One of my favourite Elvis LP's (if not my favourite!) A few fans complain that the Otis-penned "Roustabout" was ditched for the one above, but I think the latter's a great cut, with its carnival melody and its minor chord progressions. "Poison Ivy League" shows Elvis railing against those "sons of the rich" after being introduced as a folk singer who has set many campus ablaze. I guess Elvis could appreciate the gibe intended in the lyrics, being from a dirt-poor background where daddy wasn't president of anything. This soundtrack also borders on the risqué, and humorously so, when Elvis describes "ten hula girls shaking their grass." One thing I admire about this album is the colourful instrumentation, which really captures all of the excitement and fun of the carnival. Check out that organ work on "It's Carnival Time"! And the songs themselves are of a freewheeling nature (the sax-driven "Wheels On My Heels"), and often infectiously positive: "It's A Wonderful World" and "There's A Brand New Day On The Horizon", among others. "Little Egypt" shows that, some six hears after Leiber & Stoller were banished by the Colonel for getting too close to his boy, theirs remained a dynamite pairing. "Hard Knocks" is consistent with the Charlie Rogers of "Poison Ivy League" and gives Elvis the opportunity to cut loose with a terrific slice of rock 'n' roll, of a piece with "I Want You With Me" (1961). Elvis must have delighted in "One Track Heart", and it certainly shows in the film. D. J. Fontana (or was it Buddy? Or Hal?) really nails down that backbeat! And finally, one of my favourites, the haunting "Big Love Big Heartache". If you do not own this soundtrack LP I urge you to invest in one immediately, though not before seeing the film!

I assume that "I'm A Roustabout" is lost along with the outtakes. I guess they did not want to spend time trying to get a mono acetate up to the standard of the other tracks.

This is a fun soundtrack, with nice album cover art, and my only complaint, is that, the songs are way too short ! As soon, as I get into a song, its fading out, and done ! All in all, the happy songs, will put a smile on one's face. Its a shame, that, we couldn't get a bonus track, of the wonderful song,"I'm a Roustabout" on this collection, since it was intended for the soundtrack, but not used. (thankfully the song, appears on the CD,"2nd to None")

I rave for good reason. He's a master at his art. And yes, the audio on the DF version of Roustabout sucked.

Geez.. Vic Anesini must be in your back pocket JerryNodak? All you ever do is rave about this guy. Not all the double feature soundtracks were crap; it all depended upon how rushed the studio was to get the musical gems needed to promote and push the movie scenes along. Some were good, others not.

Agreed... A great soundtrack and if mastered properly is a purchase.

Fun soundtrack. A fave of mine. Sound on DF version sucks. Improved sound? Mastering by Vic Anesini. Nuff said.

Some good stuff on this soundtrack, but then again, I already have it on the double features CD from years ago. If the sound has been improved another 1010% maybe I'll reconsider. For now, not again.
