Words & Music: Charles O'Curran Dudley Brooks

An angel sent from above, is Mama
And everyone fell in love, with Mama
Mama's so sweet, Mama's so nice
If there is trouble take Mama's advice

There's no-one I hold so dear, as Mama
I always want to be near...

One of the most irritating songs Elvis ever recorded, which urges me to run for the skip button. In my book it's even worse than Old McDonald.

Its very well sung by Elvis, and really not that bad, in my opinion. Just a sweet simple song, with a nice melody.

A very simple song I hardly ever listen to. One nice element of it is that one can hear Elvis' voice so clearly. His beautiful voice is always pleasant to listen to.

Its not irritating at all but I still skip it. When Elvis recorded songs like this he stopped being Elvis to me and I think this is what Lennon's post Army comment is about. Sure, there were great songs in the early 60's, also too many of these and it started to lessen his impact on what was happening in music.

Its a simple nice Movie song and nothing more. Elvis sings it well, but can only do so much with the song.

An artist can't have a good song every time, even Elvis. As much as I love his voice, this song rates right up there (in my humble opinion) with another horrible Mama song - Mama Loved The Roses. Brings to mind something Lawrence Welk (many of you too young to know who that is) would do! At least the Mama song in question is only a movie tune.

It's a nice, sweet, well sung little ode to "Mama." When of those situational movie songs Elvis did a lot of during the movie years.

A nice song for a soundtrack,no more no less. I much prefer "Mama Liked The Roses".

I think it´s awful. One of the worst songs I´ve ever heard him sing. Now, this is painful to hear, much more so than Old McDonald for example.
dgirl wrote on August 30, 2009
Yes it is well sung (Elvis was in his prime) but its an awful, dreadful song. There was a reason it was not inlcuded on the soundtrack LP. Its plain bad.

A big fat stinker. Sorry Mama Stavros.

Well, it could be put on a Cd of Elvis songs for mothers day; along with 'Thats someone you'll never Forget, Love me Tender, Mama liked the Roses, I will be home Again, Gently, Shes not You, Love me Tender, Loving You, The wonder of You', to name a few.

A big fat stinker..not as good as "Old MacDonald" sanity must be questioned !

I actually liked the LBF version at the time! Pity the revamped CD outting didn't use the same tracks as the original LP. Still, the Girls, Girls, Girls FTD included the album version also! The short version is so short it's hardly a song at all!

In the movie "Robin and the Seven Hoods", Dean Martin sings a song called "Any Man Who Loves His Mother." It's not a great song and it is not a great movie, but it is sung to perfection. And when Elvis sang "Mama" in the movie "Girls, Girls, Girls" the same can be said--Elvis' voice is total perfection. We know Elvis admired Dean Martin early in his career, and I think if you look at some of the movies and songs that Dean did, I always felt like maybe Elvis could justify what he was doing a little by comparing. It was a job. It doesn't make the songs any better, but it was the business, and it wasn't only Elvis who did some dumb movies with dumb songs. Elvis just did more of them for longer, which is sad.

Like "Rags To Riches" & "Hurt" too short.
Deano1 wrote on May 29, 2010
This short tune from "Girls! Girls! Girls!" is not dumb, irritating, bad or awful. It is basically a poem set to music and it is quite sweet and very well sung. I can't believe this inoffensive, extremely short (Elvis sings for about 50 seconds) and pleasant praise for Mama is being attacked like it is. If you want bad or dumb songs think "Barefoot Ballad", "Golden Coins", "Smokey Mountain Boy", "The Love Machine", "Yoga Is As Yoga Does", "Hey, Hey, Hey", "Kissin' Cousins (the song sung over the opening credits, not the single) and most of the "Paradise, Hawaiian Style" soundtrack.

A song co written by Dudley Brooks, sometime Elvis pianist. Pretty inoffensive really.

A song that you might like to hear after a night out with her indoors followed by an Italian or a Spanish, though I'd rather have an Indian
bluesboy wrote on May 29, 2010
The longer version has some fine guitarplaying. Cute melody, sweet lyrics and Elvis very much at ease. It's not rock'n'roll but I like it.
Monster wrote on October 29, 2010
Brief, inoffensive tune made noteworthy only for its beautifully delivered vocal. I know it's a cliche among we Elvis fans but when you hear him singing this well you just wish he was doing it with better material.

Average at best...but 10 times better than Old Macdonald.

My daughters Teresa's (4 years old) favourite Elvis song. The long version is very different; sounds like it could be from Fun in Acapulco instead of Girls!Girls!Girls! I like this song a lot.

The song fit the birthday scene on the movie very well. When WGRZ TV, in Buffalo NY, broadcast movies in the late afternoon in the mid 1970s, this was one of the scenes that was cut. Relative to other mama songs, this ranks second to That's Alright (1) and Mamma Liked the Roses (3).

It lasts about a minute but I enjoy it. Nothing like Hava Nagila but somehow conjures up the same atmosphere for me.

Love this song, my Mom passed away 5 months ago and overtime i hear it , it brings tears to my eyes, thinking os my mom

This is a very short ballad, but it's such a sweet and beautiful ballad. Elvis sang it sincerely and tenderly too. 5 Stars.

FM...as well as Mama you should hear Dave Berry singing his version of Mama not the same song but equally pulls at the heart string's.

Another piece of rubbish. This section of Elvis News has really lost it's purpose with these crappy songs you folks keep throwing out for our comments. Ugh.
JerryNodak wrote on April 26, 2019
I don't have problem with the Elvis version. Which wasn't used in the movie. If I was Hal Wallis I would have dumped the Amigos version of the song and used Elvis' short, sweet version. I also would have dumped the song "We'll Be Together" from the Mama Stavros scene. Thereby moving the action along more quickly.

Yeah ....it sucks, really. Boring, bland, stupid, there's absolutely nothing to it. 1 stqr.
Miknik7077 wrote on December 29, 2020
Just a filler. A little unique but nothing special. Would have been better however if they had used this version in the movie.
