Black Day In History

November 22, 2015 | Music

It is a black day in history. Elvis Presley's latest album, by far the best so far, has lost the #1 spot in the UK charts. If only all fans recognized the miracle that Sony did on his poor originals. Finally they got the treatment they really deserved by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Elvis would be so happy with the result, since, as we all know, he loved it when his music was altered after the studio session. Unfortunately he was too lazy to encourage the producers to do it more often. That's why we were stuck with poor performances on If I Can Dream, Burning Love, Steamroller Blues and all the others for so long. Gladly Sony performed this little wonder under the inspiring leadership of Priscilla, who still carries his name, even 40+ year after their divorce. </sarcasm>

If I Can Dream is #3 in the UK, Scotland and Australia.

What a pointless posting! The fact that the album has now sold over 200,000 copies in the UK shows that you are very much in the minority with such negative views. His chart success should be something to celebrate rather than to ridicule.

I am with you Brian 100%. I am playing it right now for the umpteenth time and I am still reeling from the magnificence of it all.-A fan for over 50 years and I am staggered and surprised by the power and clarity of his voice, and I don't know why as I have every master released.. What confuses me is that I rate all the renowned releases of Elvis in the 50's, 60's and 70's and can't for the life of me understand why all Elvis fans don't rate this one

While it's really great to see our man back in top of the charts, I kinda agree with Lex on this. Have been listening to this compilation for a while and can only say this: songs which were orchestrated as originals sounds far better than other (just because I am used to this kind of sound), and the rest - with "forced orchestration" sound unnatural to me. I could have lived without this compilation. In my opinion (sorry, you guys!), Christmas Duets was better - but not the best - project. If only more songs were done the way The First Noel (from Duets) was... (no sarcasm at all)
bajo wrote on November 22, 2015
Why the sarcasm? I was anxious to hear this album. When I did I fell completely. It's one of the best compilations and productions of any Elvis album in a very long time. The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra calls for respect not only the orchestra but the producers not least. This is a good musical product and not least does it make Elvis' vocals shine. The album deserves positive recognition, which I think it has received by topping the UK chart, and elsewhere too. Especially these days when you consider what's hot in the pop/rock world. I guess it's hard to swallow for those who turned this project down, long before it's release. I'm an Elvis fan. I support quality releases like this, carrying Elvis' name!

Gorse wrote on November 23, 2015
Cruiser621 A bit extreme and dismissive of something very professional with your remarks 'crap like this' . How do you propose,( if you are at all interested ) to get Elvis relevant with that element outside the Elvis faithful even for a brief time . I presume you have a reason for disliking it so intensely so it would be interesting to hear your analysis. Sales of this project could possibly, and I say possibly open the door for other goodies like the Elvis On Tour 'extras'.
Cruiser621 wrote on November 23, 2015
I don't feel that re-doing or adding "dressing" in the form of additional orchestration does anything to advance the legacy of Elvis Presley. Leave his catalog as is and stop trying to re-live the past by supposedly updating his catalog as mentioned to see if he hits the hit parade or whatever you so delight in.
throughitall wrote on November 23, 2015
Excellent recording and if heard on even a store speaker system like Barnes & Noble it sounds extremely clear and present! The vocals all sound as if freshly recorded with the only dud being the "grass" song. Still disappointed that I cannot find this release in any WalMart or Best Buy. And there is no television ad or radio airplay or ads...sheesh why didn't they make a deal with QVC where it would have set records?!

It's amazing how well Adele's new cd is selling! Adele’s "25" has broken the single-week U.S.A. album sales record, according to Nielsen Music. After processing the first sales reports from Monday, Nov. 23, the album has already sold at least 2,433,000 in pure album sales in slightly more than three days!
Gorse wrote on November 26, 2015
TheMemphisFan - A nice time for us Brits as we rarely rule the world in anything these days and reminds one of Beatlemania in 1964. An Interesting point to me is that Adele although pretty has no writhing diva body and is there through sheer talent. Elvis has consistently paid the price for becoming 'larger' which has often threatened to overshadow his talent and achievements, while the total physical disintegration of MJ seems somehow be ignored by the majority.
Steve V wrote on November 26, 2015
Adele just spent a week in NY doing many TV appearances. It was pure hysteria. Right now, she is the hottest thing in the music world. Everywhere she went fans were there hours before to try & meet her. From all reports she was very nice to everyone signing autographs, and taking selfies. Class act and great singer. She deserves her success. Sir Tom was also in town this week for a book signing, and even sang a few songs at Barnes & Noble. It will probably be the last time Adele & Elvis share the charts!

