The ElvisNews Review

Earlier this week I reviewed I’ll Remember You, now it’s time for the other release in the latest FTD-bunch, the classic In Person at the International Hotel.

Design

As with all releases in the classic album series the design is well done. We have original cover art, a nice booklet with great shots of the man (mainly live), but no novelties. The background information is as it should be with every collector’s release.

Content

The first disc is an obvious choice… the original album in top notch quality and the bonus songs were easy choices too… the two songs that originally ended up on On Stage: Runaway and Yesterday and the other rarities from this engagement, released on the fake show on Collector’s Gold back in 1991.

The second CD carries the complete August 22 Dinner Show. Since we have quite some shows of this engagement in this quality now, probably everyone knows what to expect. And you won’t be disappointed if you like that. It’s the same frantic Elvis, with the same stories and jokes and about the same song list.

Since I am one of those that enjoy these shows, I am happy with it, but I can understand that some people think “more of the same”. Sound wise this show isn’t my favourite, I happen to like the mix of the show included in Viva Las Vegas (August 21 D.S.) more, but that is just a minor remark, since there is nothing wrong with the sound of this one.

Conclusion

I loved the original album, enjoy the other shows… so I did enjoy this one too.

4 Stars4 Stars4 Stars4 StarsRock'n'roll! His first live album is also his best. Just listen to his seven-minute run at "Suspicious Minds", frantic, funky and polished by the legendary TCB Band.

5 Stars5 Stars5 Stars5 Stars5 Starsone of my favourite albums coupled with a complete concert (including monologue!), thank you ernst. more concerts from '69 please - especially opening night!

3 Stars3 Stars3 StarsHow can I complain about another unreleased concert from '69? Because I've already got 3 of them. If you've heard one, you've heard them all. They are virtually indentical.

3 Stars3 Stars3 StarsReally too bad they did not put on this CD the missing live renditions of Loving You, Matter of time, oh happy day, I walk the line, More, Trtouble, Folsom prison blues AND YES why not (from the 3CD Collectors) Surrender/Lonesome tonite and LYou/ReconsiderB....WHY is it almost always half-work done, never complete...Missed opportunity, really !

3 Stars3 Stars3 StarsYes, I still do have a record player as you put it. It's the modern version including CD player, AM/FM radio, and an aux. jack to plug in an audio device such as an MP3 player. Crosley makes great products. I'm even able to play 78s from my childhood on it. What a hoot! Rest assured I WILL hit the skip button when the monologue comes up. 10 minutes or so of absolute boredom. I'm only buying this release for disc 1. Could care less about disc 2.

4 Stars4 Stars4 Stars4 StarsWhat's this? How can you possibly complain that FTD are issuing a COMPLETE show from 1969, Elvis was at his very best and the sound should be superb, as have most of the other shows from this season. If you don't like the monologue just press skip! or do you still have record players? for goodness sake we should be grateful that we get to hear it after almost 40 years.!!!!

5 Stars5 Stars5 Stars5 Stars5 StarsDouble CD edition of the album Elvis In Person. Including bonus songs recorded live in Las Vegas in August 1969 plus a complete show from August 22, 1969 (dinner show). The cover is made like the 7" soundtracks from FTD.

3 Stars3 Stars3 StarsIf it's a complete concert on disc 2 there's no way Ernst will edit the boring monologue because the compleatists would have his guts for garters because it isn't complete. Guess they can't live without all that Elvis "humor"?

3 Stars3 Stars3 Starsif it is a complete show, please skip the boring monologues, specially the one before Hound dog. It was not ment for record this 10 minutes monologue. Make it shorter like on the original album, than its ok even after hearing it a 1000 times.

3 Stars3 Stars3 StarsI know what disc one is. Highlights. With highlights you get the best stuff without having to suffer through the throwaways. Yes, he had those in '69 too. If you've heard one complete concert from '69, you've heard them all. I've heard 3. That's enough for me. However, I do expect Ernst will "bless" us with a complete concert on disc 2. A disc that won't get many spins in my CD player.

3 Stars3 Stars3 Starsplease ftd give us elvis fans a xmas gift by releasing the july 31st show. if you do that god you will find many more fans pop up and start buying from the label and that will be great. that show is the mecca of elvis's comeback its the pinacle from the standing ovation to the encore

4 Stars4 Stars4 Stars4 StarsErnst & co are you listening? Release the july 31 st os show! This would be sensational! We know you found these show together with the great somgs released on the collector's boxset back in 1991. This would be the definitive release of the Elvis in person cd!

3 Stars3 Stars3 StarsI guess the best 69 outputs so far are the original album and all shook up with the laughing version of are you lonesome tonight in its original context. the only essential output would be an original openning night soundboard. too bad that there never surfaced any rehearsals. this would have been a great box: original release, opening night and rehearsals.

3 Stars3 Stars3 StarsThe problem with Elvis' complete shows whether from his return to Vegas '69, the early '70s or the mid to late '70s is that if you've heard one show from any one time period you've basically heard them all. Oh, some are better than others to be sure, but the set lists and "jokes" are repetitve to the point of boredom. I expect we probably will get another complete, repetitve, boring concert on disc 2. Personally, I'd rather have concert highlights, but oh well (sigh). Nevertheless, I'll buy this release for disc 1. If we get this release with concert highlights on disc 2 I give it 5 stars. If disc 2 contains a complete concert I give it 3 stars.

5 Stars5 Stars5 Stars5 Stars5 StarsI was waiting for this release in a decent sound for a long, long time. I hope we don't get another complete 1969 show, I preffer bits and pieces of good songs, rarities and stuff... not the same line up time after time after time...
