Elvis Is Back Revisited

May 04, 2012 | Music

Out very soon is a stunning new audiophile version of the landmark album ELVIS IS BACK! from 1960. Victrola reworked the masters and in several cases was able to get the best audio thus far. Listen and compare – the crystal clear and warm quality of these recordings will surprise even those who have the official versions of this album.

Victrola is also the first to place these recordings in the context of his career. You will hear early try-outs, home recordings, alternate takes, rehearsals and later LIVE versions. Elvis clearly thought a lot of this album and returned to it again and again as a source for inspiration, a theme that is explored in the fascinating liner notes. ELVIS IS BACK! is presented in a sensational packaging (deluxe foldout full colour digipack) with topnotch design, relevant photos (many of them rare) and a fascinating 20-page booklet.

First song on CD2 is Reconsider Baby and wrongly dated December 12 1956 (Sun studio, from Million Dollar Quartet) instead of December 4. Always El.

I think the FTD version of Elvis Is Back is the must have edition. The sound on the official release is already perfect. I doubt Victrola can do better. My dealer sent me the track list for this set and I wasn't impressed at all. The snippets of home recordings and live versions from 1969 through 1977 are a creative marketing ploy, and another booklet may be okay, but altogether it's not worth upwards of 50 bucks. It's rare that I praise FTD, but in this case, I must say that they've done the stellar job. I'll save my money and not buy the Victrola special edition.

Lefty & Benny - I agree. FTD is the ultimate version. This is a slick marketing ploy to get people to rebuy the same material (they know ELvis fans). With the home recordings, live recorings, etc, it will take away from the beautiful flow the FTD version gives you.

Hello, a bad re-organisation of existing material. The link between 'Elvis Is Back!' original material and later cover versions is entirely superficial. Great cover, the booklet may be fabulous - but so what? The music's already out there cogently organised in superb quality by booth FTD and BMG.
