And Again Elvis Beats Other Deceased Celebrities

June 16, 2006 | People
Even after death, Elvis is still "The King." Forbes Magazine says Elvis Presley is still a big-time moneymaker, nearly 30 years after he died. Presley's estate earned an estimated $52 million last year.

Late Nirvana front-man Kurt Cobain is just behind that. His estate earned about $50 million. Forbes says most of that money came from the sale of one-fourth of Nirvana's song catalog by Cobain's widow Courtney Love in April. Cobain committed suicide in 1994.

Others on the list of dead celebrities with major earning power are Albert Einstein, Andy Warhol, and Marilyn Monroe. The use of Einstein's name and image earned the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, which controls his estate, about $20 million in 2005. Disney's line of "Baby Einstein" toys and videos generated $400 million in sales last year. Warhol died in 1987, but the Andy Warhol Foundation for the visual arts earned $16 million. Even Monroe, who died in 1962, earned $8 million in 2005.

I'm not surprised at this news. The way EPE and Sony/BMG milk us dry with the upteenth releases of the same product with a few tempting "never-before-released" stuff surely helps to put Elvis on top! Just look at the recently announced 1-Disc editions of the "68 Comeback" and "Aloha From Hawaii" and see what I mean.

The headline in my e-mail read "And Again Elvis Beats Other Corpses", Which I have to say is a bit tasteless.

Why always be so negative?? This is very good news in my eyes. I always smile every year i read this. This is just good promotion for the man, remember...he is dead almost 30 years!!! I dont care how much releases there are out every year with the same music, i guess there is still a market for it, otherwise BMG wouldn´t release them. If you don´t like them, dont buy them!! Hands Up For The King!!

I agree with Shakingruud.... If you don't like some of the things EPE?SONYBMG is doing don't get it... As for me I will get as much on Elvis as I can...

"elvis beats other corpses" is a dreadful intro maybe written by a 20 year old but yet again elvis proves the world still has,nt come up with his like 30 years on and all this from a man who was nervous going on stage as for media hype and "milking the public" people buy what they want, if they ever buy "what they dont want," let me know and ill stock a couple of wherehouses in advance.
