Lil Wayne Ties Elvis

September 22, 2012 | People

Lil Wayne is positioned to overtake Elvis Presley as the male artist with the most appearances on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, now that he's tied the King — at 108 times — via his cameo on Juicy J's "Bandz a Make Her Dance." The Mike Will-produced ode to cheek-clapping strippers debuted at No. 71 on the chart this week thanks to guest verses from Weezy and self-namedropper 2 Chainz.

No need to get all scandalized, though: The feat isn't as impressive as it sounds. Presley released 31 jukeboxes-ablazing singles before the Hot 100 was founded in 1958, so none of the tracks from his iconic self-titled 1956 debut apply to the record. That discounts early earworms "Blue Suede Shoes," "Tutti Frutti," and "Blue Moon," plus "Heartbreak Hotel," "Houndog," and "Jailhouse Rock."

And as Billboard reminds us, Elvis plays principal musician on each and every one of his 108 chart-climbers, whereas Wayne takes the lead on just 42 of his Hot 100 entries. Only 2008's "Lollipop" went to No. 1 for the Young Money ringleader, but Presley notched the top spot nine times. And if we're going apples to apples here, Elvis had 25 Top 10 songs and ranked in the Top 40 another 80 times, to Wayne's 17 and 57, respectively.

Further proof of the arbitrary nature of these records: The Glee cast holds the title for most Hot 100 appearances of any act ever, with 204 visits to the chart.

Who?

Where the H*** did they get 108 ???? Elvis has had no less than 149 songs to appear on Billboard's Hot 100
FM wrote on September 23, 2012
I'd like to see Glee be in the same time frame as Elvis, they would not even get 10
FM wrote on September 23, 2012
Beside I HIGHLY doubt that Glee had that many

is that a she or a he? never heard of that entity !
Natha wrote on September 23, 2012
No idea who that is. Yet it doesn't mean a thing. Time has changed since the days of the King.

FM and Natha : agreed ! Besides, WTH is he (she) ? Absolutely not inportant to me . Always El.
benny scott wrote on September 23, 2012
Yep, now I noticed it, it's a 'he' ( "male artist....") Always El.

Besides that no one has a clue who Lil Wayne actually is, which says enough, as we all do know contemporary artists like Lady Ga Ga, Justin Bieber and Amy Whinehouse, why do they disregard the years 1956-1958? That is like rewriting history! For example taking Michael Jackson sales, excluding Thriller, or the sales of Lil Wayne and only including where he is the lead artist....

I don't believe the eternal list of stats that continue to emerge mean much at all. As Elvis fans we should just recognise that he was incredibly successful in various fields of entertainment, shook the music world to its foundations, reinvented himself before Madonna, and continues to be one of the most recognised names after all these years. Whether this album or that album should have done this or that, is now irrelevant, the number of chart entries and sundry information, etc now all bundle up into one lasting memory - a phenomenal entertainer.

Gorse, very, very well said ! Always El.

With no disrespect to Lil Wayne, but, Wayne and Elvis can't be compared (for so many reasons) Lil Wayne, has done more "guest appearances" on other people's recordings, than his own recordings. Elvis (for the most part) was the solo performer on his vocals. Billboard magazine has changed the rules so much, that its hard to take the magazine seriously, anymore. Elvis has been cheated by Billboard and the RIAA, so many times. Its obvious, to me, that Elvis sold more than the rest !

Elvis has had no less than 149 songs to appear on Billboard's Hot 100. So where do you get this 108? Billboard has grown to be a ridiculous company, they themselves know that Elvis is the King of all their charts, they are just jealous that NO ONE can dethrone him.

Keep in mind this is also an era where 3500 sales can put you in the top ten! Not like when you actually had to sell huge amounts!

Look at this, I'd like to see Lill and anyone today do this September 25, 1956 Elvis received a telegram from RCA with official congratulations for an industry first when additional orders made the single Love Me Tender a gold record before it was even released. RCA got 918230 orders before even releasing the single.

Lil Wayne, Juicy J, Weezy, 2 Chainz?? Wow! Call me old-fashioned but I’ll stick to artists with actual names that can be pronounced (Elvis, The Beatles, CCR, Frank Sinatra, Marvin Gaye, Kenny Rogers, etc…) TCB

Juicy j lol really? hey when u dont have talent, guess you better have something intersting why not a silly name.

Who the hell is Lil Wayne and who cares? What a joke! That's like comparing Beethoven to Chubby Checker. What crap.

Not sure who Lil Wayne is, either. But I am glad at least the article tells the entire story instead of glossing over it and dismissing Elvis in the process. We lost another great performer yesterday - Andy Williams. I had the pleasure of seeing him twice in concert and he sounded even better in person than he does on record.

Never heard of Lil Wayne! Many others here in this forum don't know him either. That sums it up I think...

Ladies of this site .Ever wonder why he's called Lil Wayne?

Lil Wayne is probably some rapper who hasn't got the least bit of talent & isn't fit to clean El's Blue Suede Shoes. He probably raps about how bad the young black people are put upon & how the world pwes them just because they were born blakect.
