What a poor effort from Sony. But the part where I'm not sure if I should laugh or cry is "The King of SPECIAL VERSIONS" part. I wonder who is the genius who compiles this crap.
JerryNodak wrote on November 09, 2014
Just what buyer is SONY aiming for with this piece of junk? It's all over the map. I have ZERO interest. Next!
DerekH wrote on November 09, 2014
Good selection for someone who is now an Elvis fan,,,,,, as for me I them all, except a few remixes.
RobIreland wrote on November 09, 2014
"The King of Special Versions" Seriously are they having a laugh !!??!! Anyone else feel insulted ?
DerekH wrote on November 09, 2014
Sorry, that should read "not an Elvis fan"
ZEC wrote on November 10, 2014
Besides, see the effort Sony have taken in designing the Cover for Elvis' 80th Anniversary....an art student would have done a much better job !

Never thought of In the Ghetto as a love song.
Natha wrote on November 10, 2014
Is that all they can come up with for this occasion? By the way: Shake that tambourine?

Here we go again With the complaining. As soon as Sony releases something everyone is standing in line waiting to complain. I think it's a good release, and a good selection of songs. This release is intended for the non-Elvis collector who don't have all the songs, outtakes and releases from back in the day.... How they could choose Shake That Tambourine as a Choice of remix is funny, but I am looking forward to listening to something "New". Elvis left us almost 40 years ago, I'm happy that Sony is still making New compilations. Some I agree With, some I don't. But like Elvis said, u can't win 'em all.... :-)

Not the type of release that would exite a long time fan. Of some interest are the 'Shake That Tambourine' remix and the long version of 'Wooden Heart'. I haven't seen them elsewhere before. Talking of remixes, I remember when 'Ruberneckin' was chosen as a follow-up to 'ALLC' there was some sort of competition and a few remixes were made. I heard on of those remixes beck then and thought it was much better than the one that was released. I have lost the file since but would really like to find it again, or better still see it released in one of the many compilations by RCA. Does anyone know if these remixes are are available anywhere?

No one at Sony has a clue as to how to market the man anymore. I mean, this is for the 80th? How uninspiring and lazy can you get. And that last disc is just plain embarrassing. Wow is all I can say!

Is this C.D. a global release? The song selections, and placing, could have been much better, same for the artwork. I am hoping we will get a better Birthday C D celebration set in January, and this collection is aimed mainly at the casual buyer at the budget price. I must admit I am curious to hear the "Shake that Tambourine" remix.

Junk.

Absolute crap from a sequencing standpoint. What rocket science at Sony came up with this hair brain idea? The constant recycling of Elvis material is becoming ludicrous anymore. Sony should put out one more CD which no one cares about anymore and quit.

Rubbish cover and on the cheesy side, king of rock, king of etc,Elvis back catalogue is an utter mess and as been for years but it obviously makes money which is the key here and that includes the Elvis exhibition at the 02,EPE have decided to show different exhibits so the fans go back every two months who are they kidding EPE must think us fans are idiots!!
VivaLasDavies wrote on November 10, 2014
This release is indeed totally bizarre and pointless. However did I just read "the Elvis back catalogue is an utter mess". I can only assume this person has never heard of FTD.
Mr Cool wrote on November 11, 2014
Not aimed at those of us who read this website or who buy mags like Man and His Music but obviously for the casual buyer. We've had excellent sets like Prince from Another Planet and this years That's the Way It Is box and of course FTD. Sony put out Nations Favourite Elvis Songs last year to tie in with TV show. It went top 5. I'm guessing few of us bought that but it went gold. They're in the business of making money.

To Marty, I also remember there were a few versions of Rubberneckin' at around that time. I too had, and lost, a file that was much better than the Oakenford one… it was very stripped back from what I remember and a great version - I wonder if we're talking about the same one. I've searched all my old backups but have been unable to find it - keep me posted if you have any luck… would love to get hold of it. For some reason, Black Eyed Peas comes to mind, or am I going mad?

The 'Elvis 80' release is mainly for the general public and collector alike. It is being released in time for the lucrative Christmas market. This is NOT the main release for 2015 which I am reliably informed will be something totally different and one that makes the hair stand up on the back of your neck!!
marty wrote on November 11, 2014
To 'jimsayshello'. We seem to have the same problem. I cannot find my file and I think I deleted it because it could only be played by a software I didn't want to use but regreted it later when I could not find it again. Don't remember who did the remix. I'll keep you posted if I find anything!

