Finally. Now the Classic Series will be complete. The TV shows will be interestingly released on CD; at least The Milton Berle & Steve Allen Shows.

Not a "real" classic lp, simply because it is a compilation, and the bonus material is thrown together without any context. The live/tv-material, i mean, why is it here? There is absolutely no context with the lp, the sound is crap and it has been released a million times already. The homerecordings, ok, i don't give a damn about them, but i know other fans do, so it's ok, and makes at least a little bit of sense here because they are from the period the album was released, but why not the complete tapes? Well, we all know the answer, they can release the other songs on another release. I don't need this compilation to see my collection of "classics" as a complete one, so i will skip this release.

Wow, weird compilation. Whats that saying - Be careful what you wish for?

I'm not going to rush into buying this release. I'll want to read some comments about the overall sound quality. IE: Has there been any improvement from what we already have.

As to sound quality, the one song on this LP that needed a revamp aka cleaning up to get rid of the hiss or distortion is "Shake, Rattle & Roll", the original released version and to be blunt, that's because of the double tracking of Elvis & Bill Black's vocals in counterpoint. If they were to use the unreleased and original version without the additional vocals by Presley and Black it is a very acceptable song. (I believe it's take 12, the unedited, undubbed version which is included on the FTD CD version "Elvis Presley"). Keep in mind this LP was released back in 1959 to keep Elvis' name in the public; nothing more, nothing less.

atomic powered I wonder what kind of Elvis fan you are. Up to this day I haven't read yet a good review from you, neither for a Disc, nor a song, whatever the subject be. Even more than that, I wonder why you register on the website daily, so we cannot track your your writings... Of course you don't have to like anything Elvis is involved in, I don't do it and I dare to say that none of us, but with your undeniable knowledge of the matter, I wonder if there isn't a thing that you positively like. Anyway, for me FOR LP FANS ONLY belongs to the classic albums series, so I'll get it. For sure there is nothing new, very hard to be forty years after he passed away. Wonderful cover, wonderful songs, though we have listened them thounsands of times.

You're wrong, i like a lot of elvis material. Almost everything from the 50's and 60's (at least beside the soundtracks - not saying that there isn't good material on the soundtracks) and i also love at least some material from the 70's, even if almost all of the recordings he made in the 70's are showing an alarming shortcoming of artistic ambition. I also like the songs / recordings on this particular album, don't get me wrong here, but i prefer listening to the songs on this record in there original context. And we already have the lmt and sun material covered on ftd - including all the outtakes that survived. I don't count a compilation like this as an essential lp, and personal, i don't care for the homerecordings, because i never ever listen to unrehearsed material in terrible sound. Honestly, there is so much great music out there, old and new, I'm not going to waste my time on terrible sounding material like this. You can find those recordings interesting and see them as an essential album to be covered by ftd, and that's fine with me and i really understand why another fan can see it that way, but i think there is nothing wrong with my point either, my point should be at least understandable. I don't criticise everything here on this site, that's a fact. Today i praised the coming home recording (5 stars)and called the sfe-lp underrated -that's only one example. There are a lot of other examples, CDs that i liked, songs that i liked or even love, and where i wrote about it. What i criticise are mostly posthum released songs, unfinished, unrehearsed stuff, concerts where elvis is singing 3/4 of the show on autopilot etc. That doesn't mean that i criticise elvis for unfinished songs, jams whatsoever, he never released that material, it wasn't intended to be released. But, at zhe end of the day, a bad recording is a bad recording. Period. If you don't want it to be judged, dont release it, don't ask for our opinions on this side. It's also a natural thing to write about new releases, like the ftds, and you don't need to be a person who is very negativ to find a lot of these releases unconvincing. I'm really not the only one who sees the flaws, the mistakes, the lack of care, the absence of logical concepts when it comes to this releases. Not on all of them, but come on, you can't denie the flwas, or can you? It's also no suprise that the quality of new material from elvis is not getting better. So its also no suprise that there are more releases that contains nothing new or nothing good. That's not something i criticise elvis for, but a release without relevance or good music isn't great. I'm not sure why it makes one a bad fan if he don't won't to buy the same stuff, that wasn't essential in the first place (like 08/15 soundboards or not too interesting outtakes), again and again. And why shouldn't he write about that. I mean, i dont criticise eib or feim here, we are usually talking about the 55 or whatever soundboard from a period where elvis wasn't in his best shape vocaly, outtakes that aren't better than the masters or different from what we already have or crappy, bad produces movie-tunes. I mean, come on. one last point: I truly believe that the fans who praise almost everything, well, that they don't do elvis justice. They denie the differences between the great stuff, the good stuff and the crap. They put all this material on one level with there post, there reviews, there comments. And that shows not only that they have absolut no real interest in music, but only in a "perfect star", it also is - and that is something the people who are praising every thoughtless thrown together lp of leftovers etc etc - at the end of the day devaluing his great stuff. I know my english isn't exactly great, but i hope i could explain my pov.

I'm looking forward to getting this one! Now the only 'classic albums' to be issued on the FTD label are... Elvis In Concert, Aloha From Hawaii, and Madison Square Garden.

I saw an interview on youtube that ernst gave in norway last year. I couldn't understand the questions, but the answers (unlike the questions in danish) and he said that lisa (if i remember that right) don't want material from in concert to be released. So its very unlikely, that we get a classic of that stuff. Personally, i wouldn't miss it. 1)it's released after his passing, 2) I think it's sad and absolutely unlistenable for several reasons.
Mike.S. wrote on November 11, 2018
That's correct, the release of Elvis in Concert is not allowed by Lisa, but Ernst talked about Aloha and Madison Square Garden. Since Ernst is obviously trying to include all important 50s recordings in the classic album series, there might also be a release of the 1976 "Sun sessions" album, including the first two CDs from "A boy from Tupelo". Then only Vegas 56/Little Rock/The Ed Sullivan Shows are missing, we will see, how he handles that subject. Since partly released on the "Too much monkey business" LP, the 1982/83 "I was the one + Elvis Medley" LPs may have a solid chance for release as well.

Thanks for you long answer, atomic powered, which I liked it, though I don't agree with all the things you wrote. Anyway, it doesn't matter, because anyone of us could (and may should) have his/her own points of view. At the same time I'd like to thanks Lex for making this website open to us, so we can freely express ourselves about Elvis, songs, CDs, books, etc. For me (I insist, FOR ME) this FOR LP FANS ONLY release is a must because: 1) It marks the first time that four SUN cuts are released in such format (7" cover of classic albums) 2) The wonderful cover (one of the best of Elvis' entire carrer) 3) And (most of all) I've bought each and everyone of this 7" classic album releases And, finally, I agree with you when you say "I truly believe that the fans who praise almost everything ... they don't do elvis justice". Er... Excuse me everybody, one more thing: I don't need "Elvis In concert" in this classic album series, first of all it was released after Elvis passed away, second it's not a nice record. Strange that I missed it in the "The Album Collection" released a couple of years ago, but...

I have absolutely no problem with your point of view, so yeah, when you are looking forward to this release and enjoy it, that's great.

Digesting the tracks the 2nd CD does make a weird kind of sense if this CD is all you have, the original tracklist comprises of 55/56 material so I can see where they're coming from. But in sequence with the other albums it doesn't make sense. i've confused myself now.
