Sessions From Clambake

By ElvisNews.com/ Lex, July 21, 2019 | Music

After Harum Scarum Victrola shoots at another soundtrack and again of one Elvis’ lesser popular movies: Clambake. Is the 3CD worth buying?

Design

The 3 panel fold-out is decorated with memorabilia behind the CD: stills, labels, Top 40, posters etc. The CDs have a different pose of Elvis in his rich boy suit with cowboy hat.

Content

Not being the best movie he ever made, Clambake turned out to have a pretty decent soundtrack. The movie songs didn’t exactly take care of that (although there are worse), but the strong bonus tracks. Victrola gathered all versions they could find on 3 CDs and added some extras like demos sung by Glen Campbell, U.S. Male, Mine, the remake of You Don’t Know me and some home recordings. Most annoying were some pretty long trailers and commercials for the movie.

All together the set is pretty listenable. The poor movie songs are easily forgotten because of strong songs like Guitar Man, Big Boss Man and Hi-Heel Sneakers.

Too bad that the guys (or gals) behind Victrola once again showed their love for the highs. Sometimes it is that bad that checked my speaker cables, because I heard distortion. I understand the source is sometimes poor, but please do not emphasize that.

Conclusion

A gadget, for those who want to have all, but one most will be able to survive without.

Depending on the amount of material available I might consider buying a 3 cd "Clambake" sessions set from FTD, if they release same on down the road. But I'm not buying from these birds.

Spot on JerryNodak with FTD now starting a new season of whole sessions, I’m sure this session will pop up in due course. I would rather wait and support the excellent official team than Victrola.

I agree that this would be a terrific FTD 3-CD release. Of the later soundtracks I enjoy the music from Clambake. A full session release of this would be great.
