Upgrade ElvisNews

January 21, 2021 | Other

Yes, you noticed it well: there are some changes on the site. The looks did not change that much, just some touches to make it more consequent and a bit easier on the eye. The biggest change is the software it is running on. That is totally rewritten in the newest  standards. The old software was almost 18 years old, got some upgrades on the way, but basically it stayed the same. With this new software we can go ahead for a few years. It is more secure, with the downside that you have to reset your password probably. As long as you know the email you used (and still use that), that should be no problem. If not, you have to resubscribe.

We dropped some functionality, like the difference between news and articles: it’s one pile now. Another thing that didn’t make it into the new version is the messaging between members, since that was hardly used anymore. Don’t start crying now, since there are some additions to. The biggest is the result of a project started more than a decade ago.

The SongBase (now just ‘songs’) is extended with a lot of data and relations. You can now find which musicians played on the first recorded release of a song. You can follow links and find all recordings they played on. The same goes for songwriters. The amount of work this brought was a challenge at first, but became a burden rapidly. Anyway, it was finished late December 2020 and immediately the urge came to bring it out in the open. Patching the site was an option, but since it already was wonder it still was functioning like it did, the decision was made to start a new project: ElvisNews2021 (really the name of the software!). A two (and a half) week vacation was taken et voilà… the result!

Hopefully we tested enough and everything does work like planned. Even more pleasant would be if you like the result that we are pretty proud of!

You did an amazing job; in only 2,5 weeks you did this all alone. It's beautiful!

Thanks, there were a few minor bugs that are solved now (I think). If anyone finds something that isn't working like expected, please let us know!

Thanks for the refresh, it looks great. Viewing this site has been part of my daily routine for years now and I'm so glad that you felt it was important enough to give it a revamp...TBC!

Congratulations! I like the new layout. I must admit that yellowish/écru theme from the very beginning would be my all-time favourite ;-)

Great job, looks great!

Just one small detail, would it be possible to post the most recent comments on top instead of the old comments?
Lex wrote on January 24, 2021
The sortorder has been changed 3 times during development ;-). Wasn't sure myself which is the best way, this feels more natural, but especially with longer threads from new to old might be better.

Thank you for considering my suggestion. Keep up the good work!

How come the 'remember me' (concerning password I suppose) doesn't work?
Lex wrote on January 24, 2021
Noticed it myself. Looking for a solution... Probably it is a safety issue. Did extend the session time.

Thank you Lex for the new design and the continued work you put into this site. I think the new look works well.

Hello. For a long time now I have tried to give a coment on this site but it hasn't worked all the time, but now it's no problem anymore. Good work and a great site. I want say that I am so glad what is possible now in the Elvis World compared to the late 80s. Not everything is perfect but given the fact that the music we love is between 43 and 63 years old and how fast paced the music world today is it is fascinating that there is so much life in the ELVIS world. I'm proud to be a part of it.
