Another List: NME's Greatest Single Chart

November 12, 2002 | Other
Joy Division's melancholic anthem 'Love Will Tear Us Apart' has been named the greatest single of all time in a new poll compiled by the NME to mark the 50th anniversary of the singles chart. Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit is in second place, followed by Anarchy In The UK by the Sex Pistols. Elvis Presley only makes one appearance, at number 47 with 'In The Ghetto'.

Some music fans may raise an eyebrow at the poll, which was decided by NME writers and gives prominence to a number of acts who are relatively new on the music scene. Unsurprisingly, the list has little in common with one compiled by Radio 2 earlier this week, also to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the singles chart.