Natha wrote on November 11, 2014
I sincerely hope Brian Quinn is right. For the casual music lover the first two cds are of course outstanding. However, I wonder if those people do not have enough choice of the vast amount of compilations that appeared in the last couple of years. CD 3 is for me not interesting as remixes are mostly not my cup of tea. And the cover? The only pro is that Elvis is most likely the only artist in the world that is well known by the first name alone! Maybe the only person in the world. For the rest the cover is terrible. Couldn't they ome up with a little more design (time/money)?

Natha wrote - "For the casual music lover the first two cds are of course outstanding. However, I wonder if those people do not have enough choice of the vast amount of compilations that appeared in the last couple of years." I thought the exact same thing when I first saw the track list. For no better description, the first two CDs are rather generic and repetitive of what's already available on other compilations released in the past.

Those Sony people, how can they release such a ... Elvis fans of my age (68) are feeling really sad with the way they are "treating" Elvis Presley as "a no longer interesting performer, singer and actor". This is far (and very far + taxes) of the way that The Beatles or Jackson releases are marketed. I have never been interested in no way to those remix. And what is there to say about that ridiculous cover with not a single effort being made. I will never buy such a release ! Period !
benny scott wrote on November 12, 2014
Hi PRESEYER, Natha and TheMemphisFan, I couldn't agree more, let this be clear. Never was interested at all in re-mixes, but I perfectly can understand the younger generation and the fact that some of them do like them. As for the Sony people, I think it's due to the fact they are too young ( or maybe WE are too old {LOL} ) to understand our man's importance in the musical world. After all, a lot of 'veterans' like us were there almost from the beginning, so we are a lot harder to please, and that's no sin at all (imho) ! Being very curious what Brian means by "making the hair stand up at the back of your neck". I'm afraid that only the discovery of complete new material could have such effect on me but I hope I'm wrong ! Always El.

To me , these non-descript releases are designed to get Elvis "shelf -space " in stores. This type of release will probably continue as long as CDs are a viable format. In my opinion , the only compilation that makes sense at this point is a comprehensive overview of every Elvis chart hits in order of release, mono for the tracks originally released that way , in deluxe packaging . With a little bit of TV promotion such a release could reach an whole new audience , and could be used to promote FTD and the rest of Elvis catalog to them.
marty wrote on November 12, 2014
Sony, or before BMG, RCA or whaterver the name is of the company owning the copyright to Elvis recordings at the time are only interested in the profit. They don't care about his legacy as long as it doesn't affect the sales. And if you look at the sales and the chart possitions it is releases like this that normally do better, not the type of cd's we longtime fans would buy. Even during his life 'G.I. Blues' did much better than 'Elvis Is Back' and 'Pure Gold' did better than 'Today' or 'Promised Land'. This album will sell better than a cd of newly found unreleased outtakes (if there were any) whether we like it or not!
Gorse wrote on November 12, 2014
I agree with the sentiments expressed here wholeheartedly as an Elvis fan, but on the other hand through the years I have always looked for my favourite known tracks of an artist, when not completely au fait with their output. On a personal note my favourite song as accompanying my profile is the fantastic Surrender and that never featured on the Top 20 favourites TV show or on this selection --me thinks that can't be right on any level !!!
Andy_2 wrote on November 12, 2014
yep this is crap but what exactly could they release that wouldn't get shot down or have us all complaining? If it's for non fans then it's all already out there, you want 50's Elvis then take your pick from a million releases, same for the 60's or 70's. If they really want to celebrate his 80th then just a simple compilation that has the best of each decade and the best of the movie songs. It covers all bases and gives a non fan a good overview of the kings career. Hopefully from there they might want to dig deeper and new fans are found.
joemin wrote on November 13, 2014
Good to se something coming out. Why not 80 songs?? I assume the titles are just working titles, this is not the final track listing. Yes, I'll be buying.

It has been 37 years, What could possibly make the hair stand up on the back of your neck unless they found a wealth of new songs never before released or the missing 50's outtakes. Perhaps 3 more takes of Britches will do it for some people. Just hype to me unless proven otherwise.

I've been following Brian Quinn on other sites for a very long time and so far everything that he said that was like hair standing up on the back of you neck in years before, he's been right on the nose with it, also I know a few close friends who are in the Elvis circle that has confirmed this and said hopefully this will be the first and not the last, which honestly I believe it won't.
FM wrote on November 21, 2014
