This Is Elvis – DTS

October 22, 2004 | Video
The second unreleased Elvis movie we found on DVD in the Far East is “This Is Elvis”.

Design

In contrary to the “Elvis In Concert” DTS release they used the original movie poster on the front. On the back are some bad images, probably found on the World Wide Web, no effort was made to find a good version. The navigation menu looks like is comes from one of those “make your own DVD” programs, and looks to be home made because you have to click all the way through to the first title to play the movie.

Content

The movie “This Is Elvis” is a well known one by many fans. It tells the story of Elvis’ life using actors and real footage of Elvis. When it was first released it contained a lot of material never seen before. This could have served as one of the definitive documentaries on Elvis, but unfortunately many more were made.

The quality of the DVD is video quality; obviously because it is a transfer from a video. It is good to watch, but at some points the screen freezes. The audio isn’t bad, but there is a lot of background noise (from the old video they used, the intro shows "Warner Home Video"). You can select DTS and Dolby 5.1. Surround Sound from the menu, but you don't hear it. So be aware. Although you can buy this release on-line from websites in the Far East, this probably isn’t a legal release.

Conclusion

As with other unreleased Elvis movies, this edition will do until we get a good official edition. Hopefully we won't have to wait too long. The DVD release of this movie has been announced almost two years ago.

I just got This and the "In Concert" special. They are definitely NOT DTS and they are copies of VHS, but hey, you can't get them anywhere else, and for the $20, it was worth getting them. ThIs is Elvis is the expanded version with 42 extra minutes and the "In Concert" has both shows from '77 and the special ( which does look better than the other two concerts ). These are the best we can get right now, so enjoy!
