Liverpool All Shook Up With Memphis

January 19, 2004 | Other
The Lord Mayor of Liverpool will receive the keys to the city of Memphis, Tennessee this week. He will attend a world press conference in New York on Wednesday 21st January to celebrate 50 years of rock and roll.

This year marks half a century since Elvis Presley cut his first record "That¹s All Right" at the legendary Sun Studio in July 1954. Liverpool schoolboys, Lennon.J and McCartney.P were among the millions left "all shook up" by the emergence of The King, as rock and roll boomed from Memphis to the Mersey.

To mark the anniversary Liverpool will join in a year long celebration with Memphis. There will be a number of major musical events in Liverpool throughout 2004. Liverpool's links with Memphis could also include sending schoolchildren across the Atlantic to learn more about American culture.
