Where Do I Go from Here?

Rating:
4.1 / 5

Words & Music: Paul Williams

If I knew the way I'd go back home
The countryside has changed so much I'd surely end up lost
Half-remembered names and faces so far in the past
On the other side of the bridges that were burned once they were crossed

Tell me where, where does a fool go when there's no-one left to listen
To a story without meaning that nobody wants to hear
Tell me where, where does a fool go when he knows there's something missing
Tell me where, where will I go from here
Where will I go from here

Get back home where my childhood dreams and wishes still are none of my regrets
Go back to a place where I can figure all the odds
Have a fighting chance to lose the blues and win my share of bets

Tell me where, where does a fool go when there's no-one left to listen
To a story without meaning that nobody wants to hear
Tell me where, where does a fool go when he knows there's something missing
Tell me where, where will I go from here
Where will I go from here

Tell me where, where does a fool go when there's no-one left to listen
To a story without meaning that nobody wants to hear
Tell me where, where does a fool go when he knows there's something missing
Tell me where, where will I go from here
Where will I go from here

Tell me where, where does a fool go when there's no-one left to listen
To a story without meaning that nobody wants to hear
Tell me where, where does a fool go when he knows there's something missing
Tell me where, where will I go from here
Where will I go from here

Tell me where, where does a fool go when there's no-one left to listen
To a story without meaning that nobody wants to hear
Tell me where, where does a fool go when he knows there's something missing
Tell me where, where will I go from here
Where will I go from here

The song isnt too bad but the LP was a complete mess with no rhyme or reason for being released in the manner it was.

By far the weakest song from the March '72 recordings sessions that produced "Burning Love", "Always On My Mind", "Separate Ways" and "Fool". This "leftover" would have been an ok LP track on a strong album, but it was a featured song on the LP "Elvis (Fool) (listed on the front cover???). An album of leftovers, oddities and three or four really good songs, this is not one of the really good songs on the album. Not bad, but one of the lesser 70's ballads.

I like this one, especially the drums in this one.

Featured on an album of remainders from some good early 70s sessions. The album itself should have been budgeted on the Camden label instead of hitting the shops at full price. The song isn't to bad, but I can see why it got a late release.

a song i really love and can get into. i have been playing this quite al lot recently. it fits spot on in the standing room only album (the album that never was) that ftd released, i think that album could of been a chart topper if it was released.

Great song, love the ending, EL really goes for it. Should have more playtime!

The "Fool" album was a bit of hotchpotch of everything from ballads such as this to old blues and traditional country.A very wordy song which only someone with Paul Williams writing skills could make work. I quite like it, can't remember the last time I heard it though.

Slightly out of the ordinary arrangement and song from Elvis, and as it is different is always refreshing to hear. As stated not done any favours on the original album but it stands up well as a song in its own right.

Love this song ! Songs like this one, are the "hidden gems" in the catalog. Would like to see this one remixed and overdubbed to make it sound even better!

Great song that fit nicely on the "standing room only" as Burninglove92 said, I had been a fan for many years before I noticed it, and when I did it became a favorite right away, maybe because it in some ways were different from his other songs that I had gotten used to by then. I still have it on my favorite playlist, 4,5 stars.

I've always liked this song immensely and it will always be a great addition to the Elvis song catalog. I like every song from the Elvis "Fool" album immensely.

This is one of the songs that, to me, makes you a fan. This song, "It's a Matter of Time," and " We Can Make the Morning" are among his least known yet very best performances. I absolutely love this song. Elvis sings like he really means the lyrics of this song. One of my favorites!

Love this track. I've never understood the criticism this one gets.

Paul Williams movie music; performed by the songwriter himself as the fade-out / end-credits tune for the well-received Clint Eastwood / Jeff Bridges buddy flick, Thunderbolt & Lightfoot. Another lost Hollywood opportunity for Elvis, as his is by far the better version of the song, and there was more than a little interest (on the producer's part) in having him cut the song for the film.

This is one of my top 5 all time favourite songs. I never tire of it and play it most days. It should have been a movie end credit or opening song. The drumming is out of this world and Elvis sings it with such passion. I wish the FTD Standing Room Only album was released as a standard LP back in the day. It would have been huge for Elvis. This song is a 5 star wonder (wish I could give it more).
