Three Corn Patches

Rating:
2.9 / 5

Words & Music: Jerry Leiber Mike Stoller

I said three corn patches about four cotton fields away
I said three corn patches about four cotton fields away
Lives the prettiest girl in the whole darn U.S.A.
I said A

She's got big brown eyes and long black wavy hair, Mmm
She's got big brown eyes and long black wavy hair
She's so beautiful, people it don't seem fair

Well I've been to Chicago, been to New Orleans
Yes, I've been to Chicago, been to New Orleans
But I'd rather see my baby workin' in her old blue jeans

I said three corn patches
About four cotton fields away
I said three corn patches
About four cotton fields away
Lives the prettiest girl in the whole darn U.S.A.
I said A

She keeps a big bull dog out in the yard all night
She keeps a big bull dog out in the yard all night
And it barks like a bear oh, but he don't bite

Yeah,
I said three corn patches
About four cotton fields away
I said three corn patches
About four cotton fields away
Lives the prettiest girl in the whole darn U.S.A.
I said A
Gimme three, gimme four
I said three, well four

This is a really good Leiber & Stoller song, unfortunately Elvis failed to do it justice. The vocal is very poor.Listening to it I didn't think Elvis was going to make it through the song. Good backing vocals though!

Not a good Leiber and Stoller tune and Elvis just sounds bored with the song. The album was haphazardly put on the LP "Raised On Rock", but the ROR project should have been put on hold until after the Dec of 73 recording sessions. An album called Raised On Rock should have included "Promised Land", "I've Got A Thing About You Baby", "Talk About The Good Times", "I Got A Feelin' In My Body", "If You Talk In Your Sleep" as well as the four rock/funk tunes from ROR (title song, "Find Out What's Happening", "Just A Little Bit" and "If You Don't Come Back". Put three ballads on there to balance out the LP a little ("Sweet Angeline", "For Ol' Time Sake" and "I Miss You" or "Are You Sincere") and you have an album that would have been very well received.

poor performance by Elvis to close out a mostly poor album. raised on rock it was not. the songs never got out of 2nd gear.

Quite possibly the worst vocal of his career. The songs isn't as bad as it seems.

Poor LP,I suspect that Parker wouldn't let anyone near him with a decent song,so he sang this rubbish.

The song is allright, it's the singer who isn't. With the voice, the energy and the guts of the fifties this would have sounded completely different.

The song is ok - but I still think it is a rather disappointing Leiber/Stoller effort. Elvis' vocals sound ok, a bit distant and uninterested - he clearly did not like this song too much.

An atrocious song from Leiber/Stoller – they lost their touch in the early 60s & that was a l-o-n-g time ago.

Not the greatest song in the world and it does seem Elvis seems disinterested. Still, the music is good and Elvis at 50 percent is better than everyone else.

This is such a fun and superb song and it's always been my favorite track from the "Raised On Rock" album.

I don't have such a downer on this song as do many other fans. The voice to me is just different, not necessarily disinterested, and is yet another varaible use of his vocal intonation That said it is not the best song from these seesions, but listen to the extended outtake 14 with additional instrumental and you have something somewhat superior.

I like the song. It has great piano and guitar on it, but I have to admit, Elvis sounds a bit disinterested. Take 14 isn't better than the master. The only other version I know is by the great T-Bone Walker, but I don't know if Elvis based his song on this one. T-Bone Walker sings it very relaxed too.

The best way to listen to this song is via the FTD issue of "Raised On Rock". Disc 2, track 5, features the extended rough mix master of Three Corn Patches. Very enjoyable!

I am a huge fan of Elvis' 70s material. Promised Land, If You Talk in Your Sleep, Sweet Angeline, Talk About the Good Tines and Good Time Charlie's Good the Blues from the Stax sessions are brilliant. In contrast, Three Corn Patches and Raised on Rock (the song) fall into my bottom 10 list. Elvis seems to struggling to get through those two songs.

Definitely Not One of His Better Tracks. What a fall from grace from 1957 Jailhouse Rock by Leiber & Stoller to this crap. Sad.
