ElvisNews review

Although I can’t handle 3 of them at the same time anymore, the title is one of the most appealing of Elvis’ movies, thus soundtracks.

Design

As with all “classic album” releases this 7” cover art has been worked out very nicely. The only minor is that the booklet is very thin.

Content

When I bought the original album some 30 years ago, it turned out to be one of my favourites at that moment. Most of the songs were catchy pop tunes and an album with “Return to Sender” on it couldn’t be wrong in my ears. The title song is one of the better post army title tracks, while “Thanks to the Rolling Sea” and the calypso-like “Song of the Shrimp” were different from what I was used to at the moment.

In other words, I used to be happy with it and I must say I still don’t have problems to hear the original album every now and then. Okay, my taste moved on and it is certainly not among my favourite albums, but I can still listen to it.

This FTD release is something completely different. The first 13 tracks are okay, but in the remaining 18 tracks one of the few Elvis songs I really can’t stand, “Mama”, is available in 7 of them. The worst thing is that they are not in a row, so either I have to pre-program my player or I have to use skip quite often. I did that once and that’s more than enough for me. If I have the desire to listen to the soundtrack in the future, I’ll stick to my good old vinyl version of it. Since there are no outtakes of the title track and “Return to Sender”, there is not a real reason to play this version anyway.

The tracks that I did play sounded good and I didn’t notice the usual mistakes on first (and last) listen.

Conclusion

“Mama! Mama! Mama!” would have been a nice title for the reissue, which is not more than a cabinet filler for me.

You can order this CD from ElvisMatters.

I like the cover ..certainly not the worst by any means........really looking forward to this release some great songs on this soundtrack....the first nine are really good ......also think this album is very underrated ......the title song can stand alongside any of elvis's best recordings.

It's a shame that some of the session tapes remain lost (perhaps forever). Nonetheless it will be great to have everything they do have all together in one place. Including deluxe packaging and no doubt in much improved sound over the Double Features release of years ago. Really looking forward to it.

You guys like that pic of Elvis..on the album cover ?? I don't !! He looks tired..and.. too tanned.. and that hairstyle.. wasn't a good look for him. (the semi comb over). RCA should have chosen a much better pic.. on the original album.. However.. its the music that counts.. And the album features some good music..

This was one of the better soundtracks of his movie career; however, what FTD is providing us is another rehash and no real new additional material. Sorry guys, I'll pass on this one and stick with my double features CD from a number of years ago. Why do I get the feeling this is the last wheez for our man Elvis?

Cruiserer621: I wouldn't exactly call this a rehash. I see things on here that I din't have. But even if I already had everything that's on here I'd still buy it for the deluxe packaging. Not too mention the improved sound. I have no doubt it will sound better than the Double Features version of this title. I can't wait to get rid of that. But to each his/her own.

I kinda like the cover even with the hairstyle which I agree does'nt work for Elvis. I was 8 years old when my dad took me to the movie and bought me the album which at the time came with a 1963 calender here in the USA. I guess those are just precious memories that makes it all seem great to me. You remember things like that when your parents have passed away and it is still sad after all of this time that Elvis has passed. Anyway I love the album and the movie.

I think this is not enough for a collectors label. They could have waited another 2-3 years, maybe the original session tapes turn up sometime. And for the time of year FTD should have made up a collectors edition of the "Sings the wonderful world of Christmas" album, instead of just a few outtakes on the recent "I sing all kinds". Another missed opportunity: I am still waiting for the finally uncut, unedited, unfaded, undubbed version of "Merry Christmas Baby".

In a case like this I tend to give Ernst and Roger the benefit of the doubt. Only they know where and what has been searched and how often. Only they know who they've talked too, how many leads they've followed about missing tapes. I expect they've come to the conclusion that they've done all that can be be reasonably expected. Exhausted all avenues. Sure they could wait another 2 or 3 years. Maybe even 4 or 5. There's always the chance something might turn up out of nowhere. But how long do you wait? None of us has forever. I suspect if Ernst and Roger felt that there was any reasonable hope of tapes turning up they would have waited. They're giving us everything they have. I'm fine with that.

I used to love this album! I think it's maybe one of the better soundracks, but heavily underrated! Now, here in glorious audio, a classic rising from the ashes! I really enjoyed sitting through the entire CD with a sound I think even the hardest non-soundtrack fan will have to change his/her mind about! I'm more than pleased with this classic release. I guess the reason for the shortage of material is the fact that Ernst has given up finding more material from these sessions. If you ever had doubt about this release, you won't regret getting it! This album is simply great!

Jerry Nodak, believe it or not, I broke down and actually ordered this FTD CD. My daughter was here for Easter and we watched the flick on my DVD and listened to my Double Features CD Soundtrack. Song of the Shrimp was my daughter's favorite. This is one of my favorite soundtracks so after a rating of one star I'll change my rating to a 4 and hope that the sound quality is better than the CD I presently own. I only wish there were more outtakes; which is one big reason I panned it during my first review. I guess when there's no new alternate takes available, you gotta go with the flow.