TheMemphisFan wrote on November 26, 2015
albion73, "If I Can Dream" was/is a success in Australia and the U.K. mostly because of television promotion. Hype is important when it comes to sales and achieving high chart positions, and Adele has received plenty of hype in the U.S. for her new album. However, "If I Can Dream" hasn't been the hit that it deserved in the U.S. because of the lack of television promotion. Priscilla did appear live on a few news channels to promote it, but there have been zero television commercials. I suppose no one can tell SONY how to run their business, but I would sure like to when it concerns our boy Elvis! Oh well, it is what it is. ~ One thing is for sure though... SONY has certainly accommodated most of us fans with the Sony Legacy Edition releases and the FTD collectors label. :-)
Emiel Maier wrote on November 27, 2015
The lack of promotion is not only in the USA. I can give you a nice example of the attitude of Sony here in The Netherlands. Yesterday I had reporter from a regional radio station (Radio M Utrecht) broadcasting from my house. (With at least 200,000 listeners). On live radio I could give the album a firm boost. But before the broadcast the radio station contacted Sony and asked for a few copies of the CD to give away to the listeners. And the reply was: "We do not see the promotional value of the record's attention at your radio show", end of quote. WHAT!!!?? It is just unbelievable. I mean if the record is not being heard over the wireless, nobody will take notice..., and nobody will buy the record. It is just a vicious circle. But having said that: I am extremely proud of the British, the Scots and the Australians. What you have done is really amazing. Today I am being even more proud to be an Elvisfan, with the success of such a class album. (I rest my case :-))

Thanks Brian. This album certainly has legs. Sales seem to be growing. Based on earlier figures it won't be far off 400k by the end of this week. Elvis could have another million seller in the UK if this keeps up. There has to be a follow up based on this performance. Brian are you hearing any rumours of RIAA awards in January?? There must be more due.
Emiel Maier wrote on December 04, 2015
Keep on posting those sales figures Brian. It is highly appreciated. I just saw that the IICD album is number 2 again this week. (Behind the unbeatable Adele). But what struck me the most is the amount of sold units: an amazing 96,000 CDs! (I personally think that Elvis benefits from the fact that Adele's CD cannot be streamed. So if people want to obtain a hard copy of her CD than they have to go to a record store to buy. The fact is that IICD stands next to Adele's CD on the record shop shelves. Many buyers may be tempted to buy IICD as well). I personally would not like to stand in the shoes of Priscilla or the decision makers at Sony. A follow up that would sell considerably less would be considered a failure. The music business is a tricky (and difficult) one these days. I mean: IICD sold in its first week just 20,000 copies in the States (reaching no.21 in the Billboard 200) and failed to climb in the next week. Whereas on an average over 60,000 copies or more are being sold in the UK up till this date. The fact that this major Elvis CD release is being profitable also is of benefit to Follow That Dream Records. It justifies that there is still an Elvis market out there. If sales of general Elvis CD releases would drop than the accountants a Sony would certainly pull the plug out of FTD. In the early days FTD made a profit (the first FTD's were pressed in quantities of 10,000 units). Nowadays those figures have drastically gone down, and FTD is only breaking even. So bear this in mind.
TheMemphisFan wrote on December 05, 2015
Brian Quinn, how many units of the "If I Can Dream" cd have been sold in the U.S. so far? Also, Emiel Maier made mention of FTD. I do wonder how many total FTDs have sold since 1999... considering 130 regular releases, plus LP issues, plus 18 books... my guess is about 650,000 total units.

The thing that struck me the most is that the proposed single of this album (If I Can Dream) did not chart at all. (Apart from the vinyl singles chart). So I am most suprised by the fact that Burning Love has entered the Scottish singles chart. That seems to be the most popular (and commercial) track of the album. That song is also the one which I hear when I listen to BBC Radio 2. (Yes, every weekend I listen to BBC Radio 2 here in The Netherlands). Also 'Fever' has had massive airplay on Radio 2 in Belgium. Do you agree that the sales of the IICD album has benefited from Adele's 25? Both albums cover the same type of music (if you understand what I mean). With Elvis standing next to Adele on the record store shelves, my guess would be that 10 percent of the buyers '25' may have also said: "...I want that Elvis album as well...".
Brian Quinn wrote on December 20, 2015
Emiel, I agree, the Adele album certainly appeals to the same type of audience that Elvis appeals to. 'Burning Love' does appear to be the most liked track. However, it's a matter of taste. Whilst I like it and prefer it to the original it is far from being my favourite on the IICD album. My favourites are 'An American Trilogy'; 'How Great Thou Art' and 'Bridge Over Troubled Water'.
