Turner Classic Movies Devotes A Day To Elvis

I think it's nice that TCM is doing this, but don't you think they could have picked a few better films. There are some good ones in here, but "Charro", "Speedway", and "Clambake" are not some of the best ones, and they were definitely not among Elvis' favorites, either. I think maybe more of the earlier movies would have been better choices. I think they also should have at least selected "This Is Elvis" and maybe even the '68 Special or Aloha, something more concert-oriented. Any opinions on this?

Charro is a good pick if only because it had a good cast, & was not a typical guy/girl/beach/racecar driver movie. At least it was an attempt at something different. The ones to avoid in this crop in my opinion are Kissin Cousins (very cheaply made, my kids even thought it was silly), Harum Scarum (nuff said!), and Clambake (tired formula at that point with Elvis going thru the motions). The others are OK but then again when you talk about Elvis movies there are only about 10 worthwhile viewing.

Turner always comes up with some Elvismovies on the anniversaryday, appreciate it.

People have their favourite Elvis on tape or DVD to watch at home. Why discuss what Turner does on TV as that matters to to a true Elvis fan.

These aren't necessarily the 12 I'd pick, but everybody has their personal favorite(s), and Turner doesn't own all 33. They certainly don't own the rights to the '68 Comeback or Aloha. Steve V: I'm buying the Warner DVD collection that contains "Kissin' Cousins" so I'll never have to wait for TCM to show it again.

What will be interesting is whether or not they show the newly mastered widescreen versions of Charro & Kissin Cousins with the re-established Smokey Mountain Boy.

The first point is that TCM are the only ones who ever do a whole day to Elvis every year so plus points to them. As for the films...well each to their own. Stay Away Joe, should be Stay WELL Away as it's one of his worst. I like Charro! as it was an attempt at something different and is an OK (not great) western. TTWII is fantastic, Speedway is a great late period Elvis film, Double Trouble is pretty bad, Spinout is as bad as Elvis is chubby in it, Harum Scarum, is dreadful, Kissin' Cousins is ok but cheap, Jailhouse Rock is an all time classic, Viva Las Vegas is fantastic, Clambake is trash and Wild In The Country is a brave attempt if flawed. I won't watch it as I have the ones I like but it's good just to remember. After all let's face it the 30th anniversary is a bit of a let down as far as originality goes.

Sorry to disagree, but I love Clambake, I'm a sucker for a romantic story AND I enjoyed most of the songs. A lot of those other movies are the weaker ones but Elvis is Elvis!

I love Elvis's films. I know they aren't the best in the world, but they remind me of being a kid and missing school to stay at home to watch his films! I actually like his movies. I am looking forward to purchasing the new remastered DVD's. I think his movies have a charm of their own and hope younger fans will feel the same way I did.

By the way,anyone else love kid galahad? i didnt mean to hit him like that,but it was getting unconformable in there do i still get my 5 dollars?

Have to agree with a couple of responses on the list; I do love Kid Galahad, Elvis is so cute and most of the songs are favourites really lovely. I don't know why so many people hate Clambake? Elvis looks great, cast is pretty good, songs very enjoyable, girl I never loved, you don't know me etc. The story isn't great but it's better than a lot it's just the race at the end that I can't stand. But Elvis movies, everyone says they hate them, but put one on and most people will come to watch (at least a bit!) Part of all our lives. Good on TCM. Long live the King!

Mergirl - I love Kid Galahad also, but do not like Clambake. I will tell you why. First of all just compare Kid Galahad to Clambake. You really cant can you as they are in 2 different leagues, storywise, acting wise, songwise. By the time ELvis made Clambake, the public was not going to see his films anymore. The world of music and pop culture had changed but Elvis didnt. He was stuck in the same film rut and the formula wasnt working anymore. The stories were tired and weak, even the costars were the same! The songs were getting worse. How can you like this soundtrack? Clambake is one of the worst film title songs ever. Ridiculous lyrics for 1967. Then there's Who Needs Money, Confidence, etc mostly very bad songs and again compared to Kid Galahad, not even a contest. If ELvis continued to make films like this his career would have been totally dead by 1968. Thats why I dont like it!
