The Man And His Music #84

June 05, 2009 | Other

The new issue of TMAHM dropped in our mail box this week. Next to the regulars like news and reviews this one contains an interview with Charlie Hodge (no, not recent, but unpublished), a conversation with Millie Kirkham and a very in depth review of the TTWII The Complete Works-box.

It was a great issue, but probably their worst cover. Elvis doesnt look good at all.

Excellent issue! Most people in horrible health & about to die don't usually look too good.

Elvis looks fine in the cover pic. Just a bit tired. Elvis-Man & His Music-is the best magazine about Elvis presley. I wish they sold it, in the states.

Ruthie exactly - that's why they should have used a better picture for their cover. For this reason I don't want the Elvis 1977 TV Special ever to be released to the general public. No one wants to remember Elvis this way. GK - he looks fine? Geesh see a doctor will you?

And one more thing. I have every issue since #1 and yes, this indeed is their worst cover or should I say the worst photo of Elvis ever used on their cover. Nice issue, but bad cover photo. Is it a crime to feel this way? He looks tired, he's about to die, etc, all these excuses, gee all I wish is that they didn't use photos like that period! I'm glad there are some candid people that write to this site from time to time and not ones who always look for an excuse whenever a so slightly negative comment is made. Are we all supposed to think one way?

He's got a strange look in his eyes indeed but please stop critisizing the cover because someone decided not to use a overall well known picture instead. Don't hide the truth that's part of the legend, how do you think Hendrix, Morisson, Cobain, Monroe, Joplin looked in their last months..

Thanks Jerome - I love when you guys prove my point. Of course I dont know how Joplin , Hendrix, Morrison looked before they died because I never see pictures of them that way. So why do we need to be reminded of how Elvis looked? I never said use a better known picure of Elvis on the cover did I? I said use a better picture, even a better late 70's photo would do. I am sure there are others way better than this one. I'm not sure if this magazine is on the newstands in the U.K. but if it is I dont want folks snickering at it as some love to do when Elvis is shown like this. Just a bad cover to a great magazine in my opionion.

Steve V. is telling me, to go see a doctor? Cool it, Stevie !! Poor Elvis, if he gained weight, or looked tired, or appeared bloated, from time to time, he was critcized, so much.

The photo used on this magazine cover, is a decent photo of Elvis, compared to some, of the others, that were taken in 1976 and 1977, and printed in books and magazines, and in newspapers. And, I agree, Steve, it's not needed to show the bad photos, to the world. All of his life, Elvis, looked amazing, and its very unfair, for the media, to concentrate on Elvis' last 2 years, when at times, he didn't look, or feel, or perform, his best, because of bad health issues. Elvis deserves some respect.

One more thing and then I'll shut up. The main problem I have with this photo is it reminds me so much of that 1976 National Lampoon spoof cover they did on Elvis, in really bad taste. This is the image many folks had of Elvis in 1975-77. For those of us who were fans back then, it brings back to mind that image and the rumors, tabloid headlines, etc. The M&HIM magazine have used 'heavy' shots of Elvis before. I just think in this one, he looks sick, tired, and not too much like Elvis, but more like a bad impersonator. That's it for me on this topic.

I'm looking at this cover & it's Elvis circa 1977. I don't see it as a particulary bad shot. Too me it's Elvis towards the end of his career in concert & sweating under the lights. Iv'e seen worse & of course better. I think M&HM mixes all phases of Elvis career. Although I usually agree with Steve I am not offended with this paricular picture. What offends me is Steve gives his honest opinion & is slammed for it. Does everything Elvis have to have a Pollyanna slant to it?

well with Elvis being the most photographed artist in history its logically not every picture deserves a prize. On the other hand deal with it. Believe me there are far worse photo's taken of him and some of these are never released by its fans..

so therefore if a candid picture is used for a cover of a magazine don't whine about it- he isn't looking like Godzilla..
