's quite surprising that Felton recorded 'Also Sprach Zarathustra'. I don't think he thought then that RCA will release it. They wanted to release only a few 'new' tracks and not a complete show. It's a shame that they didn't record at least a few complete shows in that february. Just to save a few bucks. They were sooooooo cheapskate.... And stupid, too.

I agree FLY TROUBLE..i think it was David Briggs said about RCA -that they were the cheapest label ever for re-using tapes etc, well just think how much now they would be worth if heaps MORE tracks had been recorded in multi-track!!why they didn't even get common songs like 'help me make it through the night' from this season in multi-track, what a real shame!
