ElvisNews review

Recently Classic Rock released this DVD compilation. Is it a valuable addition to your collection?

Design

As you can see the front cover is simple but tasteful. The inside of the box shows pictures both from the TV shows in the 50’s as from Aloha. The menu is simple yet effective. A large record next to the same picture as on the front gives you access to the three chapters “The Rock ‘n’ Roll Era”, “Live By Satellite” and the bonus section, as well to there respective track listings. The contrast in the menu when browsing through it is a bit hard to see.

Content

We moved to the front of our seat upon starting the first section. Never before we had seen a part of the first Sullivan show in this quality! Unfortunately the image jumps a bit when Elvis is moving fast, probably due to the compression used. The good quality stays until the Stage Show material starts. From then on the quality is what we are used too, unfortunately. It is about time that someone stands up and starts to remaster the historic material rightfully, and put it in the right chronological order.

The nearly complete Aloha show is from the pre remastered video era. It is very bright, so you need to adjust your TV or wear sunglasses to see it properly.
The sound of the DVD is okay, but not spectacular.

Conclusion
A strange compilation, especially looking at the remark on the cover “This DVD has not been approved in any way by the estate of Elvis Presley”, which estate happens to own the TV shows. The 50’s stuff is pretty much complete, so those that haven’t that on DVD yet, should buy this one. Others can skip it easily, without missing something.

Nice stuff for those that doesn't have the fifties material on DVD yet. Aloha stinks, it's worse than my worn out videotape.
